Closes: 428273 493601 530119 562359
Changes:
 smlnj (110.72-1) unstable; urgency=low
 .
   * New upstream release.
 - Upstream has intregrated a patch I forwarded to remove bashisms.
   (Closes: #530119)
   * Switch to debhelper compat level 7.
   * debian/control:
 - Replace obsolete tetex-extra with texlive-latex-extra in
   Build-Depends-Indep. (Closes: #562359)
 - Remove dvipdfmx from Build-Depends-Indep (superfluous).
 - Remove dvi2ps from Build-Depends-Indep (in texlive-binaries)
 - New maintainer (Closes: #428273)
 - Update to Debian Policy 3.8.4.
 - Move smlnj-doc to Section: doc to follow Debian override file.
 - Remove duplicate words from descriptions
 - Expand and correct short and long descriptions for almost all
   shipped packages. (Closes: #493601)
 - Renable sparc in Architecture line.
 - Add ${misc:Depends} to binary packages for debhelper.
   * debian/dirs: Deleted, superfluous file.
   * debian/libckit-smlnj.doc-base: Added doc-base registration.
   * debian/{libmlnlffi-smlnj,ml-lpt}.docs: Don't ship pdf documentation in
these packages; it is already shipped in smlnj-doc.
   * debian/mkorig: Modified script so it can be called automatically by
 uscan.
   * debian/{ml-ulex.1,ml-antlr.1,ml-lpt.manpages}: Add missing manpages for
 these two binaries.
   * debian/README.Debian: Updated to reflect changes to debian/mkorig.
   * debian/rules:
 - Add dh_installchangelog calls for libckit-smlnj.
 - Update to reflect namechange of templates in debian directory.
 - Use dh_prep instead of dh_clean -k.
 - Switch to separate unpack-source target and update .PHONY.
   * debian/smlnj.docs: Don't ship latex source in binary.
   * debian/smlnj-doc.doc-base.*: Register all documentation in smlnj-doc
 with doc-base.
   * debian/smlnj-doc.prerm: Remove this file; it was needed to fix a bug
related to upgrades from smlnj-doc_110.67-3. This version predates Lenny
and was never in a release of Debian stable.
   * debian/watch: Added commented watch file which calls debian/mkorig.
   * debian/{_wrapper,_postinst,_prerm}: Rename templates to filename.in.
   * debian/patches/use-psfig-not-epsfig.diff: SML/NJ's documentation still
includes deprecated calls to psfig.sty, which has been removed from
Debian. This patch uses the wrapper epsfig.sty. Long term, upstream
has been encouraged to port SML/NJ to use the graphicx package.

Re: where is /etc/hosts supposed to come from?

Hi,

I've just done a debootstrap install of Lenny, and /etc/hosts doesn't exist.
Where is /etc/hosts supposed to come from?  I think it should have something
like the following (copied from an ancient Debian install).

 127.0.0.1       localhost

 # The following lines are desirable for IPv6 capable hosts
 ::1     ip6-localhost ip6-loopback
 fe00::0 ip6-localnet
 ff00::0 ip6-mcastprefix
 ff02::1 ip6-allnodes
 ff02::2 ip6-allrouters
 ff02::3 ip6-allhosts

For debootstrapped installs, it's not automatically created by
anything. The recommended setup is almost the same as that, although
as Neil said you still need to add a hostname on to the first line.

See section D.3.4.4 of the installation manual. [1]

echinus is a dynamic window manager for X11 supporting
managing windows in floating, tiled and maximized
layouts based on dwm. All the configuration is made
via config file in Xresources format, so it is not
necessary to recompile echinus every time you change
  something.

Great idea. I think we don’t have enough window managers in the archive.

I think that at least in this case, this window manager is unique enough
to justify inclusion. There are surely many tiling window managers,
which fall into groupable categories (StumpWM/Ratpoison, XMonad,
dwm/awesome). Julien has done a great job developing awesome, and it
probably deserves its own category separate from dwm. Echinus falls into
the final category it seems, being similar to dwm. And it offers a clear
advantage: configuration via .Xresources (does any other WM support
this?) rather than via recompilation. I think this gives sufficient
reason for inclusion.

