I am using the original slink, with some packages
updated.
I have found the problem, and it may deserve a bug
fix. The problem was actually of my doing. Worldnet
uses passwords with 'funny' characters so you have to
enter them 'quoted'. The pppconfig program in slink
instructed you to do this,

I tried to install Potato over my dialup line. I
downloaded the base2.2.tgz image to an unused
partition, and built the root, driver, and rescue
disks from the disk files. I installed the base
system and then tried to run pppconfig to be able to
get to my isp via modem. I gave pppconfig the same
