Bug#340942: Can't actually use libcurl?

Most likely the curl-config output is messed up in some way. We use
curl-config to determine which flags to use to link with curl, but then we
check whether these flags actually work, and it is this check that fails.
So either curl-config is messed up (as it used to be on MacOS--it claimed
to be x86) or our test is misfunctioning in some way. It could be that our
workaround for the bug in curl-config on MacOS is somehow backfiring on
  another platform... :(

Yes, curl-config is messed up in the sense that curl-config is *always*
messed up for purposes of dynamic linking on GNU systems. In the present
case, curl-config spits out -lkrb5 and other library options, but is missing
a dependency on libkrb5-dev. This is bug #340784, and should be fixed
reasonably soon.

On the darcs side, this is fixable by changing the Debian package to not use
curl-config -- as described at
http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel-announce/2005/11/msg00016.html. It's
understandable that upstream would not want to accept such a patch, since
it's not portable to platforms which use non-GNU linkers; but for Debian's
purposes, until curl-config adds a --static option to split these other
garbage linker options out, it's far better to replace `curl-config --libs`
with -lcurl as this is much less likely to lead to future build failures as
a result of curl bugs.

Cheers,

 Dear maintainer,

as this bug is RC for 11 days now and a simple patch for fixing it is
available I intent to NMU this package on Wednesday, the 30th,
 uploading to DELAYED/7-day.
If I don't hear any feedback from you wrt bug#328958 (RFA for
libmusicbrainz) I'll use the attached patch, otherwise I'll probably
 go for Matthias' patch.

Is there any reason to not simply drop libmusicbrainz-2.0, in favor of the
libmusicbrainz-2.1 package that *everything* else in the archive is using?
There currently seem to not be any python bindings for -2.1, but surely we
should just get updated bindings instead of keeping -2.0 around. (And in
the process, hopefully dropping python2.1/python2.2 in favor of
python2.4...)

Bug#339211: Intent to NMU on 11/30

2005-11-29 Thread Florian Ernst
On Tue, Nov 29, 2005 at 12:28:50AM -0800, Steve Langasek wrote:

Except for the (broken) dcd package, which still Build-Depends on
libmusicbrainz2-dev. However, I already tried building this package
with libmusicbrainz4-dev and all seemed to run fine, so this probably
isn't an issue at all.

There currently seem to not be any python bindings for -2.1, but surely we
should just get updated bindings instead of keeping -2.0 around. (And in
the process, hopefully dropping python2.1/python2.2 in favor of
 python2.4...)

In fact, this lack of python bindings was the reason for me to favor
keeping libmusicbrainz-2.0 for now.
On the other hand, upstream reintroduced those binding in their latest
release (not yet packaged), so it looks like libmusicbrainz-2.0 won't
be needed anymore at all in short time, and when packaging this new
release surely older python version support should be dropped in favor
of python2.4. Thus, dropping libmusicbrainz-2.0 would only hurt some
users and only for short while.

Still, right now I intended to stick to a minimal set of changes for
an NMU, especially as long as I haven't recieved any feedback from the
maintainer regarding the pending adoption...

Cheers,
Flo

user debian-release@lists.debian.org
usertag 339164 -transition-libstdcxx-allocator
thanks

This is a false positive on the check for affected C++ libraries; although
the felix package does ship a .so file in /usr/lib, it contains no soname
and the package provides no shlibs, so there's no way that there could be
reverse-dependencies that would be helped by a change of this package's
name.

However, given that the package does include header files, and that the .so
file *is* shipped in /usr/lib, it seems likely that the intention is for
felix to be usable as a shared library; so I'm leaving this bug at severity:
serious, since it seems there are some general library packaging issues that
need a closer look before including felix in a release.

Cheers,

Package: gnuradio
Version: 0.9-2.1
Severity: grave
Tags: sid

Hello,

This is a grave bug filed against your package because it depends on
libqt3c102-mt, which no longer exists, thus rendering yor package
uninstallable in unstable. As part of the C++ ABI transition, this
library has moved to the libqt3-mt package.

Simply recompiling and uploading your package should be enough to fix
this; as per this mail [1], you need not bump your Qt, kdelibs or aRts
build-dependencies. Beware, though, that that may not be the case for
all the involved librares. Also, make sure that you build the package
in an up to date and clean sid environment, so that final dependencies
are correct. Please do this as soon as possible in order to accelerate
  the Qt/KDE transition to testing.

