Re: Bug#454162: libxine1-plugins: should not depend on libxine1-gnome
severity 454162 important stop CC'ing debian-release for input CC'ing debian-devel for further discussion among other developers Hermogenes Hebert Pereira Oliveira [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: Trying to install xine-console I found myself having to install a lot of gnome-related packages also. Tracing the dependencies I discovered that libxine1-plugins _depends_ on libxine1-gnome. Whatever the reasons are for this I think that I should be able to install xine without having to install such gnome-related packages. Maybe libxine1-plugins should only recommends, instead of depend on, libxine1-gnome. Yes, this is a consequence of the fix for #439389, #437906, #437693 (and probably other related bugs.) Let me explain the issue: in stable, the package libxine1 shipped all plugins in the libxine1 package, so you had every xine plugin installed in any case. However, the dependencies where mostly Recommends (some as Suggests). With lenny, it was decided to promote them to depends for several reasons: - they are actually depends for the shared objects. Not installing the depends will make the xine plugin loader fail to load them, but this is not obvious to the user. He has to look at the debug log and see what plugin failed to load for what reason - the decision what plugin was 'important' enough for which level of dependency is not really clear. Some plugins (like the ffmpeg plugin) was a straight Depends, some a recommends some a suggest. Since the promotion causes too many direct and indirect dependncies, it was decided to split the plugins among several binary packages: - libxine1 - the xine video/media player library, binary files - libxine1-misc-plugins - Input, audio output and post plugins for libxine1 - libxine1-console - libaa/libcaca/directfb related plugins for libxine1 - libxine1-ffmpeg - mpeg related plugins for libxine1 - libxine1-gnome - GNOME-related plugins for libxine1 - libxine1-x - X11-related plugins for libxine1 plus an empty meta package, which depends on all plugins available: - libxine1-plugins - the xine video/media player library, meta package The plan was to make libxine1 containing only the very essential core of xine (not really useful for anything but building frontends). Frontend packages are required to depend on the exact set of plugin packages they need, e.g. an console based frontends like xine-console (aaxine, fbxine, etc) have to depend on libxine1-console and X11 based frontends like gxine have to depend on libxine1-x. This was announced to the libxine1 frontend maintainers in advance. This plan has consequences for partial upgrades. Imagine that libxine1 was upgraded, but not the frontend package. This is entirly possible, since libxine1 is unlikely to change the SONAME. However, since nearly all plugins have been moved to seperate binary packages, this will lead to degraded functionaliy like not being able to play mp3 files (since the ffmpeg plugin has been moved to libxine1-ffmpeg), or not being able to display video at all (since the x11/xcb plugins have been moved to libxine1-x). I was then told by several people (including a member of the release team) that this issue was considered RC. Therefore it has been suggested to make libxine1 to depend alternatively on libxine1-plugins OR libxine1-misc-plugins. This way the user can choose if he wants a full installation of xine (since libxine1-plugins drags in ALL dependencies), or a more special installation (only core plugins and libxine1-x) is preferred. This bug is now about that all plugins are installed by default, dragging in too many dependencies at install/upgrade time. I have the following compromise in mind, which I first want to be commented on before I do the follwing changes: a) Let's introduce 2 meta packages: libxine1-all-plugins, which depends on all binary packages including libxine1-gnome, and another one libxine1-common-plugins, which depends on all packages except libxine1-gnome. b) Additionally, the libxine1 package gets versioned conflicts against all gnome/gtk2 related frontends in etch. I'm personally not too happy with b), since I'd expect those frontends to depend on the libgnomevfs2-0 anyways. OTOH, they don't depend on libxine1-gnome either, so they will suffer in a lacking xine gnomevfs and esd plugin. I'm listing it here because it has been suggested to me, and while I'm not too happy with it, I'm not too strong on this point here. Does the Release Team agree with the proposed changes? If yes, I'd like to do them after xine-lib_1.1.8-3 migrates to testing (most likely for the upload of 1.1.9-1, which has not been released upstream yet). If you think this issue is RC, please bump severity of this bug #454162. I'll then do an xine-lib_1.1.8-4 shortly. -- Gruesse/greetings, Reinhard Tartler, KeyID 945348A4 pgpoyrOQWY4Gn.pgp Description: PGP signature

Proposalto introduce compiler options passed from dpkg-buildpackage