Daniel

In Xresource format != via X resources. I don't see why a particular
file format is a sufficient reason to one WM or the other.

You're correct, I was skimming and misread the description. I think the
advantage still lies in being reconfigurable via changes to a file,
rather than recompilation like in the case of dwm. But it is admittedly
more debatable than I originally thought if this package deserves a spot.

Firstly, you do not ahve to put that into the changelog, and,
secondly, one should not have to update a packagejust to up the
standards version string. I just fix local git and wait for a real
  reason to update the package.

I would add that updating the package just to bump the version is a
really bad idea from the POV of the user, who gets to incur a bandwidth
hit to d/l a new package that is identical to his/her existing one.

I don't think that anyone was every seriously defending that people do
uploads just to bump the Standards-Version, I think the objection was
more that bumping the Standards-Version needlessly clutters the
changelog and wastes space. I'll admit I don't quite understand why,
though. It's up to the maintainer to be as verbose as he or she feels there.

   * Properly install docs, upstream changelog, and examples in
libogginfo-ruby1.9 binary package, not just into libogginfo-ruby1.8.
   * Make libogginfo-ruby1.8 and libogginfo-ruby1.9 binary packages
explicitly depend on versioned ruby1.8 and ruby1.9 respectively
instead of just ruby. The source package itself must also Build-Depend
on both versions of ruby. This fixes a FTBFS in clean chroots since
 setup.rb requires ruby1.9 to build libogginfo-ruby1.9.

Description : Iceweasel/Firefox extension to use GnuPG on the web

FireGPG is an Iceweasel (Mozilla Firefox) extension which brings an
interface to perform OpenPGP operations over the web. With it, you
can encrypt, decrypt, sign or verify the signature of a text in any
web page, including GMail, using GnuPG. There are also special
buttons that appear specifically in GMail. This extension works fine
with any webmail or text box in websites.
  .
FireGPG is written in English and French and is translated to many
  more languages.

FireGPG was in debian up until recently, but was removed due to
security concerns. The new upstream version i'm preparing for debian
addresses those concerns, and i've been working with upstream to
address some other usability and security concerns.

I originally filed the bug that got FireGPG removed from Lenny, and I
just wanted to say that I absolutely support its reintroduction to the
archive. FireGPG was removed because the old version had security flaws
and it was too late in the Lenny release cycle to contact upstream to
cherrypick the fixes from their svn. However, they seem to have a
receptive upstream and it's a very useful plugin for firefox.

Bug#537776: ITP: mosh -- A fast R6RS Scheme interpreter

2009-07-20 Thread Daniel Moerner
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist
Owner: Daniel Moerner dmoer...@gmail.com

  Package name: mosh
  Version : 0.1.2
Upstream Author : Taro Minowa hige...@users.sourceforge.jp
  URL : http://code.google.com/p/mosh-scheme
  License : BSD
  Programming Lang: C++
  Description : A fast R6RS Scheme interpreter

Mosh is a free and fast interpreter for Scheme as specified in the
latest revision of the Scheme standard, R6RS. The current release of
Mosh supports all of the features of R6RS, as well as implementations
of most of the common SRFIs.
 .
Mosh also includes several other libraries that help extend Scheme,
including libraries that provide an IRC client, a wiki, a MySQL API,
and a port of the Tiny CLOS object-oriented programming system to
 R6RS Scheme.

I'm packaging mosh since it is currently the most portable
R6RS-compliant Scheme and also among the first to support Tiny CLOS.
I will wait for upstream's release of 0.1.3 to push this to Debian
since their svn currently has several key fixes.

This looks strange, it seems that the test found update-menus
executable, but it no longer is.  Namely, the shell has apparently
hashed it, since otherwise you would update-menus: command not found
 instead of permission denied.

