Package: bind9
Version: 1:9.4.2-10
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

Because bind9 does not depend on libbind9, it will happily use an old
version of libbind9 (in my case, libbind9-9.4.1-1+b1 with bind
9.4.2-10).

This causes a segfault after running for some time with a log message
  Jul 13 22:26:00 moya named[27422]: rbtdb.c:1174: REQUIRE(prev 0) failed
Jul 13 22:26:00 moya named[27422]: exiting (due to assertion failure)
and surely causes other serious errors depending on the combination of
versions of these two packages actually installed.

Also note below that liblwres30 still has this old version. I don't
know if this will also cause problems. Since it appears to be compiled
with bind9, an version for its dependency should probably be added too.

The actual error is that bind9 looks for the shlib deps in the wrong
place, and library package should be (for current-lenny) libbind9-31,
not libbind9-30. All of this already got fixed in the 9.5.0 tree.

Also note below that liblwres30 still has this old version. I don't

liblwres30 did not change abi. OTOH, the build was looking for the
library in the wrong place as well. It now looks in the right place.

I'll upload a new 9.4.2 within the next day or so.

This builds fine for me in a current pbuilder on amd64. Could you please
give it back on the amd64 buildd to see whether it builds there, too?

It would be handy if you included the name of the package. And it seems
you uploaded a new version, so there wasn't any need to do anything for
me.

Bug#486070: speedy-cgi-perl_2.22-10 needs build on hppa

2008-07-15 Thread Niko Tyni
Hi hppa buildd admins,

it looks like speedy-cgi-perl is somehow quarantined on hppa; 2.22-10
has been in the 'Needs-Build' state for a month now. The 2.22-9 FTBFS
(#486070) should be fixed in 2.22-10, so could you please requeue it?

Thanks for your work on Debian,

no, this won't work. we cannot conflict against our own packages.

Sure, but how about our libavutil pakage Conflicting against all of
Marillat's packages except libavutil itself? All our packages depend on
libavutil, so this would solve half the problem.

then our libavutil would conflict against our other packages. I don't
think this will work.

We could do the same for our libavcodec package (conflicting against
all of Marillat's packages except libavcodec itself). This should fix
many of the problems, or do I miss anything?

I think this will result in uninstallable packages, unless I didn't
misunderstood your proposal.

Please don't add extra logic in Debian packages to conflict against
packages outside Debian. This is not scalable for a start, anyone can
start asking for more conflicts. The other way around is scalable and
logical: add conflicts in packages outside Debian against packages
inside Debian if necessary.

Cheers

Luk

Pushing a fix to stable-security is easy -- we can patch the needed permission
into refpolicy and ship it out as an update (http://tinyurl.com/5m3oza has a
set of patched packages to do that). The problem is that with the way the
refpolicy packages work today, this will fix only new installations;
preexisting ones will stay broken. That will take a little time, and I don't
want to do it without some testing and review, if at all possible with the
refpolicy maintainers themselves -- mistakes in selinux configuration could
either screw us now or set us up for trouble in the future.

In the interim, we can address questions about the near-term breakage with a
documented workaround. I've drafted one such here:

http://wiki.debian.org/SELinux/Issues/BindPortRandomization

Edits and clarifications, as well as input on a long-term fix, would be
welcome.

haven't looked at the codebase since longer so taking the changelog
entries for granted.

* cmdline - ignores any of the boot passed arguments
even critical ones like root, rootfs or rootdelay

on the TODO of the webpage, unchanged status.

* missing debian arch support - for example s390

you still pretend to work everywhere

* UUID, Label - apparently only works for some fs

no status change, although this is even more grave
as grub switched to use UUID by default.
i guess this gets ignored in the same away as aboves.

the debian kernel team actively encourages users to use UUID,
in order to have stable boot devices. sooner or later d-i
should also switch to use UUID.

* missing firmware - several scsi drivers need firmware inside initramfs
no loader on initramfs nor any mechanism to add it

argh *documenting* your behaviour is not going to rock.
an initramfs is expected to load the driver without
users having to fiddle config files. there are several
scsi drivers that needs it. modinfo tells it.

modern linux drivers have separated firmware and we in debian
always asked for it so this needs to be supported out of the box.

