I actually upgraded to testing. That didn't work. I have reinstalled stable again and it has worked the second time. I am not sure what I could do differently. other then running installgui the first time and install the second time.
I have installed package 915resolution to fix the 1440x900 resolution which was not in the list... Right now the system is working.