This may be because the dpkg trigger for update-menus had been
activated.  Can you examine your dpkg.log entries of the failed
 upgrade?

(No sign of triggers, it's just that emacs21 gets configured before
 menu.)

 That one might be arch-related:
 | kbsd:/home/kibi# which update-menus
 | /usr/bin/update-menus
 | kbsd:/home/kibi# ls -l /usr/bin/update-menus
 | -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 113028 jun  8 13:13 /usr/bin/update-menus

That's on GNU/kFreeBSD. I still have to investigate why, but it looks
like if [ -x /usr/bin/update-menus ] returns true even with the
 above-mentioned conditions. Cc'ing -bsd.

Could this be the fakeroot chmod race problem again? (e.g. a faulty
build of menu)

From a brief look at the package in Hardy, the license would be

Is the driver in better shape than it was in January?

Ubuntu even requested to have it removed from their archive because it
was obsolete and broken:

I'm not sure if this is something that would be wanted in the archive

that Dell purports to support this chipset in the Mini 12).

I originally just sent this to debian-devel since I didn't see the bug

I'll keep debian-devel on CC. I've attached the forwarded message at

Are you considering using the version to better reflect when the package was
last updated? It seems to me that there are two plausible versioning schemes:
To do it by the date when you fetch an updated timeline from the website and
upload it, or to make the version reflect the most current Debian revision in
the timeline (e.g. 5.0.1 now).

To me, it seems like since one has to go through all of the source files
anyway, creating a list of copyright holders while you are doing it is a
trivial task.  I don't see why making this list takes any time at all
really.  Unless you are not actually looking at the code you upload,
which would worry me for other reasons as well.

I agree. The thing that I like about creating packages with the
wiki.d.o specification is that it forces you to actually examine the
copyrights of all the parts of a new package, instead of just use a
lazy link to /usr/share/common-licenses/foo. This is especially
important for packages that have many different hidden scripts or
architecture-independent libraries that might have different licenses.
With the kind of copyright file generated by dh_make, it seems like
new maintainers often ignore the risk of a package with a tainted,
unredistributable license problem.

In shorter words: I think something should be done about the copyright
file to encourage developers to actually perform an audit of the
license status of files in their packages before they upload. The
current copyright template doesn't really encourage this; I like the
machine-parseable system because it makes it easy to organize such an
audit.

Bug#518426: ITP: r6rs-doc -- Revised^6 Report on the Algorithmic Language Scheme

2009-03-05 Thread Daniel Moerner
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist
Owner: Daniel Moerner dmoer...@gmail.com

  Package name: r6rs-doc
  Version : 1.0
Upstream Author : Michael Sperber, et al
  URL : http://www.r6rs.org/
License : We intend this report to belong to the entire Scheme
community, and so we grant permission to copy it in whole or
in part without fee. In particular, we encourage
implementors of Scheme to use this report as a starting
point for manuals and other documentation, modifying it as
necessary.
Programming Lang: HTML and PDF for docs, Scheme for examples
Description : Revised^6 Report on the Algorithmic Language Scheme

This package contains the four parts of the R6RS report in both PDF and HTML
format. These parts are defined as follows:
..
r6rs: The report gives a defining description of the programming language
Scheme. Scheme is a statically scoped and properly tail-recursive dialect of
the Lisp programming language invented by Guy Lewis Steele Jr. and Gerald Jay
Sussman. It was designed to have an exceptionally clear and simple semantics
and few different ways to form expressions. A wide variety of programming
paradigms, including functional, imperative, and message passing styles, find
convenient expression in Scheme.
..
r6rs-lib: The report gives a defining description of the standard libraries of
the programming language Scheme.
..
r6rs-app: This document contains non-normative appendices to the Revised6
Report on the Algorithmic Language Scheme. These appendices contain advice for
users and suggestions for implementors on issues not fit for standardization,
in particular on platform-specific issues.
..
r6rs-rationale: This document describes rationales for some of the design
decisions behind the Revised^6 Report on the Algorithmic Language Scheme. The
focus is on changes made since the last revision on the report. Moreover,
numerous fundamental design decisions of Scheme are explained. This report also
contains some historical notes.

