Hi All, Am happy to see this bug is resolved but as I just spent the better part of the day figuring out that libqt5x11extras5 was indeed the culprit behind neither my laptop nor my desktop being able to launch KDE anymore, I wondered if it was possible to ensure others do not get bitten by the same bug, by replacing the version currently in testing. Hi,
I've tried to build python-glanceclient with python-requests 2.7.0 and
version 1.12 of python-urllib3, and it just broke (ie: FTBFS). Building
python-glanceclient with version 1.11-2 of urllib3 worked, and also,
upgrading python-requests to 2.8.1 worked as well.
As you must know (because upstream got in touch with you), urllib3 and
requests are very tighly coupled, and you cannot upgrade one without
upgrading the other.
The way forward with this, IMO, is to upgrade requests to 2.8.1.

Rebuilding elpa-expand-region with the current dh-elpa (0.0.15) and installing the resulting package before upgrading emacs24 fixed this particular issue because updated dh-elpa templates were used. I think the two attached patches from upstream r1636289 and r1676417 are
the only likely candidates and should most probably be included together.
They apply as-is to the jessie package.

Subject: [PATCH] Decrement interp->refcnt when freeing interpreter in
modperl_interp_unselect()
The case where interp->refcnt==1 was not being handled correctly. Prior to r1562772 the refcnt was decremented to 0 but then the function returned early, wrongly not freeing the interpreter, leading to deadlock in the event MPM. Following that change the interpreter was now freed, but the refcnt was wrongly no longer decremented.
This change decrements the refcnt (always) and frees the interpreter as well (unless the refcnt is still > 0). An extra safety check is also made, to return early if the interpreter has already been unselected, although with correct refcnting now, we do not expect this to happen.
This patch is based on investigations and a tentative patch suggested by Richard M Kandarian:

Subject: [PATCH] Initialize interp->refcnt to 1 in modperl_interp_select.
Reasoning:
1. All calls of MP_INTERPa do not increment interp->refcnt, so refcnt
used to be 0 before this commit. But there is always matching
MP_INTERP_PUTBACK, which calls modperl_interp_unselect which decreases
the refcnt, so it was possible to get negative refcnt or crash with
threaded MPMs, because reference counting has been broken.
2. modperl_interp_select increases the refcount if it finds the PerlInterp in
ccfg, so it makes sense to increase it (it means set to 1) during
initialization too. Otherwise the refcnt would be incremented for the caller
in some cases, but wouldn't be in other.
This commit fixes the crash seen on worker MPM when PerlInterp has been used
by two threads and the first one freed PerlInterp during
modperl_interp_unselect.

I was able to reproduce it on my Sid system and fixed it by installing these two packages: python3-psycopg2 python3-sqlalchemy The first one was understandable, because it is the corresponding python3 package to the one already listed among the build dependencies. It is not clear to my why sqlalchemy was needed, and furthermore why only the python3 version was required. (I doublechecked and I did not have python-sqlalchemy installed already) Nevertheless, the attached patch should resolve this issue. As far as I understand it's because you are moving to run the X server as user, fine. Still, I fail to see how do you consider the bug closed with a recommended package that forces to install something else. Even if the systemd package description says that "Installing the systemd package will not switch your init system unless you boot with init=/bin/systemd or install systemd-sysv in addition." And that saifd, I don't have any influence on that find given it's dpkg-maintscript-helper (from dpkg!) doing it's job to convert a dir to a symlink. Which is needed in this upgrade and even if I reverted the doc linking needing this I still need to do this for intermediate versions in sid.. If you looked whether the process(es) do something you would have seen that the find does it's job... Even installing -dev-doc takes a long time due to its sheer count of files. I agree. there have been multiple reports (in debian & ubuntu) that
incremental assembly does not work reliably during early boot,
especially in the initramfs, without e.g. main-loop / systemd
generators / timers support.

Bug#802811: libqt5x11extras5: causes konsole to segfault in libX11 on startup
The issue here is that KApplicationPrivate::init() (from kdelibs4support) has this call: XInternAtoms(QX11Info::display(), names, n, false, atoms_return); However QX11Info::display() behavior changed in Qt 5.5 [1], and it returns a null pointer when ran with old qtbase (5.4), therefore XInternAtoms crashes. So the only thing we can do here is tightening the qtx11extras dependencies to make sure it will pull in libqt5gui5 5.5 (which I will do now).