* missing cryptsetup support see #336599
* no dmraid support
* no usplash support

no change

* brutal hardcoding - breaks ony every new linux image
either due to /proc, /sys or /boot/config hardcoded parsing
see #443821 for the latest 2.6.23 variation

after *years* of complaining upstream finally lowered the
severity of the INPUT device warning. *ouf* thanks!!
this should help not breaking installs of linux images.

* dead upstream - 24 debian revisions

one release after 2 years

well from my side no cake, 2 points out of 9 got worked on.
the most grave being no firmware support for loading your root
device.

best regards

Bug#488934: [SRM] stable upload for licq?

Is this ok for a stable point release? Or should this go into volatile
 instead?

I don't think licq is that volatile, at least judging from history. But
currently the version in stable is broken, and thus warrants an upload
to stable-proposed-updates. So please go ahead and upload to
ftp-master.

Bug#490921: CVE-2008-2232: privilege escalation

2008-07-15 Thread Steffen Joeris
Package: afuse
Version: 0.2-2
Severity: grave
Tags: security
Justification: user security hole

Hi

A privilege escalation has been reported against afuse.
This issue is CVE-2008-2232.

Here is some additional information:

afuse accepts a command line of the form
  afuse /path -o mount_template=mount-script %m %r \
  unmount_template=unmount-script %m %r
It replaces %m with the mountpoint and %r with the next component of the
pathname being accessed. These interpolated strings are inserted inside
double quotes, but metacharacters within them are not escaped. The
resulting string is then passed to system() and executed by the shell.

Therefore, an attacker with read access to the afuse filesystem can gain
the privileges of its owner, using paths such as
  /path/;arbitrary command;
  /path/`arbitrary command`

The patch attached is from the original is from the original reporter
Anders Kaseorg, please honour him in the changelog.

When you fix this issue, please mention the CVE id in your changelog.

Cheers
Steffen

 Hi,
the following CVE (Common Vulnerabilities Exposures) id was
 published for clamav.

 CVE-2008-2713[0]:
 | libclamav/petite.c in ClamAV before 0.93.1 allows remote attackers to
 | cause a denial of service via a crafted Petite file that triggers an
 | out-of-bounds read.

If you fix the vulnerability please also make sure to include the
CVE id in your changelog entry.

The DTSA released for this issue seems to have been incomplete. Please
see this mail[1] and the additional upstream commit[2].

This has been uploaded for a while. Thanks for the report. I don't
know where the security upload has gone, the upload file says:

2008-06-16 23:22 clamav_0.90.1dfsg-3etch12_i386.upload

So it's been uploaded for quite a while, but I don't see it on the

the most grave being no firmware support for loading your root

Thanks for your input, Max. Please file at proper bugreports next time!

please spend more time on fixing code.

repeating that on my side the firmware loading is grave enough
to consider yaird not fit for a release.
will not waste more time on this evaluation unless explictly asked.

Ah, I see now - there was one issue with exactly the same wording that
is fixed, but this is a related issue not yet fixed, and so had wording
that applied badly, confusing me. I read the description and the
'before 0.93.1' and said, oh, I know this one - I uploaded fixed
versions already. Sorry for any confusion.

Will look at it tonight.

Followup-For: Bug #486334

Hi all,
I confirm that the solution proposed by Eric (This bug, Message #34)
worked also in my case.
Iceweasel 3.0~rc2-2 was invariably crashing shortly after program launch
on my Debian install.
Getting rid of the libjava plugins in /etc/lib/mozilla/plugins and
/etc/lib/mozilla-firefox/plugins and replacing j2re1.4 by
sun-java6-plugin did the trick.
Best,
Marco

Package: djview
Version: 3.5.20-7
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

djview won't install on my system. I attempted to install 3.5.20-7 so
I could go back to the old viewer. The result was a cascade of
errors. Could be a problem with postinst or maybe the dependencies
are wrong:

arb depends on libglew1.4 which is unavailable. Please rebuild against

I see that your package has the autobuild field set. But it does not seem to
appear
in the buildd database, so I couldn't issue a binNMU for it. Did you contact
[EMAIL PROTECTED] to enable autobuilding?
(Although I have my doubts whether the license actually allows that, since it

Bug#490961: paramiko random number regression: Stop using RandomPool

2008-07-15 Thread Matthias Klose
Package: paramiko
Version: 1.7.3-1
Severity: serious
Tags: security, patch

See http://www.lag.net/pipermail/paramiko/2008-April/000678.html

Revision #486 [1] (and therefore Paramiko 1.7.3) re-introduces the
problems associated with PyCrypto's RandomPool class that I described
in my post back in January. RandomPool is not a simple get random
bits primitive, but paramiko is again using it as one.

