Bug#404292: ITP: netcat6 -- an advanced netcat clone

2006-12-23 Thread Aníbal Monsalve Salazar
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist
Owner: Anibal Monsalve Salazar [EMAIL PROTECTED]

* Package name: netcat6
  Version : 1.0
Upstream Authors: Mauro Tortonesi [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Chris Leishman [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Simone Piunno [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Filippo Natali [EMAIL PROTECTED]
* URL : http://deepspace6.net/projects/netcat6.html
* License : GPL
  Programming Lang: C
Description : an advanced netcat clone
Netcat6 is a total rewrite of netcat, with several advantages:
 .
  * It fully supports IPv6.
  * It is far more efficient, utilizing flexible buffering and
minimal (or no) data copying or analysis.
  * The source is well structured, documented and very easy to
follow. One of the main objectives of netcat6 is to produce
an excellent example of AF independent networking and
efficient data transfer. The code has minimal dependency on
the address family or protocol type and can be trivially
extended to talk many layer 3 protocols.
  * Greatly improved configuration and platform indipendence.
  * Can support servers or clients that use TCP half-close.
 .
Some features of the original netcat are not present in netcat6,
either because they haven't yet been implemented or because
there exists better tools for the job. See the TODO file
included in the netcat6 package for more information.
 .
In the simplest usage, nc6 host port creates a TCP connection
to the given port on the given target host (using either IPv4 or
IPv6 as appropriate). Your standard input is then sent to the
host, and anything that comes back across the connection is sent
to your standard output. This continues indefinitely, until the
network side of the connection shuts down. Note that this
behavior is different from most applications which shut
everything down and exit after an end-of-file on standard input.
 .
Netcat6 can also function as a server, by listening for inbound
connections on arbitrary ports and then doing the same reading
and writing when a client connects. With minor limitations,
netcat doesn't really care if it runs in client or server
mode -- it still shovels data back and forth until there isn't
 any more left.
 .
Netcat6 can also be used over UDP (using the '-u' or '--udp'
option). UDP is an unreliable transport protocol, meaning some
data can get lost, but it's a very useful capability to have.
 .
Some of netcat6's major features are:
 .
  * Outbound or inbound connections, using TCP or UDP over any
suitable transport protocol available on the system (usually
IPv4 or IPv6).
  * Full DNS forward/reverse checking, with appropriate warnings.
  * Ability to use any local source port.
  * Ability to use any locally-configured network source address.
  * Flexible data buffering and control of MTU.
  * Flexible control of connection shutdown.
 .

Bug#404296: ITP: sshproxy -- sshproxy is an ssh gateway to apply ACLs on ssh connections

2006-12-23 Thread Vincent Bernat
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist
Owner: Vincent Bernat [EMAIL PROTECTED]

* Package name: sshproxy
  Version : 0.5.1
Upstream Author : David Guerizec [EMAIL PROTECTED]
* URL : http://penguin.fr/sshproxy/
* License : GPLv2
  Programming Lang: Python
Description : sshproxy is an ssh gateway to apply ACLs on ssh connections

sshproxy is a pure python implementation of an ssh proxy.
It allows users to connect to remote sites without having to remember
the password or key of the remote sites.

In fact, this ITP is almost a RFP since the package is ready and on
mentors.debian.net :

It builds these binary packages:
sshproxy - sshproxy is an ssh gateway to apply ACLs on ssh connections
sshproxy-backend-mysql - sshproxy is an ssh gateway to apply ACLs on ssh
connections
sshproxy-client - sshproxy is an ssh gateway to apply ACLs on ssh connections
sshproxy-extra-plugins - sshproxy is an ssh gateway to apply ACLs on ssh
connections

The package can be found on mentors.debian.net:
- URL: http://mentors.debian.net/debian/pool/main/s/sshproxy
- Source repository: deb-src http://mentors.debian.net/debian unstable main
contrib non-free
- dget
http://mentors.debian.net/debian/pool/main/s/sshproxy/sshproxy_0.5.1-1.dsc

However, it depends on paramiko 1.6.4 which is not yet in unstable
(bug #344734). I have packaged it (as an NMU) on mentors.debian.net
too : http://mentors.debian.net/debian/pool/main/p/paramiko

When paramiko 1.6.4 hits unstable, I will ask for a sponsor for
sshproxy. In the meantime, I may use dbconfig-common to configure
MySQL.

