Dear Maintainer,
when I booted my system with the latest kernel from unstable, many of
the applications didn't work. That includes plasmashell (so I couldn't
log in into plasma) and chromium.

as in
somedirectory, mount /proc, /sys, /dev in somedirectory, chroot into
somedirectory and then it is a simple matter for apt. (You may have to
edit sources.list)
I went through it with my qemu images.

Hello,
this bug is fixed in the aforementioned version in unstable (not the one
in experimental). The telling sign is whether it does or doesn't depend
on libavcodecXX et al.
Therefore I'm correcting the found/fixed versions.

Some of the other changes were necessary just to build the package. I
removed the -fno-omit-frame-pointer because it seemed odd, but if there
were eg. problems getting backtraces it can be returned.
Anyway, tell me what you think, maybe on github if convenient.

now that we have linux 4.12 in unstable, please consider that the aufs
package 4.11+20170703-1 (taken from git) refuses to build on this kernel.
However, when I tweaked the dkms.conf file, it seems to compile and work
(with schroot) well.

I have experienced such freezes too, immediately after the upgrade
(6.9.something-7.0.22).
However, I can't repeat them -- they seem to have gone away. I have an
athlon-xp (eg. i386).
