Up to now, I'd only seen GIO used for gtk, and it didn't occur to me to
try it.

The AppStream ID and the .desktop filename will usually also need to be
coordinated. For example, GNOME Builder (package name and executable:
gnome-builder) ships /usr/share/applic

The upstream seems pretty much dead, though I'd like the keep the
package available. Popcon [2] is not too bad, and I think usage on
Ubuntu is also pretty stable (I know a lot of people).

It would appear that this affects exe-thumbnailer[1] too: the default
bwrap settings cause thumbnails to be missing entirely on buster / GNOME
3.30.
This issue is fairly new to me, so I'll have to look at what calls in
particular are causing issues with the sandbox. (exe-thumbnailer
