Re: Bits from the 4th Debian Groupware Meeting

2011-04-07 Thread Andrew McMillan
Hi Guido,

I have an interest in calendaring contacts myself, and while I
probably can't make it to such meetings very often in Europe I'd
appreciate being aware of plans, just in case I can participate in some
useful way, even if remotely.

Thanks,
Andrew.

The fourth Debian Groupware Meeting[1] was held in the LinuxHotel,
Essen, Germany[2]. This is a short summary of what happened during the
 weekend:

 * We pushed new versions of icedove and iceowl to unstable fixing
several issues with gnome-shell in the later. Unstable now ships
packages based on Thunderbird's current 3.1 branch.

 * The iceowl-l10n language package got resurrected (currently sitting
in NEW) providing translations for iceowl-extension and (in a yet
   incomplete way) for iceowl.

 * We've done Citadel ↔ ice{dove, owl} interop testing and bug
   fixing.

 * Work was done on Citadel's event driven SMTP client and IPv6
   compatibility

 * The z-push package got updated[3] to 1.5.1. The patent restrictions
are resolved now and we're closer to resolving the trademark issues.
So hopefully an upload to main can happen real soon now.

 * SOGo packaging made nice progress[4]. Remaining issues involve linking
against GNUTLS to resolve the OpenSSL GPL license incompatibility,
and handling of the embedded copies of JavaScript libraries.

 * We updated the groupware overview[5] page.

 * We were invited by the FrOSCon[6] organizers to join their barbecue.
   Many thanks for that!

 Cheers,

Re: Bug#494714: dpkg-dev - dpkg-genchanges should fold lines

2009-05-16 Thread Andrew McMillan
On Sat, 2009-05-16 at 02:10 -0500, Manoj Srivastava wrote:

It is my recollection that each field in the control file (and
perhaps others) was supposed to follow rfc822 (now rfc5322), and that
  says:
 ,
 |Each header field is logically a single line of characters comprising
 |the field name, the colon, and the field body. For convenience
 |however, and to deal with the 998/78 character limitations per line,
 |the field body portion of a header field can be split into a
 |multiple-line representation; this is called folding. The general
 |rule is that wherever this specification allows for folding white
 |space (not simply WSP characters), a CRLF may be inserted before any
 |WSP.
 |
 | The process of moving from this folded multiple-line representation
 | of a header field to its single line representation is called
 | unfolding. Unfolding is accomplished by simply removing any CRLF
 | that is immediately followed by WSP. Each header field should be
 | treated in its unfolded form for further syntactic and semantic
 | evaluation. An unfolded header field has no length restriction and
 | therefore may be indeterminately long.
 `

So, each field is always one logical line, but may consist of
  multiple physical lines.

I suggest we add explanation like this to the policy document.

It seems reasonable that we should follow this manner of specification,
but will this introduce any issues for fields which are currently
defined as multiple lines?

If we applied this unfolding to the description, for example, we would
lose the line break information, so I suspect we can't just pile
straightforwardly onto this bandwagon, but would need to make it
explicit that some fields cannot be unfolded in this manner.

Cheers,
Andrew.

So I think for next dpkg upload we should make dpkg-buildpackage stop
setting any flags by default, and switch the setting to go through the
command line arguments to override the package options instead of the
environment, so this would become the user override part. The
DEB_VENDOR env var should not be set either, and we should work on
getting a dpkg-vendor instead, before people try to start using the
 variable.

Then if we get consensus that this is the righ path, agree on the
makefile names (as once decided it will be a pain to change later on
in all packages), we'll need to ship the distro defaults file
somewhere and start fixing packages to include that makefile. The
 files could look something like:

 ,-- /usr/share/dpkg/build-options.mk
 # distro defaults
 FOO := distro

 -include /etc/dpkg/build-options.mk
 `--

 ,-- /etc/dpkg/build-options.mk
 # site overrides
 #FOO := site
 `--

 ,-- debian/rules
 -include /usr/share/dpkg/build-options.mk

 # package overrides
 FOO := pkg
 `--

 ,-- command line
 # user overrides
 $ make -f debian/rules FOO=cmd

That was really a very well-spent two months!

