Does anybody have an opinion about this?
When udev is installed for the first time on a running system the
current /dev/log socket ends up in /dev/.static/ (which is not
world-readable) until the next reboot.

the system. I am open to more solutions. Should I bind-mount the socket?

Please always keep the full Debian changelog information in the package.
Of course, you can move very old changelog entry to changelog.old or
changelog.1 if they cause problems, but ship them in the deb.

Please don't even do that, the changelog is meant to be
machine-readable, and unless there is a standard for how to access the
full changelog, don't move it away. And even for humans, less
changelog is a easier than less changelog changelog.old etc.

That's *way* too long for a short description. It's needs to be fairly
short, say 60 chars, so that it displays properly in aptitude et. al.
on an 80 column screen. Also, you don't repeat the package name in the
short description. Perhaps:

Description: visual database design, modeling, and maintenance tool

Now, usually I ding people for long descriptions that are too short,
but in this case, it may be too long. Also, you duplicated the General
Information section. Don't repeat the short description in the long
description. Thing about some user browsing the packages, and consider
that they'll (usually) only be able to see the first 15 lines or so
without scrolling. What would you want to know? What would be sufficient
to make it worth scrolling through the rest? What is trivia that is
better left to the README?

For example:

DBDesigner 4 compares to products like Oracle's Designer?, IBM's
Rational Rose?, Computer Associates's ERwin? and theKompany's
DataArchitect? but is an Open Source Project available for Microsoft
Windows? 2k/XP and Linux KDE/Gnome. It is release on the GPL.

Let's see, it's in Debian main, so I know that it's a) Linux and b)
free. The rest is advertising.

I had to scroll through 30 lines to find out what database it supports.
Is it really mysql only?

The fact that every (L)GPL packages' copyright points to

put the *full* license in debian/copyright (be it a 'short' license

The year really should be included. At least in the US, not having a
year in the notice appears to make the notice worthless. Quoting Title
 17 USC Sec. 401(b):

Only for some pretty strange values of worthless. AFAIU the only
legal effect of the notice requirements you cite is as defined by
subsection (d): if a compliant notice is present, a defendant is
excluded from the defense that he did not understand that the work was
copyrighted.

A non-compliant notice still leaves the plaintiff in a copyright
infringement suit the option of arguing that the defendant did in fact
know that the work was subject to copyright. The only difference is
that the defendant gets to try to convince the court that he did not
recognize the notice as an assertion that copyright exists.

I think the package name is unfortunate, and the short description
doesn't help much. latex-utils could just as well be a collection of
nifty LaTeX style files, or something that aids in editing/index
generation/whatever. The short description doesn't help much here.

This package provides a Makefile to compile LaTeX documents (in ps or pdf),
latex packages to easily include xfig figures in LaTeX documents and various
scripts help the Makefile to correctly and easily handle its job.
  .
One great interrest of this package is that it automatically track most of
 the
dependencies of the LaTeX document. We should just have to create a Makefile
with the single line 'include LaTeX.mk'
  .
  Homepage: http://gforge.inria.fr/projects/latex-utils/

From this long description, it isn't clear to me whether the integrate
xfig more easily functionality or the LaTeX.mk functionality is the
core of the package. Besides, I think the we should have to sounds
weird in english, I'd rather use One can

I retry:

Package name : latex-compile
Description : easy compiling of complexe (and simple) LaTeX documents
This package provides several tools that aim to simplify the
 compilation of LaTeX documents :
 .
LaTeX.mk: a make(1) snippets to help compiling LaTeX documents in
DVI, PDF, PS, ... format. Dependencies are automatically tracked : one
should be able to compile documents with a one-line Makefile
containing 'include LaTeX.mk'. Complexe documents (with multiple
bibliographies, indexes, glossaries, ...) should be correctly managed.
 .
figlatex.sty: a LaTeX package to easily insert xfig figures (with
\includegraphics{file.fig}). It can interact with LaTeX.mk so that the
latter automatically invokes transfig if needed.
 .
And various helper tools for LaTeX.mk
 .
 Homepage: http://gforge.inria.fr/projects/latex-utils/

 Additional notes:
 -
This software differs from latex-mk (that has recently enter the debian
 archive) in two points :
 1) it allows to easily manage .fig files from latex documents
   (ie \includegrpahics{foo.fig})

I rarely use xfig - now this sounds as if the package would indeed
include LaTeX macros, or can I use \includegraphics with *.fig files
 with standard LaTeX?

Does the new description answer correctly the question ?

I would appreciate any help to improve my description as I am not a
 native english speaker.

Me neither, but still willing to help - but we should first clear up the
 content...