This is a proposal to introduce a common set of compiler options which can be set independently from the package, and passed/injected to the package build process. It was first discussed at the last UDS; a corresponding wiki page can be found at [1]. == Rationale == The set of compiler/linker flags used for building packages is defined in Debian policy: * Packages should be compiled using ''-g -O2'' unless DEB_BUILD_OPTIONS doesn't specify ''noopt'' in which case packages should be built using ''-g -O0''. * Packages should be stripped, unless ''nostrip'' is passed in DEB_BUILD_OPTIONS. Currently two approaches are used to build the archive with modified options: * Changing the compiler specs to modify the default options (either by patching the compiler or by adding custom spec files). * Using scripts which wrap the invocations of the compiler and the linker. Changing the behaviour at this level has a few disadvantages: * The default behaviour of the development tools is changed unconditinally for all uses of the tools (not just package building. -fstack-protector), or for the most use cases (i.e. let build-essential depend on a package providing wrapper scripts or spec files). * Packages can hardly work around problems in the development tools (for example lowering the optimization level, overriding a default optimization level). * It is errorprone to combine more than one wrapper package. * The injected/changed options do not show up in the build log (in the case of spec files), or require extra output (in the case of wrapper scripts). The injection of compiler/linker options should be done in the basic package build tool (dpkg-buildpackage); the debian/rules file should handle passing/overriding the options to the upstream build system. Similiar implementations do exist for rpm (Fedora, OpenSuse) and the Gentoo build system. == Use Cases == * Optimize a distribution to build for a spcific processor (as currently done with pentium-builder). Involves setting CFLAGS * Build a distribution with a common set of security/hardening options. Involves setting CPPFLAGS, CFLAGS, LDFLAGS * Build shared libraries with -Bsymbolic-functions (no effect on executables). Involves setting LDFLAGS. * Test build a set of packages using a set of non-standard set of compiler/linker options, overwriting any package specific optimization options. == Design == We define a set of macros which are passed from dpkg-buildpackage to the debian build system (debian/rules). The injected flags are collected and passed to the upstream build system (LoicMinier: is this only done via the environment or via command line args as well?): * '''DEB_HOST_CFLAGS''': Optimization options which are passed to the debian build system and can/should be overriden by the package build if needed (default value: ''-g -O2'', or ''-g -O0'' if ''noopt'' is specified. Overriding options can be used to explicitely set a higher optimization level, or work around compiler bugs, which only can be seen with some optimization levels (the last opt level wins). * '''DEB_HOST_CPPFLAGS''': Preprocessor flags which are passed to the debian build system and can/should be overriden by the package build if needed (default: empty). This macro is seldom used (most build systems just use '''CFLAGS''' instead of '''CPPFLAGS'''). * '''DEB_HOST_CXXFLAGS''': Same as '''DEB_HOST_CFLAGS''' for C++ sources. * '''DEB_HOST_FFLAGS''': Same as '''DEB_HOST_FFLAGS''' for Fortran sources. * '''DEB_HOST_LDFLAGS''': Options passed to the compiler when linking executables or shared objects (if the linker is called directly, then ''-Wl'' and '','' have to be stripped from these options. Default: empty. * Compiler flags for other languages not mentioned above (Extend the specification as needed). LoicMinier: would it make sense to have libtool flags (LT_)? And configure args? What about setting the CC? A second set of macros is used to overwrite package options, mostly used for test rebuilds with changed cpu and optimization options. * '''DEB_HOST_CFLAGS_APPEND''': Optimization options appended to the compiler flags, which must not be overwritten by the package (mostly used to for test builds). Default value: empty. * '''DEB_HOST_CPPFLAGS_APPEND''': Preprocessor flags appended to the preprocessor flags, which must not be overwritten by the package (mostly used to for test builds). Default value: empty. * '''DEB_HOST_CXXFLAGS_APPEND''': Same as '''DEB_HOST_CFLAGS_APPEND''' for C++ sources. * '''DEB_HOST_FFLAGS_APPEND''': Same as '''DEB_HOST_FFLAGS_APPEND''' for Fortran sources. Note: The ''DEB_HOST_'' prefix is used to define these options for cross builds as well. For the case of a native build DEB_HOST == DEB_BUILD. We don't care about DEB_BUILD options for cross builds. dpkg-buildpackage sets these flags to the default

That is generally the role of the developers reference. Since menu-1 is not deprecated, #447390 is a wishlist. If menu-1 is not deprecated then lintian should only issue an info. That seems fair. Policy is happy to let multiple variati9ons compete, and let darwinian selection determine the winner. Then policy will happily ratify the solution the developers have chosen. 1. I want to be menu-2 dead if menu-1 obviousely is not. 2. I want to have one single menu format if there is no strong reason to support more than one (feelings are no reasons). 3. I want dh_make to generate files of the _suggested_ format. (Your announcement sounded kind of a suggestion for menu-2 and thus I felt my bug report would be reasonable.) 4.