+1 from me :-)

Regards,
Andrew.

Bug#372111: ITA: spicctrl -- Sony PIC control program

2006-06-08 Thread Andrew McMillan
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist
Owner: Andrew McMillan [EMAIL PROTECTED]

The maintainer of this package has not updated it for nearly a year and
has been put on hold in the NM queue due to being uncontactable.

I have uploaded a newer version as an NMU, but unless someone
strenuously objects I figure I might as well just take over the job
officially.

Regards,
Andrew McMillan.

Alternative keysigning procedures

2006-05-28 Thread Andrew McMillan

 On Sat, May 27, 2006 at 04:47:20PM -0500, martin f krafft wrote:

I imagine an improved protocol for the keysigning, which is based on
an idea I overheard after the party (and someone mentioned it in the
thread): instead of the everyone-signs-everyone approach, it might
be interesting to investigate forming groups (based on connectivity
statistics) such that everyone's mean distance in the web of trust
can be increased by a fair amount in a short amount of time. At the
same time, such circles could be used for education by those with
high connectivity (and thus much experience). The problem here is of
course the somewhat unreliable attendance of people. Comments
  welcome.

I agree that this is the way to go. Who has time to work on implementing
 the necessary code?

It is something that has been discussed before, and it was certainly
something that I was discussing with Anibal after the keysigning.

The concept that Anibal and I were discussing post-keysigning was as
follows:

(a) Order the list of keysigning participants by centrality.

(b) Decide on a group size for the keysigning. Something around 10-15
seems likely to be a worthwhile choice.

(c) Allocate partcipants to the groups in a round robin following
centrality order and starting with the most central.

Produce the keysigning list, with group numbers in addition to the key
numbers (or perhaps instead of).

All of the other pre-keysigning activities are the same.

At the keysigning, the initial reading out of MD5 / SHA1 of the
keysigning list would still happen, as it normally does.

After this, the keysigning would follow two parts:

Part One

People split into their assigned groups and cross-sign only within those
groups. The intention is that these groups are small enough that
everyone can see everything that is going on. Experienced people can be
observed performing comprehensive checks, and inexperienced people can
be educated.

Part Two

Optionally, after part one is complete, some people may choose to
personally and individually participate in keysignings outside of their
assigned groups. Note that this can still be facilitated by the fact
that both individuals have their fingerprints within the keysigning
list.

==
Finito.
And gradually it fades out.

Rationale
=

Keysignings stop being fun ways to meet people after about 15 minutes.
For me, the worst experience was in Helsinki, with around 300 people,
getting sunburned in a carpark.

Keysignings are about improving the web of trust. The most efficient
enhancement of the web of trust will be if the edges exchange keys with
the middle. Signing keys with _everyone_ is inefficient, unnecessary
and promotes competitive behaviour rather than trust relationships.

Keysignings should promote education of WoT best practices, and not
_worst_ practices.

Keysignings should not take more than one hour.

So that's my 2c.

If people agree that this would be a useful approach, I am willing to
undertake to provide some additional tools within the signing-party
package to make such a keysigning more easily doable.

Of course the above does not address how to handle the people who didn't
manage to get their act together soon enough to be in the initial list.
There are several ways to deal with this also:

1) The additional list is produced, SHA1'd, read, but these people can
only participate in Part Two above.

2) The additional list is produced and these people are also
allocated to groups in round robin, but randomly, rather than in
centrality order.

and no doubt there are other ways to deal with it...

Regards,
Andrew.

This sounds great. We might want to consider letting people with
experience specifically opt in for the educational part. I don't
think it's a good idea to just assume that central people will be
happy to show up and explain.

Also, what do we do if the central people don't show up? It's been
 known to happen at KSPs.

I guess that you should choose a number-per-group which allows for
multiple experienced people in each group.

For example, with the Debconf6 keysigning there were ~150 participants.
If we had chosen a group size of 15 then we would reasonably expect that
at least the top 3-5 connected keys in each group would have plenty of
experience.

