Bug#761174: plplot: FTBFS on kfreebsd-i386 reproducibly

I noticed the following in the build log: -- WARNING: no working Ada compiler so disabling Ada bindings and examples. I notice popcon shows no installs at all of any sort for the plplot ada-related binary packages, so disabling them for all architectures (at least for jessie) may be a reasonable solution if this isn't easy to fix: https://qa.debian.org/popcon.php?package=plplot Not all users run popcon, but this does strongly suggest they aren't widely used currently. This is probably a side-effect of #759407 which should be fixed. When that's fixed, plplot will probably build just fine on k-i. I agree with this analysis. I'd rather not disable ada unless necessary so I'll propose a wait and see approach. Andrew -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-rc-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Bug#725957: GDL builds again on powerpc and kfreebsd, needs updated plplot though

(source-contains-prebuilt-javascript-object has basically the same cause, but different reasons.) The first of these files is part of the plplot web pages which are not built or used by the Debian packages so could be safely removed. The remainder are part of the doxygen generated documentation. I would see this as a doxygen bug (but from the comments in /usr/share/doc/doxygen/README.jquery it seems like this is going to stay. Since I don't currently package or rebuild this documentation either it could also be removed. I always thought it best to not meddle with the upstream tarball. Would a debian patch to remove the offending .js files be sufficient? x Alternatively, since the files are not used as part of the Debian packages would a lintian override be acceptable? I must admit I didn't find the lintian help for this error particularly helpful in this respect. Good idea, thanks for reminding me of that option. That was the right hint, thanks! :-) The package builds fine with cmake (current state available at [1]) on at least powerpc and kfreebsd-i386. Haven't tested it on kfreebsd-amd64 yet, but it's unlikely that it fails there if it succeeds on kfreebsd-i386 and amd64. The only issue left is that plplot is out of date in Debian Unstable and gnudatalanguage's build dependencies currently can't be satisfied in Debian Unstable: libcsiro0, a dependency of libplplot11 and built by the plplot source package, currently depends on libqhull5 which is no more available (it has been replaced by libqhull6) in Debian Unstable. I can't really upload gnudatalanguage before plplot is fixed. To test the builds despite the missing build dependency, I took the formerly available libqhull5 packages from Debian's snapshot archive at [2]. Andrew: Any news on the plplot front? This has taken a while as I've been busy with work and also a number of other issues have needed fixing as part of the transition. I think I am there now. I'll need a sponsor to upload the packages. Bug#707268: Bug#725957: gnudatalanguage and plplot not migrating

As documented in the BTS I've forwarded the FTBFS to Sylwester Arabas (the one of the GDL upstream devs I had most contact with) by e-mail after I noticed them, but got no reply so far. He though opened an issue at their tracker just an hour ago: http://sourceforge.net/p/gnudatalanguage/bugs/594/ That's because I had been talking with a colleague who is also involved upstream. I decided to offer my help here while he pinged Sylwester. I think it would make sense to maintain them in a team, either debian-science (CC:) or debian-astro. I'm happy if someone else would help keeping GDL in Debian in shape or even wants to take over maintainership completely. We both, Gürkan and me, only maintain GDL in Debian because we need it at work. We don't use it ourselves. I don't mean to hijack your package. However, it would make sense for me to get involved since I can meet upstream face to face anytime. With regards to plplot: I reviewed it for sponsoring and there's a package at https://mentors.debian.net/package/plplot -- it's mostly fine with one exception, it should have version 5.9.10-1, not version 5.9.10-2. The older 5.9.10-1 package at the same location has more issues and fixing them resulted in the 5.9.10-2 upload to mentors. I'll see if I can help for plplot and gdl on the short term, and we'll see later about adoption and team maintenance. Unfortunately the latest release of octave (3.8) breaks swig support which in turn breaks octave. We fixed this upstream and I have packages for the newest plplot release 5.10.0 which work, but they in turn rely on the latest release of swig (2.0.12), which hasn't yet made it into unstable. This is a little bit frustrating as we've been waiting a while now to get plplot back into debian. There is an open bug against swig regarding this. The required debian/ files are available in the upstream plplot svn repo. Copy this directory on top of an unpacked 5.10.0 source release and you should be ready to go. Once swig is updated I'll upload packages to mentors.debian.net. At that stage I'd be happy for some help to uploading to unstable. I suspect you know it already since you seem to be a member of the upstream development team, but just to be sure (and also in case others follow this bug report): A new upstream release (5.9.10) was released today[1] which contains a fix for at least #707268. From the upstream changelog[2]: 1.7 The D bindings and examples have been converted from the old version of D (D1) to the new version of D (D2) [1] http://sourceforge.net/p/plplot/news/2013/10/plplot-release-5910/ [2] http://sourceforge.net/projects/plplot/files/plplot/5.9.10%20Source/ (Stumbled over it by accident, because I've just uploaded a new upstream release of GNU Data Language and I wanted to check how the chances are for it to migrate to Jessie in acceptable time.) Thanks. I'm already working on the new Debian packages. The release is the reason I'd not uploaded packages to fix the open bugs sooner. The bugs are both fixed in the new release, but the D language changes made backporting a substantial task. I'll at least won't do an NMU solely based on the Ubuntu patches for multiple reasons: * There's no bug report in Debian claiming that the Ada bindings need to be disabled, too. Additionally I don't think I can test the generated packages thoroughly. I usually only need libplplot-dev as build-dependency for gnudatalanguage and the xwin driver. Bug#642715: gnudatalanguage: FTBFS: Error! plplot library is required but was not found
I'm not sure that this is really a bug in plplot. libplplot-dev provides support for a range of languages, including C++. It seems draconian to insist that all the bindings libraries for C++, fortran, ada, ocaml, lua and d are installed if the user just wants to do C++ development. That is why these are only recommends not depends. The package description does say To use a particular language you will also need to install the libplplot-xxx package for that language. This is a change from previous versions of plplot, but one that seems sensible to me given the expansion in the number of supported languages in plplot. Having re-ready policy I think that libplplot-dev either needs to depend on _all_ language libraries (which I will do for now) or, possibly better, the different language development files should be split off into different packages. Bug#614107: Update to status
Fair point. I'm now in contact with the authors to try and find a solution. One option they've suggested might be OK is to change from: In accordance with Section 7(b) of the GNU Affero General Public License, you must retain the producer line in every PDF that is created or manipulated using iText. to something like: In accordance with Section 7(b) of the GNU Affero General Public License, you we ask that you retain the producer line in every PDF that is created or manipulated using iText. It's not entirely clear to me that this is a valid term under section 7(b) of the AGPL, and my suggestion is to go down the route of 12(g) of http://people.debian.org/~bap/dfsg-faq.html and then if they wish have an additional term in accordance with section 7(b) of the AGPL that requires their note be kept along with the license. What do people think about these options? Thanks, Andy -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-rc-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact listmas...@lists.debian.org

Can you confirm exactly what you are doing? The octave instructions are from upstream and not Debian specific. They are also out of date (as it says at the top of the file). Under Debian the basic commands are in the path. You don't need to add anything to .octaverc. All you need to do is start octave, type toggle_plplot_use to switch from gnuplot plotting (default) to octave plotting, then type the plot commands. You need to make sure you install the required drivers. For interactive display this is likely to be plplot9-driver-xwin. I agree the documentation is out of date and I will correct it upstream. toggle_plplot_use does not use LOADPATH on octave2.9 it uses addpath instead.
