returned is decided by the kernel. Ideally ifconfig should list all
addresses but it stops on the first one.

- kernel returning link-local addresses first

As an FYI - I ran into the exact same problem you did.
I deleted extensions.rdf and the extensions.cache and extensions
directory within ~/.mozilla-thunderbird/ and I was able to
successfully install lightening. (extensions.rdf is re-created).
