It appears this is very common

contrib section of the archive.

Just ran across this too.
Gnome 3.10 just released software which looks alot like software-center,
so if its too much to keep maintained that could be a replacement.

hmm, after just running apt-get upgrade, this bug is not present
(however I cannot change alternatives with galternatives, the bubble
wont change even with manual mode)