Of course the fact that the keysignings would be shorter would also
encourage more people to participate, as well. At least that is my
belief, having been tempted to avoid the last couple myself...

Cheers,
Andrew.

Please keep me in the CC list thanks... :-)

Accepted axyl 2.1.7 (all source)

2005-04-22 Thread Andrew McMillan
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

Format: 1.7
Date: Sat, 05 Feb 2005 12:20:28 +1300
Source: axyl
Binary: axyl-doc axyl
Architecture: source all
Version: 2.1.7
Distribution: unstable
Urgency: low
Maintainer: Andrew McMillan [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Changed-By: Andrew McMillan [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Description:
axyl - The Axyl web development platform
 axyl-doc - The Axyl documentation
Closes: 297047 297591
Changes:
 axyl (2.1.7) unstable; urgency=low
 .
   * Introduced 'axyl.version' file which resides in /etc/axyl - this contains
the current package version of Axyl.
   * Introduced the Axyl website 'database', a file kept by the system and
to which created websites are registered. Not crucial to Axyl operation
but is used by some scripts to better manage the Axyl installation. This
requires the 'install/create-axyl-website.sh' to create sites, and the
'install/remove-axyl-website.sh' script to remove them, rather than
ad-hoc copying to manage websites. This database is a CSV file and it
lives in ${AXYL_DATA}/system/axyl_websites.csv. It can be rebuilt at any
 time using the 'install/rebuild-website-db.sh' script.
   * Scripts 'axyl-databases-upgrade.php' and 'pg-microsites-installer.php'
use the new website database to iterate through local Axyl sites. This
provides a much more reliable way for users to upgrade all Axyl websites.
   * In wysiwyg editor we now use an img tag rather than an object tag, to
get around problems rendering object tags. We now use a standard 'Axyl
 Media' placeholder image.
   * Added News Article handling. News administration screen, plus full-featured
class to encapulate articles, and methods of viewing these in a nice
dedicated web-page, and list them in a sidebar. Articles can be grouped
into categories, and assigned a publishing location. Lucene indexing
and querying via the provided search field is all implemented.
   * Added a new calendar class widget to provide a user interface for the
selection of dates in a webpage. Provided example webpage of usage.
   * Added form_imagecombo class. Shows a dropdown select of images, and
previews these just below in a thumbnail.
   * Added privileges override for content-managed layouts. The default
groups are still 'Editor' and 'Author', however privileges for editing,
publishing and entry can now be over-ridden and assigned to other
user groups in the layout definition screen.
   * Many additions and improvements in the package installation. A website
'database' is now kept which contains all registered Axyl websites that
have been created using 'create-axyl-website.sh'. This will also be
rebuilt on every package install/upgrade. Also fixed problem with the
way postinst was updating the Postresql security file pg_hba.conf.
   * Added Microsites functionality. This is a front-end 'builder' which uses
Axyl themes to allow the generation/maintenance of sub-websites of the
host website, based on server URL (eg. virtual host servername). It
uses a cron-driven approach for publishing the microsites, which are
inserted into the parent Apache virtual host as a ServerAlias. Microsite
features have to be enabled in the control panel. If not enabled, then
there will be no overhead as far as website rendering is concerned.
Axyl now also partitions certain items by microsite, such as the Media
Catalog, News Articles, and Webpages maintenance. Also, Lucene indexing
and searching is sensitive to microsite and will correctly parition
content for each one, and also separately from the 'parent' site.
   * Added the Brazilian Portuguese (pt_BR.po) debconf template translation.
 (closes: #297047)
   * Added the Czech translation (cs.po) debconf template translation.
 (closes: #297591)

 dbbalancer (0.4.4-5) unstable; urgency=low
 .
   * Switched to libace5.4 and libpqxx which (closes: #240535, #229421) and I
hacked on things to make it build - I ain't a C++ programmer, so if anyone
wants to get src/tests/postgres_cc doing something worthwhile under
libpqxx they certainly have _my_ blessing!
   * Made changes to upstream code to encourage connections into DBBalancer to
fall back to protocol 2, since we don't actually support protocol 3, what
current PostgreSQL apps are all initially trying to use. At least this
