I also had this bug when upgrading today.
I had this in dmesg:
module: nvidia: Unknown rela relocation: 4
Possibly some issue with the linker or the elf loader in the newer kernel.
Anyway, I just upgraded the kernel to 4.16 and added the correct arg to
/etc/defaults/grub and it's working