[1] http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel-announce/2005/09/msg0.html

Perhaps you find that your package fails to compile with gcc4. If
that's the case, there's probably a bug about it in the BTS, and it
may include a patch. If not (or if you have doubts about the
correctness of the patch), you may be able to find a fix in upstream's
CVS, or in the Ubuntu distribution. If your package fails only in arm,
m68k, and hppa, see instructions in the above mail.

Finally, if there's a strong reason for which your package should not
be NMUed, please note so in this bug report. Prospective NMUers will
read your reasoning, and will decide if it's strong enough to delay
  their upload.

Thanks for your cooperation, and happy hacking!

P.S.: There may be an already reported bug against this package for
this very same reason. I've checked for that, and will be merging the
bugs soon. The reason for still filing this bug was to have the
opportunity of including the small bits of information above. I
  apologize for the inconvenience.

Bug#341234: New dash 0.5.3-1 breaks apt-move

2005-11-29 Thread Petr Vandrovec
Package: apt-move
Version: 4.2.24-1
Severity: grave

Hello,
  apt-move uses

if ! type exp /dev/null 21; then
if type dash /dev/null 21; then
exec dash $0 $@
else
exec ash $0 $@
fi

to make sure that it is executing under dash or ash. dash 0.5.3-1 breaks
this code, causing it to enter endless loop as dash lost its 'exp' builtin:

$ dpkg -l dash

It is probably caused by this upstream change:

2005-02-28 Herbert Xu [EMAIL PROTECTED]

* Replaced EXEVAL with SKIPEVAL.
* Update funcnest atomically.
* Only set skipcount for break and continue.
* Removed expcmd built-in.
* Normalise input in likely/unlikely macros.

I've verified that upstream apt-move 4.2.25 still uses this detection.
If you believe that this detection is correct and dash is package with problem,
then feel free to reassign this to dash. As Herbert is upstream maintainer
for both dash and apt-move, it probably does not matter a lot, as it
ends up in his mailbox this way or another.

For Debian I would apply patch below, which removes dash/ash detection and
forces dash through #!.
Thanks,
Petr Vandrovec

Bug#341238: flashplugin-nonfree: Installer cannot install manually downloaded file

2005-11-29 Thread Nick Leverton
Package: flashplugin-nonfree
Version: 7.0.25-5
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

Since the upstream download location no longer exists, this package
requires the user to download the Flash installer by hand and feed it into
update-flashplugin. This is suggested in bug no. 339290

However update-flashplugin doesn't seem to understand the current .tar.gz,
it claims it doesn't contain files which are in fact in the tarball:

tags 339166 patch
thanks

Hi Silke,

I've prepared an NMU to also fix this bug in gdal. The patch for this NMU
is attached, and I'll be uploading the package shortly to the NEW queue. If
you disagree with any of the changes made, please make a maintainer upload
in its place.

Cheers,

LFLD == Luis Fernando Llana Díaz [2005-11-29]

LFLD Package: auctex
LFLD Version: 11.55-1
LFLD Severity: critical
LFLD Justification: causes serious data loss

Hi!

Please, do not abuse severity levels. You can find a description of
their meaning and intended use at:
http://www.debian.org/Bugs/Developer#severities.

LFLD I have been using emacs/auctex satisfactory for quite a long time.
LFLD Now I have activated the fly spell checker. It seems that when there
LFLD is an italized word whose spelling is not correct then emacs blocks.

On my systems, it seems not: I cannot reproduce this bug. Fly spelling
works fine here with AUCTeX.

Can you please provide a minimal example (a file or a buffer content) to
trigger this bug, so that I can try to reproduce it?

Bug#341248: [sarge] bogus Filesystem would be destroyed message

The only problem I can see is that this system has been migrated from Windows

the format.exe utility from german Windows 9x.

However, no such problems appeared while Woody has been installed on that box
few years ago.

I will attach lilo.conf and the bootblock from hdc1 to this report.

Eduard.

Bug#340076: Acknowledgement (Fails to generate format xmltex)

2005-11-29 Thread Braun Gabor
Sorry, I have sent an incorrect, unchecked patch, please ignore it.

