Latex_2e-7 keeps a set of preload files in both /etc and
/usr/lib/texmf/tex/latex/config, both identical filesets. One of
these should be eliminated.

I tried export LANG=de but that did not change anything.

I finally bit the bullet and started work on the TeX packages to make
them build on multiple architectures. Well, since I don't much at all about
TeX, I'm not sure what's platform specific. I'm especially concerned
about endianness.
As far as I can gather, the only files that aren't

As far as I can tell, this is spurious.

The latest iteration of the tar package unfortunately is not able to
understand the -- flag. I suggest you not use that flag in dpkg-source
for now.
