Hi,
i've have looked to the attached syslog [1] on #598062 which seems to be
the same problem.
Grub-installer is not the only package that fails to being installed.
There are some errors before:

that's not changing anything. like i said before, a) grub-common and
grub-pc *are* on the media, and b) it's specific to usb-hdd, the code
you're looking at isn't image type specific. it must be something else.

it appears that grub-installer is unable to find grub-common and grub-pc
when being installed from an live usb-hdd image.
i checked that /cdrom is correctly mounted, and the mediums content is
also correct.
it doesn't fail if the exact same image is not
