More or less, doing some trial and error I discovered that using desktopConfig instead of defaultConfig fixes magically the problem. https://github.com/alexpdp7/xmonad.pdp7/commit/037a44a8f7541fb3983ade528e34b4cfa0ea81a5 . I suppose there's some bug somewhere, but I'm happy for now- don't know