Patch at http://www.lag.net/pipermail/paramiko/2008-April/000679.html

This is fixed in the new upstream 1.7.4 as well.

Bug#488899: libgocr: should this package be removed?

On Jul 11, 2008, at 20:16, Raphael Geissert wrote:

Well, the point is that there is not other replacement for this
package. It exists a new upstream with a better, modularized, etc...,
library by the same author, but it's not in Debian yet.

I'm not using it anymore and I'm not considering to package the new one.

What it is better? Leave a dead package in the pool waiting for a the
new package or removing avoiding any problem with possible security
issues or similar leaving Debian without it?

It can be removed, in my opinion.

C.

I made a simple fakechroot environment including only busybox and
/bin/rm, using these versions:

[0 [EMAIL PROTECTED] ~]$ dpkg -l busybox coreutils
Desired=Unknown/Install/Remove/Purge/Hold
| Status=Not/Installed/Config-files/Unpacked/Failed-config/Half-installed
|/ Err?=(none)/Hold/Reinst-required/X=both-problems (Status,Err: uppercase=bad)

ii busybox1:1.1.3-5 Tiny utilities for small and embedded system
ii coreutils 6.10-3 The GNU core utilities
[0 [EMAIL PROTECTED] ~]$

fakechroot appears to no longer actually trick /bin/rm into operating
within the chroot, though i recall it doing so successfully back
when i was using coreutils 5.97-5.3 only two weeks ago.

Here's the test setup. I create a mini chroot environment, create a
new file in the root directory named x, and /bin/rm is unable to
unlink it if the path to /x is specified absolutely:

[0 [EMAIL PROTECTED] cdtemp.o27783]$ rm -rf root
[0 [EMAIL PROTECTED] cdtemp.o27783]$ mkdir -p root/{bin,lib}
[0 [EMAIL PROTECTED] cdtemp.o27783]$ cp /lib/lib{{c,m}.so.6,crypt.so.1} root/lib
[0 [EMAIL PROTECTED] cdtemp.o27783]$ cp /bin/{busybox,rm} root/bin/
[0 [EMAIL PROTECTED] cdtemp.o27783]$ cp /lib/ld-linux.so.2 root/lib
[0 [EMAIL PROTECTED] cdtemp.o27783]$ ln root/bin/busybox root/bin/sh
[0 [EMAIL PROTECTED] cdtemp.o27783]$ fakechroot /usr/sbin/chroot root /bin/sh

/ $ exit
[0 [EMAIL PROTECTED] cdtemp.o27783]$ ls -l /x
ls: cannot access /x: No such file or directory
[2 [EMAIL PROTECTED] cdtemp.o27783]$

Note that busybox's rm appears to be capable of unlinking the chrooted
/x, but that /bin/rm is not able to do so. Even worse, when /bin/rm
uses the *real* (unchrooted) path to the file, it successfully unlinks
it.

I haven't followed all the changes in the recent versions of
coreutils. Is it possible that there's some new library call that is
being used that fakechroot isn't handling or something?

Thanks for maintaining fakechroot in debian. If i can help debug this
any further, please let me know.

Regards,

--dkg

Bug#490340: segfaults when calling QTextBrowser.setText()

2008-07-15 Thread Torsten Marek
Hi,

from the looks of it, this is a bug in the program. Please cf the
documentation of PyQt3 [0].

Support for Threads

  * If you use the Python API then all calls to PyQt (including any
imports) must be done from one thread only. Therefore, if you
want to make calls to PyQt from several threads then you must
use the Qt API.