There is currently one bug in the package due to a problem in cdbs :
bug #386970. I don't know wthat the correct work around is. This
results in sshproxy not being able to run on install (but this works
on upgrade). The current workaround is to default to not launch
sshproxy on install (a settings in /etc/default/sshproxy).

Is Stan Vasilyev MIA?

2006-12-23 Thread Michelle Konzack
Hello *,

for some month I have already asked but NOW I MUST REASK!

Whats ging on with Stan Vasilyev? He does not respond to a singel
message I have send him an since the package xdialog is in
version 2.0 definitivly broken and has to many Bugs, currently 37
of my 80 Configurations/Administration Tools are broken.

Now you can tell me, I can make my own xdialog package (which I
have done for 2.3) but my VServer has limited kapacities and I
have had in the last 6 Month over 23.700 downloads from locations
I do not know

I think, Debian SHOULD ship urgently xdialog 2.3 and it need an NMU.
If you want to sponsor me, I can prepare a package and put it on
http//mentors.debian.net/

Thanks, Greetings and nice Day

2006-12-23 Thread Gunnar Wolf
Steve McIntyre dijo [Fri, Dec 22, 2006 at 03:04:54PM +]:
Bad news I'm afraid. I've worked through the mkisofs boot code again,

I'm looking further to see if it's at all possible to get (e.g.) hppa
and alpha to live in the same boot sector, but it's really not likely.

I might be stating the obvious, but the OpenBSD team (and I understand
it's Theo specifically who was responsable for this) spent a
nontrivial amount of time working how to make their CDs bootable in
every possible platform, with usually 3-4 architectures per
CD. Maybe (knowing their community is (even) more hostile than ours)
it's not an option to ask them for information on how they managed to
do this, but you could study a bit their ISO's layout.

Their ISOs are not freely redistributable, but if you are interested,
I can snail-mail you some older releases (~4 year old, IIRC) I have
around here.

Hi Joey, hi developers,

although my nspeed is a pure shell script, it was not hard to implement
the feature into ifdata of the moreutils package.

Under http://nforcer.de/debian/ifdata-patch/ you find the new ifdata.c and
the ifdata.diff to see what I've changed.
Make sure you have some traffic and run ifdata -bips NIC (bips=bytes
incoming per second) or ifdata -bops NIC (bops=bytes outgoing per second).

Have fun and mention me :)

Regards,
André.

be hinted into testing if its five days expire without any new RC bugs;
also that all other packages that have had to deal with moving conffiles
between packages may be affected by a similar problem depending on
whether they're upgraded with sarge's dpkg or etch's dpkg, and need to
be reviewed and corrected before release.]

I spent rather more time than I expected today cleaning up after my
initial attempt to fix bug #335276 (working around a bug in sarge's dpkg
with respect to conffile handling, fixed in etch's dpkg), which resulted
in bug #402804. Specifically, I had been moving a set of conffiles from
the old ssh package in sarge to the openssh-client and openssh-server
packages in etch for some time, and I was now also migrating the same
conffiles from the old ssh-krb5 package (which conflicted with ssh).

Initially, I was informed that it was good enough simply to remove the
conffiles in the preinst if their md5sums are identical to those
recorded by dpkg is sufficient, although unfortunately I didn't put the
effort in at the time to set up a proper test environment for this. How
wrong I was ...

I included a Replaces the version of the package where I added the
move logic. However, as previously discussed on debian-devel, this
turned out not to be enough, since unlike all other files in a package
conffiles stick around after unpacking a new version of their package
without them at least until the new version is configured, so (when
using etch's dpkg, although apparently at least not always with sarge's)
Replaces was ineffective. I decided the simplest approach here was
just to remove the versioning on the Replaces, since I never plan to
move the conffiles back.