Thank for your comments. I am waiting for the next ones (from you or
others) ;-)

 Regards, Frank

Vincent

 Hello,
why is this severity important, sounds like wishlist to me.

Is it actually a good thing to ship the pc-file, therefore suggesting
to actually use pkg-config for finding pcre? We have done well
without using it for pcre for three major releases, and I seem to
recall that pkg-config is still a major source for unneeded linking
against indirect dependencies, mainly due to #340904.

First, yes the bug soundss like a wishlist bug to me.

Second, pkg-config _can_ cause unnecessary linkages, but only if the pc
file has the worng information in it, which would be a bug in itself.
There are fields for libraries or extra include paths that are needed
for dynamic linking, and the same for static linking. the extra linking
you are referring to is most likely caused by people putting static link
information in the fields designed for dynamic linking.

In and of itself, pkg-config seems like a pretty reasonable thing - it's
just mostly done poorly.

removal of lukemftpd and lukemftp from debian

2006-03-28 Thread Noah Meyerhans
Hi all. I sent the following to Takuo KITAME on Monday, 20 March, and
have yet to get a reply. Please read and comment:

The lukemftpd and lukemftp packages have been replaced upstream by
tnftpd and tnftp [1] and have not seen any maintainer activity since
2002. [2]

The tnftp package (an ftp client) is in the archive [2], and should
probably replace lukemftp. It does properly Conflict with and Replace
lukemftp in debian/control. However, it also does not get any
maintainer support and has had an open RC security bug with an attached
patch for more than 1 year. I will prepare an NMU of the current
upstream release to fix this bug ASAP.

So, before I file a bug against ftp.debian.org requesting the removal of
the lukemftp* packages, would anybody like to speak up in their defense?
I'm willing to adopt tnftp and package tnftpd so it can replace
lukemftpd, if that's what needs to happen.

Be sure to follow the Debian TeX Policy draft in the tex-common package

I only have a few .sty that I cuurently install in

And in my postinst, I use dh_installtex

However, it is the first time I see texdoc. The manpage does not explain
how to make the documentation available. Where can I find more

2006-03-28 Thread Christian Ohm
On Tuesday, 28 March 2006 at 19:52, Andreas Metzler wrote:

Well, maybe 'important' is too high, but I don't think 'wishlist' really
fits. I have tried to compile a program (the cvs version of cegui) where
./configure checks for libpcre via pkg-config, and doesn't find it, even
after installing the elevopment package. I have manually copied the .pc
file and everything works.

Now what will someone do who doesn't know how to investigate a failed
./configure run? In my opinion this fits the description of 'important'
(a bug which has a major effect on the usability of a package, without
rendering it completely unusable to everyone), depending on the
definition of 'major'.

Is it actually a good thing to ship the pc-file, therefore suggesting

I guess that's more for debian-devel, I only know that there are
programs that check for libpcre via pkg-config.

Wrong comparisons [was: etch before vista]

2006-03-28 Thread Gunnar Wolf
A Mennucc dijo [Fri, Mar 24, 2006 at 07:41:39PM +0100]:
 hi everybody

According to the latest [1] Microsoft announcement, Vista will be released
in Jan 2007; according to our schedule [2], Etch may be released in Dec 2006.

If we accomplish it, it will be a great feat: Debian will (possibly)
show it is able to relase two versions of its distribution since Jul
2002 (= woody release); whereas Microsoft seems unable to release its
own O.S. (even though XP has been out since Dec 2001, if I recall
 correctly).

 Yes guys, it means
 (...pseudo-stats...)
 Amazing.

Hi,

Free and propietary software development are two beasts so far apart
and so different in means, in scope and almost in every conceivable
sense that I have to answer to your mail ;-)

Don't try to compare us and them. Don't try to turn it into a
race. What if we win? What if we lose? Is OpenBSD better because it
releases more often and they write all of the code (to their base
system)? Are we worse because we take so damn long to release a new
stable version, even if we just fix the bugs and package the software
but don't always write it ourselves? Then Apple should die quite soon,
as MacOS X has not seen a major update since it was born, over six
years ago (it was 2000, right?)

Different software development projects, different developer
communities and different operating systems as a whole cater to
different needs. Sometimes we can -carefully- measure certain aspects
against each other, but if we want to be fair, if we don't want to be
judged as FUD-machines, we should avoid hollow comparisons as this
one.

Some time ago, I defended Debian's long release cycle by pointing out
the average user does not like to change - After all, Windows 98 is
still too common everywhere (and I could still say so today, as about
half of my Institute's PCs run Win98)... But I would not claim the
same today. Once again, Windows and Debian are both operating systems,
have both their advantages and disadvantages, but have clearly
different intentions.

