Unless I'm mistaken (which has happened on occasion),
cu stands for "call unix" and is taken from the name of a
program from the uucp suite which is used to interactively
dial out over serial links to other unix systmes.  That
program has been around for longer than SunOS (or Sun,
for that matter).  The debian uucp package provides /usr/bin/cu.