My idea for fix is the same: do not rely on what tex engines are used by latex
and pdflatex.

Here is a correct patch:

--- /root/40xmltex.cnf 2005-04-21 16:42:54.0 +0200
+++ /etc/texmf/fmt.d/40xmltex.cnf   2005-11-28 21:27:43.0 +0100

-pdfxmltex pdftex language.datpdflatex pdfxmltex.ini
+xmltex latex language.datlatex xmltex.ini
+pdfxmltex pdflatexlanguage.datpdflatex pdfxmltex.ini

That is: change the tex engine used to that of the format you build upon.

This supposes that latex is a symlink to the tex engine of the latex format
but you assume this anyway by making xmltex to be a symlink to latex.
Similar remark apply to pdfxmltex and pdflatex.

I think this bug is already reported in bug #338327. Please consider merging
the bugs.

Best wishes,

Gabor Braun

The bug you reported your problem to (as a Follow-up for:) has
disappeared from the list of Outstanding Grave functionality bugs, and
is now listed as the second one under Resolved bugs - Grave
functionality bugs. Whether this was a result of Hilmar's control
mail, as he intended, or because the BTS admins fixed it, this I don't
 know.

What you wrote earlier made it sound like the bug does not apply to
version 3.0-10.1 yet this is the version reported during the build log.

 Or did I misunderstand this?

The bug you reported is *completely* unrelated to #334613. And

The right bug is #340279, it is still open. All followup messages

Bug#341257: linux-2.6: new binutils breaks ia64 builds

2005-11-29 Thread dann frazier
Package: linux-2.6
Version: 2.6.14-4
Severity: critical

2.6.14-4 doesn't boot on my ia64 box, while 2.6.14-3 did.

This isn't due to any of the patches in 2.6.14-4, rather it is
correlated with the use of the new assembler.

binutils_2.16.1cvs20051117-1 shows the problem, where binutils_2.16.1-3
did not.

This patch appears to fix the problem:

This is a false positive on the check for affected C++ libraries; although
the felix package does ship a .so file in /usr/lib, it contains no soname
and the package provides no shlibs, so there's no way that there could be
reverse-dependencies that would be helped by a change of this package's
 name.
Its also not really a problem because of the semantics of the felix
compiler. To run a flx program, one does 'flx foo.flx', which generates
a .so file (linked to /usr/lib/libflx_dynamic.so) and then dlopens it
during the run... it does not actually create an executable. Therefore,
if libflx_dynamic.so changes, foo.so will automatically be rebuilt.

Right, upstream and I have discussed this. The correct place for that
file is in /usr/lib/felix, but to change this would require a rather
large patch against the compiler, so I went ahead and placed it in
/usr/lib for the time being, and upstream is working on moving it to
/usr/lib/felix as development continues. Since the language is still in
heavy development, its kind of a chicken and egg problem to know exactly
what kind of file-layout/semantics to use with the compiler without
having many users, so we agreed to upload this as is for now.

Cheers,
- -Mike

PROBLEM:
random login problems without any error messages: some users can't log,
whichever window manager is chosen. The behaviour is essentially the
same as in the case of bug #327191 (but for different reasons)

DIAGNOSIS:
the problem was caused by the line
  alias ls=ls --color
in the $HOME/.profile file of some of the users

DESCRIPTION:
The script /etc/X11/Xsession uses ls instead of /bin/ls in the
run_parts subroutine on the following line:

  for F in $(ls $1); do

KDM calls /etc/X11/Xsession _after_ reading /etc/profile, $HOME/.profile
or whatever other relevant login scripts are available.

We found out that the following combination is lethal (i.e. you cannot
log in through the graphical manager):

1) ksh as the login shell (couple of thousands users in our environment)
2) .profile redefines ls using an alias:
alias ls=ls --color
(common for many users, after all this is what .profile is for!)

Presently, we do not know whether why this behaviour is seen only in ksh
and not in bash. Note that, unlike the related bug #327191, this behaviour
is not due to an error in the users .profile file, as the line quoted above
is correct and works on other (non-Debian) systems.

SOLUTION:
substitute ls with /bin/ls in the aforementioned line

FURTHER COMMENTS:
Although this is really a quickfix, because we do not fully understand what
happens here, we think that using ls without a path specification which
obviously may or not may be manipulated is a generally bad idea and should
not be used.

