Re: Reaction to potential PGP schism

2023-12-21 Thread Cyril Brulebois
Hi Daniel,

Quick backstory: I stayed away from hardware crypto for a long while
since there were so many incompatibilities, partial support, or side
patches to get basic things to work. Over time, it seems it got to a
point where it's mainstream enough that you can buy a Yubikey without
much of a second thought, and get GPG to work out of the box on it…

… what does this mean for anything that involves hardware-backed crypto?
I'm thinking Yubikeys and the like, but also HSMs that might be on the
critical path to sign things like GRUB, linux (at least for now), etc.

Even if we end up with a brand new gnupg release on the relevant signing
host(s), I fear hardware devices might not feature all the bits that are
needed for those new features?

You're absolutely correct that packages were ready, and weren't
“reviewed in time”. I think I've already stated a few times I'm more
than aware of my part of responsibility for that.

That being said, being expected to review critical changes for stable
suites, in a component that's also used for every single installation,
within a few days (or be bypassed entirely), after years of being stuck
in place, isn't something that felt even remotely reasonable.

A few weeks ago, the switch was flipped all of a sudden in unstable,
breaking various parts of the Debian infrastructure (e.g. piuparts,
jenkins, etc.), without having debootstrap packages readily available.
Of course, one can add options here and there, but that cost energy,
time, and motivation, to a number of people.

I must point out that while I'm very happy to see progress finally being
made, especially a number of changes that Helmut stages and coordinates
(e.g. https://lists.debian.org/debian-boot/2023/11/msg00056.html).

But I'm not quite so thrilled with the way some other changes are being
pushed in an uncoordinated fashion, even less so when it feels like I
have to spend extra time on mea culpas.

There are more archs than just amd64, some of which with (apparently
temporary) problems; I suppose tracker's seeing errors looking at some

If you're concerned about the impact of no longer producing installation
images for this use case, you shouldn't. Building netinst, CD, DVD, BD,
etc. images happens via debian-cd, using artifacts produced by a
src:debian-installer build, which are stored under installer-/
directories in the archive. Those wouldn't go away in this scenario.
  http://ftp.debian.org/debian/dists/bookworm/main/installer-i386/

If you're thinking about debian-installer--netboot-i386 binaries,
that would be the exact same story, since those are built by packing the
contents of those directories.

If the system to be rescued is older than the netboot being considered,
that should be possible. If it's newer, that might not be possible. See
what happened when we moved from LUKS to LUKS2: an older d-i couldn't
rescue a newer system because it just didn't know about the new format.

I'm not sure how dropping one netinst ISO is going to change anything in
debian-cd: that's a very fast build, that's a small, single ISO, and not
having to download several GBs seems quite appealing to me. Having DVD1
only would really not seem acceptable to me.

I'm also very much *not* in favour of dropping images just *days* before
the release, without any kind of heads-up.

If the point is to limit the amount of testing done before publishing,
it would seem acceptable to me to limit i386 testing, and to only be
“reacting” to user reports about things that might not be working for
them (instead of proactively checking various combinations).

Cc-ing debian-boot@ and debian-cd@ for information, seeing such an idea
mentioned only on debian-devel@ feels weird.

I think that's supported already:

Template: grub-installer/password
Type: password
# :sl2:
_Description: GRUB password:
The GRUB boot loader offers many powerful interactive features, which could
be used to compromise your system if unauthorized users have access to the
machine when it is starting up. To defend against this, you may choose a
password which will be required before editing menu entries or entering the
GRUB command-line interface. By default, any user will still be able to
start any menu entry without entering the password.
 .
If you do not wish to set a GRUB password, leave this field blank.

Can be preseeded, or specified during an expert install. Definitely not
something that should be asked during a normal install.

As far as I know, get_path()'s implemented in meson's python.py module
(not the python3.py one), and the code path is the same there (no if
branch taken, value returned via the last return statement); also, both
have the same install_env (prefix).

The main difference is that in testing:

rel_path: lib/python3/dist-packages

while in unstable:

rel_path: local/lib/python3.10/dist-packages

This comes from setuptools 65.5.0-1.1 (NMUer cc'd):

   * Install distutils-precedence.pth, to avoid packages need to hack import
 order in setup.py. Closes: #1025216

which is consistent with the aforementioned rel_path's being derived
from a specific item in a list:

https://sources.debian.org/src/meson/0.64.1-1.1/mesonbuild/modules/python.py/#L452-L453

No idea how to best fix or work around this though. Good luck.