Chris: I have CC'd you on this ITP because you maintain r5rs-doc. I sent you an
email about a week ago about the possibility of making r6rs-doc a separate
package because it is such a radical departure from previous Scheme
reports, with the specification of a standard library. Also, the fact
that several implementors, including mit-scheme, gambit, chicken, and bigloo,
don't intend to support r6rs suggests that both r5rs and r6rs should be
in Debian concurrently. I welcome any thoughts you have about the matter.

Regards,
Daniel Moerner

Scheme will require more manual work because many Scheme interpreters
have bizarre names.

Second, as far as I can tell, Sections can be set for either binaries

that distribute *-el binaries (scheme48, which I just adopted, for
instance). I trust that this move will only move the binary packages

(Obviously this is not problem for scheme48, but it might pop up for
other packages.)This may be an ignorant question but IANADD.

Maybe that this kind of things (why is this not already addressed by an

Most complete ITPs just copy a draft of the long description verbatim.
The Developer's Reference recommends that the second paragraph of a
long description describe why a tool is preferable to others. [0]

It would certainly be nice if people expand on this even more when
they give ITPs (For instance, when I submitted an ITP for another
Scheme interpreter I described why it was preferred.)

I also presume that we would want vim-nox | emacs22-nox | editor.

Something I don't quite understand is the target audience: most people

Something that might also be useful would be a nox-debian-devel

What does nox- have to do with that?

Nothing at all really, but it is no more X oriented than the
packages in the suggested nox-system-tools.

I was mostly trying to give an example of a targeted metapackage that
might also be generally useful. With the exception of the dput |
dupload debate, most of the Debian packaging tools are canonical for
all users. In contrast, there are many many alternatives to things
like w3m or mutt or irssi. In most cases, people will know which
console web browser or mail client they want, which will require
manually pulling them in first before the metapackage (if it isn't the
first alternative) or manipulating the installed packages in aptitude.
This reduces the utility of a metapackage since it's no longer
automated. The debian-devel example was just meant to suggest a case
in which a metapackage might be more useful, since everyone needs the
same tools.

But that's another discussion and it shouldn't crowd this thread.

Bug#512268: ITP: ypsilon -- An implementation of R6RS Scheme with mostly concurrent garbage collection

2009-01-18 Thread Daniel Moerner
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist
Owner: Daniel Moerner dmoer...@gmail.com

* Package name: ypsilon
  Version : 0.9.6-update3
  Upstream Author : Yoshikatsu Fujita
* URL : http://code.google.com/p/ypsilon/
* License : BSD
  Programming Lang: C++, Scheme
Description : An implementation of R6RS Scheme with mostly concurrent
garbage collection

Ypsilon is an implementation of the Scheme programming language which conforms
to the latest standard R6RS. It achieves a remarkably short garbage collection
pause time and improved performance during parallel execution because it
implements mostly concurrent garbage collection, which is optimized for the
multi-core CPU system.

It implements the full features of R6RS and the R6RS standard libraries. It
also features a built-in foreign function interface for integration with C.

Although there are many Scheme implementations in Debian, I think it is
worthwhile to include another one because it is fully R6RS compliant, runs on
amd64 as well as i386, and is small. Currently, only plt-scheme fulfills the
latter two requirements but it is very large.

Cheers,
Daniel

Maybe I'm missing something, but these statements seem inconsistent.
If the user always has to filter the filenames, what does it mean for
it to automatically find the Python files recursively? In what sense
is it automatic? I think you mean something more specific than just
saying the user must always filter filenames since it's unclear what
that means.

that if we stopped the promise, and simply decided it would be our goal,
the folks who are against the promise will be against the goal, and will
see this as permission to simply *never* work toward the goal, and to
 obstruct others who do.

I do not believe for a second that there is anyone in the Debian project
who would *oppose* working toward a goal of free software. However, I
also believe that pragmatism is a necessary requirement for a project as
 large as Debian.

