Hi Kenneth,
Where have you been? X11amp is now xmms. The package has been
changed accordingly.

I went to look for the sources to X11 amp on
ftp.debian.org and they are missing. I remember
downloading the source packages a few months ago, but
now a package search on debian.org shows them missing.
What happened?

I have yet to see that there are any applicable patents here.

mpg123 is in non-free because of its license. I did not find any
documentation anywhere that indicated that x11amp uses an

But that is not the reason why my first guess was non-free. It was
the fact that mpg123 is in non-free, and x11amp is (according to
the docs) based on it.

It would be nice... btw I just downloaded and compiled it... it does not
work... I'm investigating n

IIRC.) And which applies only to encoders.
I don't see why we ought to let some lawyers trying to make a good bluff
scare us.

Why should it be non-free if it's GPL?

Hi,
I saw the new alpha version, that has acceptable licence (GPL).
Although it's alpha, I'd like to see it packaged. If you aren't
interested, I'll do it.
For the -devel readers: section should be non-free, right?
Thanks.

I'd like to encourage the maintainer to ask them to release source under
a DFSG compatible l

done, but I won't upload them until Jens or Sami gets back to me.

In the FAQ, though, it says there will be source available sometime.

I'd put something like this:
Although x11amp is more efficient if made setuid root, doing so has
the potential of opening security holes, especially since it is a

This is my formal announcement of intention to package x11amp, a

x11amp is a clone of WinAMP. It's free to redistribute, but no
source is available, so it's going into non-free/sound.
Its home page is: http://www.x11amp.bz.nu/
