I agree, and I always make sure /etc/hostname is the FQDN or something

I just had this problem today. My work around, which will probably
not help you, was to realize that I could indeed get the radeon driver
to work by using the radeon instead of the radeonhd
(i.e. xserver-xorg-video-radeon) driver.