  * If you want to use both APIs in the same application then all
calls to PyQt must be done from threads created using the Qt
API.

IMHO, this restriction is violated in the code in question, and maybe
also in reportbug-ng. The clean solution would be to communicate via
queues etc, and only call PyQt functions in the main thread.

I'll have a look into this.

best,

Torsten

Bug#490975: devil: glXGetProcAddressARB implicitly converted to pointer

2008-07-15 Thread dann frazier
Package: devil
Version: 1.6.8-rc2-1
Severity: serious
Usertags: implicit-pointer-conversion

Our automated buildd log filter[1] detected a problem that is likely to
cause your package to segfault on architectures where the size of a
pointer is greater than the size of an integer, such as ia64 and amd64.

Function `glXGetProcAddressARB' implicitly converted to pointer at
ilut_opengl.c:116

This is often due to a missing function prototype definition.
For more information, see [2].

Building with -DGLX_GLXEXT_LEGACY seems to avoid this problem, but I
don't know that it is the most appropriate solution.

Though it is guaranteed that this codepath will cause a segfault on certain
architectures, it is not guaranteed that this codepath would ever be executed
(e.g., if the returned pointer is never dereferenced). However, this bug
does prevent the ia64 buildd from successfully building this package, resulting
in a practical FTBFS issue and warranting the serious severity.

Bug#479607: linux-image-2.6.25-1-amd64: Kernel panic: Unable to mount root

2008-07-15 Thread Joergen Bergmann

Package: lilo
Version: 1:22.8-5

CPU: intel Core2Duo 8400
Board: Gigabyte GA P35-DS3R

Hi,

the kernel linux-image-2.6.25-2-amd64 (Version 2.6.25-6, migrated to
testing) fails to boot with Kernel panic, even with lilo 1:22.8-5.

Adding large-memory to lilo.conf solves the problem for me.

If it solves the problem in general, it should be added by default in
lilo.conf.

At least there should be some warnings before installing lilo and
leaving the system unbootable.

Just for information: the next problem I had to deal with, after I was
able to boot, was #479709 Kernel 2.6.25 freezes, because of some
problems with HPET (which is default on new systems)

No luck with the 2.6.25 transition to testing...

best regards

Jörgen

I also see the problem in #488769, but see this, so far, unreported
 issue:

It looks like this happens if you have specified a particular reactor in
the config file--is this the case? If so, can you try commenting out the
reactor element and see what happens?

Hi Ana,

Of course, I was just waiting to get it uploaded as well with the new
patch for other issues of xscreensaver, this weekend is the deadline for
getting it ready and working, so with what's done already xscreensaver
will be sent to a sponsor to get uploaded.

Thanks for asking :)

Will try to be more verbose next time.

Package: afuse
Version: 0.2-2
Severity: grave
Tags: security
Justification: user security hole

Hi

A privilege escalation has been reported against afuse.
This issue is CVE-2008-2232.

Here is some additional information:

afuse accepts a command line of the form
  afuse /path -o mount_template=mount-script %m %r \
  unmount_template=unmount-script %m %r
It replaces %m with the mountpoint and %r with the next component of the
pathname being accessed. These interpolated strings are inserted inside
double quotes, but metacharacters within them are not escaped. The
resulting string is then passed to system() and executed by the shell.

Therefore, an attacker with read access to the afuse filesystem can gain
the privileges of its owner, using paths such as
  /path/;arbitrary command;
  /path/`arbitrary command`

The patch attached is from the original is from the original reporter
Anders Kaseorg, please honour him in the changelog.

When you fix this issue, please mention the CVE id in your changelog.

Cheers
Steffen

Dear Maintainer,

While reviewing some packages, your package came up as a possible
candidate for removal from Debian, because:

* Seriously out of date.
* RC buggy.
* Latest upload is only in unstable. (Has never entered testing).
* Low popcon. ~78 installs.

If you think that it should be orphaned instead of being removed from
Debian, please reply to this bug and tell so.

If you disagree and want to continue to maintain this package, please
just close this bug and do an upload also fixing the other issues.