Tracking of this bug cost us a lot of time: we experienced random behaviour
(some users can log in, some can't, no traces of error in the log files,
everything seems to be OK except that the X session dies). Its gravity was
serious in our environment, as all university users have ksh as the default
shell, and many users are used to the ls --color alias (which is default
e.g. in SuSE).

Furthermore, using ls instead of /bin/ls is a potential security hole even
though Xsession runs as user.

We provide a fix.

Please, do something about it.

Although libfreetype6 is currently available in unstable, due to bug #314385
it is very likely that this package will have to go through a library

filing this bug at grave severity pre-emptively, to encourage you to get
your package free of the transition before it starts. The patch is very
straightforward, so I hope you'll be able to apply it quickly.

It's funny, because I will make an update on amule package soon, and

Bug#340488: Problem in libsoup2.2-8

2005-11-29 Thread Scott Anderson
libsoup2.2-8 is based on libsoup-2.2.6 which has a known bug in the
soup-soap-message.c code. The
fix is in 2.2.6.1. (Current version is now 2.2.7) It addresses the
g_type_get_private warning,
which was causing the segfault.

There is already a debian bug on libsoup2.2. (Bug#330493)

Bug#329090: Debian sarge tools do not set the barrier correctly

2005-11-29 Thread Micah Anderson
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

unmerge 329090
reassign 329090 util-vserver 0.30.204-5sarge2
thanks

Hi,

I have updated the kernel-patch for 2.4 to properly honor the barrier in
2.4 kernels. The fix appears in version 2.3 of kernel-patch-vserver.
This will solve #329087, and has been submitted to the security team for
an update to sarge.

However after fixing this, I ran some tests which brough out the issue
that the util-vserver tools in sarge do not set the barrier correctly,
which enables the chroot escape to work regardless of the kernel-patch
being fixed.

If I compile a new 2.4 kernel with this updated patch and then use the
util-vserver package from sarge (0.30.204-5sarge2), I can break out of
the barrier... I can break out of the barrier using the newer tools as
well. However, if I set the barrier with the newer tools, I can no
longer break out. This means that the tools in Sarge do not properly set
the barrier and need to be updated.

My tests:

I compiled upstream 0.30.209, I use upstream showattr to demonstrate
that the barrier is *not* set properly:

# ./showattr /var/lib/vservers/
- ---bu-- /var/lib/vservers
- ---bu-- /var/lib/vservers/bluebird

I then use upstream setattr to set the barrier:
# ./setattr --barrier /var/lib/vservers/bluebird/..

I then use upstream showattr to view the barrier:
# ./showattr /var/lib/vservers/
- ---BU-- /var/lib/vservers
- ---bu-- /var/lib/vservers/bluebird

This is the correct barrier, and ssh'ing into the vserver the rootesc
does not work.

If I use the debian tools to look at the barrier:
# /usr/sbin/showattr /var/lib/vservers/
- ---BU-- /var/lib/vservers/
- ---bu-- /var/lib/vservers/bluebird

so the debian tools at least can see the correct barrier :)

If I unset the barrier and then set it again with the debian Sarge
tools, the chroot escape works again:

# ./setattr --~barrier /var/lib/vservers/..
# /usr/sbin/setattr --barrier /var/lib/vservers/..
(ssh into the vserver, run the rootescape, it works).

If I unset the barrier and set it again with the upstream tools, the
chroot escape does not work anymore. I get the same results if I install
the version of util-vserver that is currently in testing/unstable
(0.30.208-4). So it is clear that the Debian Sarge tools are just not
setting the barrier properly.

Justification: root security hole

Dear maintainer(s),

I found the kernel-patch-vserver and util-vserver in sarge can not pass
the testfs.sh script[1] which provide by upstream author. After some more
tests, upstream author discoveryed this is a security hole.

Here is what I did in my test:
# ls -lda /var/lib/vservers//..
d- 8 root root 4096 Sep 19 19:46 /var/lib/vservers//../
# showattr -d /var/lib/vservers//..
---BU-- /var/lib/vservers//..
# lsattr -d /var/lib/vservers//..
---t- /var/lib/vservers//..

ssh into a guest and then starting the root exploit[2] inside a guest now
gives: Exploit seems to work. =)

And then I can be able to access the host, can be able to read /etc/shadow
and can be able to create /test.txt in the host.