There's an existing golang-github-hashicorp-hcl package, kind of stalled
at version 1.0.0, which is depended on by close to 100 packages. It
seems prudent to introduce a -v2 package for hashicorp/hcl/v2, leaving it
up to reverse dependencies to switch to the new version if and when they
so desire.

I don't think that's needed. Using buster's and more recently bullseye's
version, I have this locally:

drwxr-xr-x 4 mirror mirror 4096 Jul 19 04:16
/srv/mirrors/debian/dists/bookworm/non-free-firmware/by-hash/

which matches when dak's config got updated with that extra component.

The git tree has a bin/archive_release that lists components explicitly
but it doesn't end up in any binary packages (there's a single ftpsync,
and it's not shipped there). Furthermore the 'non-free' string doesn't
appear in any of the files below debian/ftpsync/ after a build, so the
package doesn't look like it needs an update for that (even though a lot
of work happened in master since the last tag/release).

Not just blobs that were loaded, but also those which might get loaded
in the installed system (since we don't have all modules around), see
hw-detect.post-base-installer.d/50install-firmware in hw-detect (udevadm

The option/variable looks easy enough (once we decide what to call it)…
Not sure what would be best to expose it to users: bootloader menus
already have many options (text vs. graphical, normal vs. rescue,
accessibility settings, etc.), and don't get internationalization
support anyway. On the flip side, having to go through a full expert
installation is very nice.

Maybe start by documenting the option (probably installation guide plus
release notes), and of course implementing it; then see if/how we expose
it?

FWIW I've followed the answers to your mail over the last few days,
but I haven't had a chance to look at either the video or the slides
(only 4 days before your initial mail and the one I'm replying to…).

At first glance, it seems fine to be experimenting with a different
partitioner; of course all people are somewhere on the love/hate
spectrum regarding partman and the zillions of partman-* packages, but
it's indeed a shell maze and it *probably* could use some heavy lifting.
I keep hoping that simple use cases are made simple(r)… maybe growlight
could help there (e.g. “I'd like soft RAID1 with encrypted LVM, all that
with a UEFI boot — therefore ESP —, without being a storage wizard”).

I suppose some step (once you've experimented on a growlight-only
d-i) would be to have both partman and growlight, and let people
choose (maybe with a flag at boot time, or by entering expert mode or
whatever), until we have a better idea what works, what doesn't, what
can be fixed, what cannot, and until a decision is made for the next
Debian stable release.

Leaving the technical integration aside for a moment, one question
that comes to mind is whether this would be a one-shot contribution or
some kind of longer commitment to maintain that different partitioner.
I seem to remember earlier attempts at revamping the partitioning
step, which stalled eventually.

(Your recent mail to debian-newmaint@ is a hint; your apparent
steadiness of those packages maintenance-wise is another; and your
apparent interest in adding support to possibly missing features yet
another.)

Of course, one might object that the question is moot as there isn't
much active development on partman components (even if some patches have
been submitted over the last few days), but at least that's a known
(imperfect, but…) beast.

Feel free to touch base with debian-boot@ and/or debian-cd@ once you
have a working proof of concept that some people have toyed with; we can
discuss how the “alternative” part could be implemented (different
images, or both partitioners ship together, with some option/selection —
people might remember GRUB vs. LILO). I cannot guarantee a timely answer
(life tends to keep me busy), but you shouldn't see a lack of answer
after just a few days as if people were not interested.

> note that there would still be some questions where i'd need input
> from Project members (as noted in my Debconf [0] presentation),

I won't delve into specifics (I did mention I didn't do any research,
right?) but as long as your application can be controlled via debconf,
it should fit right in within all our installation images (text based
installer, graphical installer, network-controller installer, etc.), and
things like localization and accessibility support should be automatic
(of course you'd still need to get the translation process bootstrapped
for your own strings at some point, but the inner workings should all be
there already).

That's not entirely true. bullseye base, plus experimental:

kibi@tokyo:~$ sudo apt install -s crust-firmware
Reading package lists... Done

Inst crust-firmware (0.4-1 Debian:experimental [all])

What about using a similar versioning scheme but without the 0.0~git

Going for 20201226.e30ce3a(-1) or something similar would sort higher
than the current version number, and you could just wait for an
hypothetical switch to a “tag/version-based format” to introduce the
epoch? Introducing an epoch and an artificial 0.0 release right now
would seem a little odd to me.

