The libcurl guys were very helpful and some improvements were done on the libcurl side aswell in constant detection to make life easier for bindings. I'll be releasing 4.15 this weekend which should fix this bug and a broader range of constant problems. Thanks a lot! I'm going to forward this information to our bugreports! Bug#594940: Includes binary-only and obfuscated C code
Sorry for the slight delay in responding to this. On Sun, 2010-11-07 at 14:16 +0100, Petr Salinger wrote: Now we have to somehow prune current source tree and disable some modules. Could we get squeeze-ignore tag for some of the affected files or is it necessary to prune all affected files ? Ben's original lists included some files which we don't appear to be able to distribute at all. If his analysis is correct then those files at least would need to be removed rather than ignored. The question is whether pruning following files suffices: Apologies if this question has already been asked (I couldn't find the previous occurrence if it has), but what would the effect on the kfreebsd-* kernel be of removing all of the files which were originally mentioned in Ben's mails in this bug report, and is that an option which has been considered by the porters? fwiw, if the current firmware-loading mechanism could be extended to support using the firmware-* packages, the SRMs would be prepared to look at introducing the updated mechanism - and any necessary new firmware packages - as part of a Squeeze point release, if desired / required. Bug#599437: Looks like we should drop gdisk for squeeze
Hi, gdisk 0.5.1-1 is currently in squeeze and sid and has the RC bug #599437 open against it. There's a new upstream version available (0.6.13), but the change is huge (39 files changed, 9069 insertions(+), 2593 deletions(-)); IMHO the changes are far too large for an update now. The code in the older version of gdisk looks nasty, I'll be honest, and I would rather see it removed. Small popcon usage and no rdeps. So, basically, here we have a package in main testing/unstable with flash files without sources. The package cannot be released with squeeze as it is now, so I'll try to list some options: 1. Remove package from Squeeze (leaving it in unstable) and think about it for the next release 2. Move the package to non-free 3. Find the sources and build flash files from source. 4. May I ask you the problem is still present when you run “LANG=C LC_ALL=C ohai”? I guess the results of “ohai -ldebug” could also be useful to diagnose the issue. Good catch, it is indeed the case. you can reproduce this bug by editing /etc/passwd, adding some accented letter to some user's full name, :set fileencoding=latin1 and save. Bug#594940: Includes binary-only and obfuscated C code
what would the effect on the kfreebsd-* kernel be of removing all of the files which were originally mentioned in Ben's mails in this bug report, and is that an option which has been considered by the porters? From my (non-DD) POV, the most problematic are network drivers sys/dev/txp/3c990img.h - binary is packaged in firmware-linux-nonfree as /lib/firmware/3com/typhoon.bin sys/dev/fxp/rcvbundl.h - binaries are packaged in firmware-linux-nonfree as /lib/firmware/e100/* For our port is very important to release. It would be better to release even without any of these drivers compared to not release at all ... fwiw, if the current firmware-loading mechanism could be extended to support using the firmware-* packages, the SRMs would be prepared to look at introducing the updated mechanism - and any necessary new firmware packages - as part of a Squeeze point release, if desired / required. Could be the plan: 1) drop all files from Ben's mail, repackage .orig.tgz, disable drivers 2) upload into sid and ask for propagation into squeeze 3) start extending firmware-loading mechanism 4a) upload into sid and ask for propagation into squeeze 4b) upload into stable-proposed-updates Whether 4a or 4b depends on our timing. I have to note, that this is my personal planing, not planing of whole porter group, but I expect they would agree. Bug#603405: gucharmap: missing source code needed to update unicode tables
Source: gucharmap Version: 1:2.30.3-1 Justification: Policy 2.2.1 Severity: serious The source package for gucharmap contains 7 automatically generated files: gucharmap/unicode-blocks.h gucharmap/unicode-categories.h gucharmap/unicode-names.h gucharmap/unicode-nameslist.h gucharmap/unicode-scripts.h gucharmap/unicode-unihan.h gucharmap/unicode-versions.h Each of these files contains the following header, making reference to a script called gen-guch-unicode-tables.pl: /* THIS IS A GENERATED FILE. CHANGES WILL BE OVERWRITTEN. */ /* Generated by ./gen-guch-unicode-tables.pl */ /* Generated from UCD version 5.2.0 */ I was trying to add support for the new Indian Rupee Symbol (U+20B9), but the gen-guch-unicode-tables.pl script and the Unicode Character Database, which form part of gucharmap's source code, were missing from the Debian source package. I've marked this bug with a severity of serious, since it violates the DFSG requirement that a program include source code, as well as the GPL requirement that the program be accompanied with its complete corresponding source code (the preferred form of the work for making modifications to it). My suggestion for fixing this bug is as follows: 1. Include gen-guch-unicode-tables.pl in the gucharmap package; 2. Add unicode-data to the build-dependencies of gucharmap; and 3. Run gen-guch-unicode-tables.pl as part of the build process, using the UCD from the unicode-data package. Bug#596351: reproducible, but could be removed from testing?
