An update. I have installed the apt source and rebuilt with debugging
symbols.

I looked at apt_0.7.23.1/methods/cdrom.cc and saw
Debug::Acquire::cdrom, so tried setting

Debug::Acquire::cdrom "true" ;

in a file under /etc/apt/apt.conf.d/

I also tried running /usr/lib/apt/methods/cdrom
under gdb but was unclear whether arguments (I tried full-upgrade)
were needed and how the return was handled.

So far I have not managed to triger the segfault, although I am still
seeing errors from aptitude when it uses cdrom to read dvds.

Also I have not seen any extra errors reported via Debug::Acquire::cdrom -
I am not sure where they should appear. Just to stderr, and/or somewhere in
/var/log/?

I see references to Udev in the source code and note that the recent udev
rules do not always identify cdroms and dvds correctly (bug reported).
But I think the apt dvd segfault predates that change, so perhaps no
connection, although even then a segfault obviously isn't exactly
desirable :-(