If you agree that it should be removed, send the following commands to

Excellent. Looks like it's just choosing a reactor that doesn't work.
IMO this is not particularly severe: the non-default reactors are only
necessary if you plan to support many thousands of concurrent
connections, which will never be very reliable because Microsoft will
notice what you are doing and ban you.

Nevertheless, it is possible that simply commenting out line 75 of
main.py will fix the problem--could you please try that and get back to
me?

but doesn't contact msn - the transport says:

Could you try 'telnet messenger.hotmail.com 1863' to see if you can
connect to MSN directly?

and the log file has the familar error:
exceptions.AttributeError: 'module' object has no attribute 'removePID'

This is annoying but harmless. If only twisted would keep its API
stable... :)

Bug#490996: bacula: Recycles current tape in some cases (fixed in 2.4.1)

2008-07-15 Thread Stephen Kitt
Package: bacula
Version: 2.4.1-0.1
Severity: critical
Tags: upstream
Justification: causes serious data loss

Hi,

In some cases version 2.4.0 will re-use the tape that's just filled up
to continue a backup, which means the current backup as well as any
previous backups stored on the tape are lost.

See http://bugs.bacula.org/view.php?id=1103 for the upstream bug entry,
and recent discussion on the bacula-users mailing list.

I had a reproducible error case for this which is not reproducible with
version 2.4.1.

Regards,

Stephen

Bug#490990: xorg: xserver fails to start on PowerPC G4 mac with ATI Rage128 PF/PRO AGP 4x TMDS

Add

I did that. X starts now. But it still thinks my screen is 800x600.
The Gnome screen resolution preferences does not offer me any other
options than 800x600, 60Hz. The screen (A DELL 2100FP) is capable of
1600x1200 and the video card is capable of driving it at that
resolution if I add the following two lines to the Monitor section:

   HorizSync 31-80
   VertRefresh 56-76

Though, the gdm login screen is displayed at 1920x1200, which makes
the pixels seem high and narrow, rather than square. It corrects to
1600x1200 after logging in.

Interestingly, if I do that, I get an error dialog box saying:
Nautilus can't be used now,
due to an unexpected error from Bonobo
when attempting to locate the factory.
Killing bonobo-activation-server and
restarting Nautilus may help fix the problem.

If I click OK, then Nautilus starts and everything is normal... Go
figure!

Let me know if I can test anything for you...

Rick

Can you submit a new bug about this? With full Xorg logs for both cases

Package: logcheck
Version: 1.2.54
Severity: grave
Tags: security
Justification: user security hole

Logcheck can leave a world readable dead.letter that contains parsed
logs.

Steps to reproduce:
* Create a lot of logs that will not be filtered by logcheck. (very
easy). 10MBytes should be enough. You have an hour to do so.
* When logcheck runs it will produce a file of size X MBytes to be
  mailed to root
* Most MTAs have a limit for the maximum message size. If it is exceeded
and you're using sendmail, the mail will be saved in a file named dead.letter
* For logcheck this is placed in: /var/lib/logcheck/dead.letter
* Go read this file and get some logs that you should not see

Example file:
-rw-r--r-- 1 logcheck logcheck 17001006 2008-05-15 15:02
/var/lib/logcheck/dead.letter

Proposed solution:
Change permissions of /var/lib/logcheck dir to 770

Hi,

During a rebuild of all packages in sid, your package failed to build on
i386.

This rebuild was done with gcc 4.3 instead of gcc 4.2, because gcc 4.3
is now the default on most architectures (even if it's not the case on
i386 yet). Consequently, many failures are caused by the switch to gcc
4.3.
If you determine that this failure is caused by gcc 4.3, feel free to
downgrade this bug to 'important' if your package is only built on i386,
and this bug is specific to gcc 4.3 (i.e the package builds fine with
gcc 4.2).

About the archive rebuild: The rebuild was done on about 50 AMD64 nodes
of the Grid'5000 platform, using a clean chroot containing a sid i386
environment. Internet was not accessible from the build systems.

 Hi,

the kernel linux-image-2.6.25-2-amd64 (Version 2.6.25-6, migrated to
testing) fails to boot with Kernel panic, even with lilo 1:22.8-5.

I don't think licq is that volatile, at least judging from history. But
currently the version in stable is broken, and thus warrants an upload