How can we then measure up against Evil Propietary Software? Well,
start by believing we are morally superior (which I do believe). Look
at the sheer amount of code, and the average quality of two similar
pieces of software. Yes, sometimes we will win, sometimes we will
lose, but Free Software is maturing and becoming attractive every day
for more people.

Oh! And the best thing: If you want Debian(/Linux/*BSD/whatever) to
beat Windows(/MacOS/HPUX/whatever), there is something very easy you
can do: Code, document, report, fix, translate, meet, facilitate.

Greetings,

   * Fix module source failure to build on mips. (Closes: #358559)
 - The mipsisa32-be-elf version of hal.o is used on mipsel, which is
   little endian
 - The gcc flags passed by madwifi to select the processor conflict
   with the kernel ones.
 - Thanks to Aurelien Jarno, Martin Michlmayr and Thiemo Suefer for
discussing and providing patches to fix this problem.
 [debian/patches/03_mips.dpatch, debian/rules.modules]

Accepted wpasupplicant 0.5.2-1 (source i386)

2006-03-28 Thread Reinhard Tartler
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

Format: 1.7
Date: Sun, 26 Mar 2006 23:41:25 +0200
Source: wpasupplicant
Binary: wpagui wpasupplicant
Architecture: source i386
Version: 0.5.2-1
Distribution: experimental
Urgency: low
Maintainer: Debian/Ubuntu wpasupplicant Maintainers [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Changed-By: Reinhard Tartler [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Description:
 wpagui - GUI for wpa_supplicant
wpasupplicant - Client support for WPA and WPA2 (IEEE 802.11i)
Closes: 357957
Changes:
 wpasupplicant (0.5.2-1) experimental; urgency=low
 .
   [ Kel Modderman ]
   * New upstream release.
   * Add myself to Uploaders.
   * Convert to cdbs.
 - rewrite debian/rules to take advantage of cdbs
 - update control file build-deps
   * Update README.modes.
 - clarify that wext is used by default, when no driver is specified
 - fix exmaple of wpa-psk using a plaintext string
 - fix typo's
   * Fold pre-up scripts into one, and symlink from
 /etc/network/if-{pre-up,down}.d/wpasupplicant
   * Use VERBOSITY of ifupdown to assist debugging of wpa stanza's in
 /etc/network/interfaces.
   * Add support for wpa_cli action scripts.
   * Use start-stop-daemon to initiate wpa_supplicant and wpa_cli background
 processes.
   * Daemons now create pidfiles.
   * Quote tested var's in wpasupplicant.init.
   * Quote all var's in wpsupplicant.default for uniformity.
   * Move wpa_* to /sbin.
   * Conffile for wpa_supplicant now installed to
/etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf. That directory will hold any
other files that we may require to use wpa_supplicant.
   * Don't start wpasupplicant pre-up if the current kernel lacks support for
 Packet Socket (CONFIG_PACKET=y).
   * Fix blunders in the init script.
 - typo, $PIFFILE should have been $PIDFILE
 - init script exited when a configuration file WAS found
   * Force init daemon's pidfile to be the same as wpasupplicant.ifupdown uses,
to avoid duplicate wpa_supplicant processes binding to the same interface.
   * Remove the margin for error from the init daemon, by forcing the default
variables to be set. Helpful and informative comments were placed in the
default file. The init script will exit if these variables are not set
 correctly. (Closes: #357957)
   * Add comment to defconf about ctrl_interface and wpa_cli.
   * Add comments to previously uncommented dpatch's.
   * Include proof-of-concept dhlcient wpa-action script. Suggest
 dhcp(3)-client.
   * Thanks to Henrik Brix Andersen from gentoo for the ideas and inspriration
for some of the above changes.
 .
   [ Reinhard Tartler ]
   * install compatibility links from /usr/sbin/wpa_supplicant -
 /sbin/wpa_supplicant
   * /usr/sbin/wpa_cli - /sbin/wpa_cli likewise
   * compile wpa_gui with qt3 rather than qt4. (in order to faciliate
 backporting to sarge)
   * revert to debhelper 4

imwheel- program to support non-standard buttons on new mice
Closes: 359685
Changes:
 imwheel (1.0.0pre12-7) unstable; urgency=low
 .
   * Improve the last patch slightly, by once again allowing imwheel to be
started without the '-b' option. Many people don't use this option
since they are happy with the default (4 5 6 7 8 9), and therefore the
last upload caused imwheel to fail to start for them. Now the old
behaviour is restored, though if you do use the '-b' option, you
still need to add the spaces between the numbers. (Closes: #359685)
