I think I have same problem.
I was trying to read

And it essentially miss almost all text when trying to view in xpdf.
It reads fine in Evince or in GV after converting

concerning the patches applied in xpdf, I have a question about the patch named
use-poppler-fix-findfontfile.patch (you created it?).
This patch changes only the files GlobalParams.cc and GlobalParams.h but the
function findFontFile is also called in the