Even after that, though, it turned out that removing the conffile is the
wrong approach. If you do that and happen to be using etch's dpkg rather
than sarge's dpkg, you get something like the following:

  [EMAIL PROTECTED]:/# dpkg --unpack root/ssh-krb5_4.3p2-8_all.deb

What would you like to do about it ? Your options are:

  N or O : keep your currently-installed version
D : show the differences between the versions
Z : background this process to examine the situation
The default action is to keep your current version.

A conffile prompt - exactly what we were trying to avoid in the first
place! (Justin, your conf-owner-transfer test case exhibits this too
with etch's dpkg, along with the Replaces bug above.)

The only way to absolutely guarantee not to get a conffile prompt is to
make sure that the current file on disk is identical to either the old
or the new version of the conffile. When moving a conffile between
packages, I'm not sure that dpkg will allow the old version, and in any
case there's no easy way to retrieve it since all we have is the md5sum.
However, we do have the new version, although getting at it from the
preinst when the package hasn't been unpacked yet is rather fiddly. As
long as your conffile is textual, you can resort to the nasty hack of
duplicating it in the preinst script, and that's what I did in openssh.
This time I've actually tested this, so pending receipt of any more fun
upgrade bugs I believe it works.

I know that there are other packages that followed the recommendation to
remove the conffile in the preinst, so I would encourage maintainers of
those packages to review their code with reference to openssh 1:4.3p2-8
in order to avoid nasty lurking upgrade problems. The key points are:

  * Grab the old md5sum from dpkg in the preinst and check that it
matches. If so, forcibly blat the

I write as someone preparing an NMU for
 http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=393311.

Template Toolkit 2.15 removed a few plugin modules from the main
distribution and I would like to package this new version.
 The plugins removed are:

 Template::Plugin::DBI
 Template::Plugin::XML
 Template::Plugin::GD

I've checked packages depending on libtemplate-perl, and the only
package that appears to use any of these plugin modules is bugzilla.
Would it therefore be okay to simply package libtemplate-plugin-gd-perl,
and have bugzilla depend on it (and possibly the equivalent
 libtemplate-plugin-dbi-perl and libtemplate-plugin-gd-perl packages),
and then upload a new libtemplate-perl reflecting upstream's changes
with a NEWS.Debian entry explaining the change? Should libtemplate-perl
then Recommend or Depend on the new separate plugin modules? My
intuition would be to avoid a Depends.

If Bugzilla can be updated to include a depends on the new package, it
should be turned into a recommends.

Later,
Mako

Hi Daniel,
I see you didn't take that a compliment, which I understand. I don't

to make you unhappy, so I'll attempt to clarify what I meant.
I did read some people doubt about a single person maintaining such a

packages, but I guess you too have limits, which could mean that your

Of course, you're the one who chooses how much you contribute. But in
IPW3945's case, since it was slower than usual, and I know you're doing

Sorry and huge thanks for your huge work,

powerpc: Writing hfs descriptor at extent 0

Writing genboot sector at extent 1

I'm looking further to see if it's at all possible to get (e.g.) hppa
and alpha to live in the same boot sector, but it's really not likely.

Within sector 0:

alpha
=
bytes 000-n : ID string Linux/Alpha aboot for ISO filesystem.. Looks
like that could be modified if necessary.
480-487 : length of the boot image
488-495 : location of the boot image
504-511 : checksum of the previous bytes in the boot sector
(otherwise blank)

hppa

bytes 000-008 : magic header
008-011 : location of kernel image
012-015 : length of kernel image
  016-019 : location of ramdisk
  020-023 : length of ramdisk
  024-150 : boot command line
232-235 : location of kernel image
236-239 : length of kernel image
240-243 : location of boot loader image
244-247 : length of boot loader image
(otherwise blank)

m68k (first 6 sectors)