FWIW, I managed to reproduce this. Simply edit /etc/passwd and add a character above 127 in a non-UTF charset to one of the full-name fields - I used £ in iso-8859-1 (using set fileencoding=iso-8859-1 in vim). The ohai package currently in squeeze and sid has an RC bug (#596351). The first message in the bugreport suggests that the problem might actually be down to an old version of libjson-ruby (latest upstream seems to be 1.4.6). The popcon for ohai is pretty low (~50). Perhaps it could be considered for removal from squeeze? I would imagine that wheezy will contain a version of libjson-ruby that doesn't trigger the bug. kthxbai, -- Chris Butler chr...@debian.org GnuPG Key ID: 4096R/49E3ACD3 -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-rc-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Hi Enrico; We've been talking about this on IRC and it was pointed out that for such a new package, low popcon is not that convincing. There is a tentative plan to rip out the swuploader blobs. Apparently the package is still useful without them (according to upstream). Of course the usual question of someone having time/motivation to do the repackaging is there. So I would say not quite yet for removal, but if nothing starts moving in the next week or so I would not oppose removal. Bug#594150: CURLOPT_TIMEOUT defaults to zero seconds
Hi, Reading through this bug report, I understand that the change in apt-transport-https (not setting CURLOPT_TIMEOUT) broke apt-get. David Kalnischkies reassigned this to libcur3-gnutls stating that the default value for this option is 0 and implying that this is a bug. Does curl really treat the default value as 0 seconds timeout on the connection? Or does it treat 0 as unlimited (i.e. no timeout)? The manpage for curl_easy_setopt is unclear on this. I'm downloading the curl sources to check, but I'd be somewhat surprised if this were the bug since it would affect basically all usage of curl and would have been detected by others immediately. Moreover, the notes on http://apt-test.aviatis.com/ say: Intended behavior: apt-get update and all other apt commands work as long as the specified client-side key/cert is given. Access is denied if they are not given. Actual observed behavior: on lenny, it works as intended. On squeeze, the TCP connection is dropped and there are no successful invocations of apt. Noteworthy: on squeeze, curl seems to be able to access the files successfully with the same key material. Try: curl https://apt-test.aviatis.com/apt-cacher/ftp.us.debian.org/debian/dists/squeeze/Release -k --cert /etc/apt/client-certs/test-client.apt-test.aviatis.com.crt --key /etc/apt/client-certs/test-client.apt-test.aviatis.com.key So I'm left wondering whether the bug really is in apt-transport-https after all? I'm not going to do option 5 myself because I have no idea how to test tdiary, but that seems like the only way we're likely to keep it in Squeeze. The manpage for curl_easy_setopt is unclear on this. Looking at the relevant source code, it seems to be intended to be no timeout. This seems to need quite a few special cases, though, so it wouldn't surprise me if one had been forgotten, particularly in the less-often-used gnutls backend. Noteworthy: on squeeze, curl seems to be able to access the files successfully with the same key material. Try: curl https://apt-test.aviatis.com/apt-cacher/ftp.us.debian.org/debian/dists/squeeze/Release -k --cert /etc/apt/client-certs/test-client.apt-test.aviatis.com.crt --key /etc/apt/client-certs/test-client.apt-test.aviatis.com.key However, curl(1) on Debian uses the OpenSSL variant of the library, whereas apt-transport-https uses the GNUTLS one. By way of background info for upstream: the binary package builds curl twice, once for each variant, in debian/build and debian/build-gnutls (respectively), and packages them separately; dependent packages choose one or the other according to their licensing requirements (GPL things, like apt, need the GNUTLS variant). The build tree in debian/build-gnutls is compiled --without-ssl --with-gnutls - --without-libssh2, with some build-system patches to make it produce libcurl-gnutls.so. There don't seem to be code changes, though, so hopefully you might be able to reproduce this with an unpatched build with similar ./configure arguments. While in the build tree of Debian's curl packages, you can test either version with the corresponding curl command-line tool, even though the GNUTLS variant isn't actually going to be installed. Hopefully I'm driving it correctly here: # OpenSSL backend, zero timeout, succeeds ./debian/build/src/curl -k https://apt-test.aviatis.com/apt-cacher/ftp.us.debian.org/debian/dists/squeeze/Release --cert ../test-client.apt-test.aviatis.com.crt --key ../test-client.apt-test.aviatis.com.key # OpenSSL backend, 10 second timeout, succeeds ./debian/build/src/curl -m10 -k https://apt-test.aviatis.com/apt-cacher/ftp.us.debian.org/debian/dists/squeeze/Release --cert ../test-client.apt-test.aviatis.com.crt --key ../test-client.apt-test.aviatis.com.key # GNUTLS backend, zero timeout, fails ./debian/build-gnutls/src/curl -k https://apt-test.aviatis.com/apt-cacher/ftp.us.debian.org/debian/dists/squeeze/Release --cert ../test-client.apt-test.aviatis.com.crt --key ../test-client.apt-test.aviatis.com.key curl: (28) SSL connection timeout # GNUTLS backend, 10 second timeout, fails differently! ./debian/build-gnutls/src/curl -m10 -k https://apt-test.aviatis.com/apt-cacher/ftp.us.debian.org/debian/dists/squeeze/Release --cert ../test-client.apt-test.aviatis.com.crt --key ../test-client.apt-test.aviatis.com.key curl: (28) gnutls_handshake() failed: Decryption has failed. Bug#603405: gucharmap: missing source code needed to update unicode tables
Le samedi 13 novembre 2010 à 14:06 -0500, Dwayne C. Litzenberger a écrit : I was trying to add support for the new Indian Rupee Symbol (U+20B9), but the gen-guch-unicode-tables.pl script and the Unicode Character Database, which form part of gucharmap's source code, were missing from the Debian source package. The perl script looks like it was omitted from the tarballs. For the Unicode tables, this is of course intentional, since that would make 8 MB more data just for them. Patches are welcome; as for myself, I have more interesting things to do. I already tried to do this kind of things to “auto-generated” files in GTK+, and it turned out to be a disaster to implement, because you need a specific version of the source files if you want to be sure there is no side effect.
