Just found https://github.com/phhusson/quassel-irssi/commit/ cfbd67f8576e2f5e30ec769866e68326a3466adf from 2016-04-12 which explicitly allows setting the LIBDIR variable for downstream maintainers, so that looks like a way to solve this bug :)