bytes 000-12288 - hfs map (no obvious way to co-exist)

mips

jealously scribbles all over the first 512 bytes

mipsel
==
bytes 000-008 : 0-padding
  008-011 : magic header
  012-015 : boot mode
  016-019 : load address
  020-023 : exec address
  024-027 : boot file length
  028-031 : boot file location
(otherwise blank - may contain other boot files, but we don't use it)

powerpc (first 12 sectors)
===
bytes 000-24576 - hfs map (no obvious way to co-exist)

sparc
=
bytes 000-127 : ASCII text for disk label (maybe possible to steal
some of the end)
  128-267 : data for 8 sparc partitions
  268-411 : padding
  420-511 : disk params

So, options as I see it:

m68k, mips and powerpc will not live with anything else.

alpha/hppa: *may* work, but any display of the ID string on alpha will
look bad due to overloading with the hppa magic
  bytes. Otherwise no overlap.
alpha/mipsel: *may* work, but any display of the ID string on alpha
will look bad due to overloading with the mipsel
  metadata bytes. Otherwise no overlap.
alpha/sparc: clash, no-go

hppa/mipsel: clash, no-go
hppa/sparc: *may* work, but any display of the ID text on sparc will
look bad and depending on the sparc loader the hppa
metadata will confuse things - it will look like a sparc
  disk partition

mipsel/sparc: *may* work, but any display of the ID text on sparc will
  look bad

powerpc/m68k both use HFS data and a secondary volume descriptor. In
theory should co-exist with each other(as Apple have done in the
past), but I've no idea whether our stuff will work.

Plus: all of these options will require some gross hacking inside
mkisofs/genisoimage.

amd64/i386/ia64 all do El Torito boot; i386 and amd64 will both use
isolinux and therefore with some debian-cd hacking (already done) the
user can be given a choice of kernels. I know *nothing* about the
details of ia64 to know whether it can be made to co-exist with them
at all.

So, any combination of amd64 and i386 and (one, maybe two) of the
sector 0 arches should work together AFAICS.

If people are *really* interested in trying these out, I can put more
effort in. But as it stands I don't see enough of a chance of success
beyond what I've already done (amd64/i386/ppc) to spend time doing any
more...

Thanks, but there's no need to do that. Looking at their website I can
see that all their latest CD sets claim to be bootable on i386,
amd64, macppc, sparc, and sparc64. I'm already doing 3 of those
arches, and I'm really not that bothered about sparc...

 ssh-askpass-gnome - under X, asks user for a passphrase for ssh-add
ssh-krb5 - Secure shell client and server (transitional package)
Closes: 402804 403528
Changes:
 openssh (1:4.3p2-8) unstable; urgency=medium
 .
   [ Vincent Untz ]
   * Give the ssh-askpass-gnome window a default icon; remove unnecessary
icon extension from .desktop file (closes:
 https://launchpad.net/bugs/27152).
 .
   [ Colin Watson ]
   * Drop versioning on ssh/ssh-krb5 Replaces, as otherwise it isn't
sufficient to replace conffiles (closes: #402804).
   * Make GSSAPICleanupCreds a compatibility alias for
 GSSAPICleanupCredentials. Mark GSSUseSessionCCache and
GSSAPIUseSessionCredCache as known-but-unsupported options, and migrate
 away from them on upgrade.
   * It turns out that the people who told me that removing a conffile in the
preinst was sufficient to have dpkg replace it without prompting when
moving a conffile between packages were very much mistaken. As far as I
can tell, the only way to do this reliably is to write out the desired
new text of the conffile in the preinst. This is gross, and requires
shipping the text of all conffiles in the preinst too, but there's
nothing for it. Fortunately this nonsense is only required for smooth
 upgrades from sarge.
   * debconf template translations:
 - Add Romanian (thanks, Stan Ioan-Eugen; closes: #403528).

   * remove patches, now included in upstream tarball:

 + 12_kde_606923_fix_huge_memory_leak.diff
   * bump build-dep on exiv2 to =0.12
