Dear Alain

I am Alain, one of the current contributor to GDL.
I also put Sylvester in copy, he is now very active ;-)

I am Gurkan, I packaged GDL for my workplace, where astrophysics people use
IDL, to try if GDL can replace IDL...

I just discover you are working for GDL on Debian
http://packages.debian.org/fr/sid/gnudatalanguage
Good new !!

Yes GDL is in Debian for some time now...

I am not using Debian (I use mainly Mandriva and Ubuntu)
BUT I provide for a large group of user and students
compiled versions of GDL on Debian since years.
May be I can exchange with you on that
(on last debian, we have instabilities, apparently
due to Image Magick or Plplot, crashes are not
reproducible ad diasgnostic is not definitive !)

...Ubuntu syncs to Debian, thus gets the same GDL (usually).
Can you tell me more details about the instabilities, best with patches fixing them... for all communication about GDL problems/patches it's best to
use the Debian Bug Tracking System:
http://bugs.debian.org/gnudatalanguage

I have no habits with debian, debian community,
implicit or explicit rules (e.g. is it OK to send direct emails
like this one ? I don't know !)

It's OK but not recommended, since other potentially interested users
won't be able to read these things.

I think I can write "you can contact us directly"
if we can include any improvment you have.
(and also if you know people who would like to contribute ...)

We also also others troubles around GDL:
-- we all are very busy
-- the files in src/pro are usually not in packages (but you put in in
example/)
-- our testsuite is not fully really (you don't put it in )
-- I know that FFTw is not detected on last debian ... but it seems to be
OK for you ?
-- it seems from my tests that GDL is slower (by 20%) on debian
and on others Linux and OSX versions ... How to improve that ?

I'm really not a great user of this software, I was able to test it using
the examples and tutorial, but that's about it. I don't personally have a need
to run IDL or GDL.

But if you're a developer of GDL maybe you can help to fix two problems we have:

#478446: can you update GDL to work with python-numpy instead of the old python-num{eric,array} ?

#504857: can you ship GDL without your own copy of antlr, but require the users to install the officially (updated, and newer) version of it?

With best regards

Alain

Yours,
Guerkan