   * When preseeding a local repository via apt-setup/localX/repository,
the repository key for Secure Apt needs to be configured with
apt-setup/localX/key. This key used to be set up with apt-key, but
its use is deprecated and apt's former dependency on gnupg has been
 demoted to a Suggests, rendering apt-key non-functional in d-i.
Apply a patch by Lars Kollstedt (thanks!) which adds the repository
key(s) to /etc/apt/trusted.gpg.d, following the approach used by
 pbuilder (Closes: #851774, #928931):
  - .asc suffix if the key file seems to be armoured ASCII (i.e. it
contains a “-BEGIN PGP PUBLIC KEY BLOCK-” line);
  - .gpg suffix otherwise. Please note that only “GPG key public ring”
are supported by APT, newer “keybox database” format isn't at the
moment.

   * Remove Christian Perrier from Uploaders, with many thanks for all
his contributions over the years! (Closes: #927516)

for gen-crypt, which turns into segfault at runtime, leading to no
password for the “installer” user, preventing remote installations
 (Closes: #926947, #928299).

Accepted debian-installer 20190410 (source) into unstable

Description:
 debian-installer - Debian Installer documentation
Closes: 820911 900918 920353 920631 920676 921951
Changes:
 debian-installer (20190410) unstable; urgency=medium
 .
   [ Cyril Brulebois ]
   * Bump debhelper build-dep and compat from 7 to 11. Finally!
   * Fix “build-depends-on-1-revision build-depends u-boot-rockchip”,
 thanks to lintian.
   * Set dpkg source format explicitly as both dpkg-source and lintian
 are being excessively noisy.
   * Drop source.lintian-overrides: the only override was about the
e2fsprogs build-dependency when it was still “Essential: yes”; as
anticipated it's now only “Priority: required”.
   * Bump Standards-Version from 3.9.5 to 4.3.0; no changes required, with
the usual exception regarding network access.
   * Review and merge Chris Lamb's work making d-i build reproducibly
(Closes: #900918), with many thanks! Remaining issues seem related to
 fontconfig's cache and xorriso calls.
   * gen-tarball: specify the complete gzip command through a tar option
instead of using the now-deprecated GZIP environment variable.
   * gen-tarball: use pigz if available, reducing build time.
   * Bump Linux kernel ABI from 4.19.0-1 to 4.19.0-4
   * Update translation-status for the release.
 .
   [ Chris Lamb ]
   * Set BUILD_DATE based on SOURCE_DATE_EPOCH, rather than the other way
 around.
   * Ensure the GRUB memdisk images do not vary on filesystem ordering.
   * Ensure the GRUB memdisk images do not vary on filesystem timestamps.
   * Ensure that generated EFI images have a determinstic FAT volume ID.
   * When generating CPIO archives (initramfs, etc), ensure they are
 reproducible.
   * build/Makefile: Add a clamp_mtimes utility to avoid DRY violations.
   * 'clamp' the mtimes of various files before they are added to archives
 or media.
   * Specify --invariant to mkfs.fat(8) to ensure deterministic filesystem
 timestamps.
   * Increase the BUILD_DATE resolution to include the seconds component.
   * Clamp mtimes of the final build results in the destination directory.
   * Ensure that running the 'release' target does not alter the mtimes
 under dest/.
   * debian/control: Document that #900409 and #900410 are required for a
 reproducible build.
   * Ensure build is reproducible regardless of the user's
 umask(2). (Closes: #920631)
   * Ensure build is reproducible regardless of the underlying filesystem
 ordering. (Closes: #920676)
 .
[ John Paul Adrian Glaubitz ]
   * config: Set DEBIAN_RELEASE to unstable for all architectures
 in Debian Ports. (Closes: #920353)
   * pkg-lists: Add debian-ports-archive-keyring-udeb package for all
architectures in Debian Ports for cdrom and netboot images.
 .
   [ Holger Wansing ]
   * Add dark theme shortcut (Closes: #820911)
 .
   [ Samuel Thibault ]
   * Rework dark theme shortcut.
   * Introduce dark menu theme.
   * Fix loading background image on netboot grub.
 .
   [ Ben Hutchings ]
   * armel: Delete unused package list for ixp4xx (Closes: #921951)
 .
   [ Vagrant Cascadian ]
   * [armhf] Add images for Novena.
   * Update versioned Build-Depends on u-boot-imx.
   * [armhf] Add images for BananaPiM2Berry. Thanks to Lucas Nussbaum.
   * Update versioned Build-Depends on u-boot-sunxi.
 .
   [ Steve McIntyre ]
   * Switch to using buster artwork for the splash screen

Thanks for checking with us.

The loader will look into /usr/lib/ in d-i as well, so I don't
anticipate any issues here (unless something in another package
hardcodes the path to this library, which we would notice and fix).

So feel free to go ahead as far as d-i is concerned.