Bug#341286: mismatch between the kernel used by installer and included in the archive

2005-11-29 Thread Jeffrey Hundstad

Package: installation
Severity: grave
Tags: d-i, sid

Here's the total log of installation:

1. put cd-rom '20051128 sid - fsn.hu unofficial i386 Binary-1' in drive

2. boot

3. Press enter to take default install options

4. Choose English

5. Choose United States

6. Choose American English

(okay at this point all I've done is hit the Enter key taking defaults.
The next screen is:

=
[!!] Load installer components from CD

No kernel modules were found. This probably is due to a mismatch
between the kernel used by this version of the installer and the kernel
version available in the archive.

If you're installing from a mirror, you can work around this problem by
choosing to install a different version of Debian. The install will
probably fail to work if you continue without kernel modules.

continue the install without loading kernel modules?

Go Back Yes No
=

At this point I'm stumped. I'll give a more meaningfully report if
someone can tell me what would be helpful.

This isn't a new problem as far as I can tell. Several versions in the
last few weeks also give the same error. Since I can't find older
versions I can't tell you if this ever worked.

Hi
The package needs to be rebuild against the new kdelibs4-dev so that the

(This is because of the libstdc++ allocation transition).

Hi,

I'm not sure what is causing this to happen on your machine, however it
works fine for me on 3 different systems. Maybe some files in your
~/.imms directory are corrupted. Try to rename or remove that directory
and see if makes any difference, or even run it as a different user.

In the mean time I'm lowering the severity of the bug report to normal.

The dependency on php-http-request seems to be the problem. Get

I've done that, and am back to my original problem: I can create new

Since the problem shows on such different versions of the horde, I guess
the root cause must be somewhere in my debian setup. But would I be
better off asking for help on one of the horde mailing lists regardless?

Bug#341305: evolution-exchange-storage crashes constantly

2005-11-29 Thread Jason Martens

Subject: evolution-exchange-storage crashes constantly
Package: evolution-exchange
Version: 2.2.3-4
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

When using evolution with an exchange backend, I constantly receive the
message 'The Application evolution-exchange-storage has quit
unexpectedly.'. It happens about every couple minutes. I can sometimes
read several messages between crashes, but unless you are a severe
masochist, the package is really unusable which is why I have marked
this report as grave. I'm willing to do whatever is necessary to get
this working, because I rely on evolution-exchange for my day to day
work, and want to make sure it works right. :)

Bug#341172: [Evolution] Bug#341172: evolution experimental fails to build from source

On Tue, Nov 29, 2005, Scott Anderson wrote:

 Yes, it's the problem.

I think evolution 2.4.1 was never meant to be built against pilot-link
0.12. Only evolution 2.5/2.6 will support it.

The pilot-link-0.12 patches are now in garnome-2.12.0

I had a look, this is an evolution 2.5 patch, and it didn't apply
against 2.4. I tried backporting the patch to 2.4, but I'm relunctant
to build evolution against pilot-link from experimental, I think this
is inappropriate. I attach the patch, let me know if it solves the
 problem for you.

   Cheers,

Severity: important

Please do not take any action before reading
http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel-announce/2005/11/msg00010.html

This bug report is filed against the source package which builds
a library depending on libstdc++6 and defining or referencing
*mt_alloc* symbols. The package has to be rebuilt with either
g++-4.0_4.0.2-4 or g++-3.4_3.4.4-10 (or newer). Please rename the
library package to a name with a c2a suffix, and adjust the build
dependencies if dependencies on another renamed library do exist.

Do *not* yet upload the package, but wait for a followup mail to this
bug report.

If this bug report is for some reason invalid, please close it with
a short reasoning.

Bug#339290: problem with fpdownload.macromedia.com

2005-11-29 Thread Stefan Potyra
Hi,

thanks for maintaining this package.

the problem with fpdownload.macromedia.com is, that it doesn't provide
gpg-md5sum.txt, so checking for updates is not trivial.

I just uploaded a modified version of your package to ubuntu (multiverse),
which uses fpdownload.macromedia.com and sets @force to true, however I don't
think this is a solution to the problem.

Cheers,
Stefan.