I agree. But I think the gap in understanding here is that there are
different interpretations of obstruct in play. I think that the
hardcore idealists (excuse this extreme term, but it's the most
descriptive at hand) believe that the Social Contract produces some
sort of positive obligation to work as hard as possible to make Debian
as free as possible. Under this interpretation of the Social
Contract, anything which is not in the name of promoting free software
would count as obstruction.

In contrast, it seems like the pragmatists (again, I think Romain
makes an excellent post--I will only use this terminology because it
seems common in the thread) see the Social Contract as promoting a
sort of dualism. [0] That is to say, the Social Contract says that we
should distribute free software and that we should serve our users.
It creates negative obligations not to promote non-free and not to
harm our users, but not a particular positive obligation in terms of
favoring one or the other. At times when these goals are
incommensurate, we must decide between them, instead of always
defaulting in favor of one or the other. In other words, you only
obstruct free software if you actively work to include it in
Debian--and I don't think anyone is advocating this (no one wants to
fork the kernel to avoid upstream's decision to split out non-free
blobs!)

Ted Tso seems to point out the problem with second perspective--the
Social Contract seems to, in its present wording, deny us access to
this dualism. It has very strong rhetoric in favor of free software,
with more pliant rhetoric in favor of our users. I think that it is
preferable if the Social Contract were revised to be less absolutist.
Debian needs such flexibility, in my opinion. Since I'm not a
developer, I don't feel qualified to really speak to such a change.

Maybe that's because I maintain packages with a large audience, but I
don't find that effect very important.

 More annoying are these effects:
  * Bugs that trigger with a specific combination of packages. In
unstable they are fixed very quickly, but even when adding a
Conflict, one of the packages can migrate to testing long before
the others and keep testing in a broken state.
  * Testing users don't check whether a bug is fixed in unstable.
It's not that bugs silently make it to testing, but they are
fixed much more quickly in unstable. That could be improved with
reportbug being stricter about bugs against testing packages
with newer versions in unstable.

Obviously, having more users test unstable is good. However, I agree
that it's not necessarily a big issue. A good deal of RC-bugs are
related to FTBFS, security advisories, package conflicts, and the
like. These bugs can pop up independently of how much testing a
package receives in unstable, so focusing on just increasing the
number of unstable users would produce diminishing returns.

Being stricter wrt testing migration is hardly going to help. What
will help is having more people actually use unstable so bugs are
 uncovered before they hit testing.

Actually I don't think we should recommend testing at all to desktop
users. Except during freeze times, I find unstable to be much more
usable, and keep testing for (non-production) servers.

I think this is true as well, especially in the context of other
non-Ubuntu distributions that track Debian. Sidux, which tracks Sid,
is able to keep almost complete compatibility with the main Debian
repositories with the exception of kernels. In contrast,
distributions that track testing often have to have much more complete
supplementary repositories. In part, this is due to ideological
differences, but I think it's also due to the fact that desktop users
can get more mileage from unstable.

Cheers,
Daniel

2008-11-30 Thread Daniel Moerner
With regard to the thread proper: As far as packages that are not
currently in Debian, dkms has already obviously been discussed.
apturl seems interesting, however.

FWIW, I find this quite strange... I know many non-FS users assume
that the good PDF reader is the Acrobat PDF reader. However, I find it
quite inferior both in usability and on quality to evince - Even now
that evince does properly(?) support provisions disallowing copying
 from or printing a PDF.

But anyway, and knowing this is not an Ubuntu list... Does anybody
know why on Earth is Acroread popular? Why isn't a PDF regularly
handled in a saner way with Evince (or kde-based lookalike) in some
 distributions?

Evince cannot properly zoom in on some pdfs. Compare pdfs at 200%
zoom downloaded from JSTOR (a commonly used and rather expensive
database collection) in evince and acroread. Evince has notably
inferior quality in this regard.

Also, prior to kde4, kpdf did not support rotation, which explains why
acroread as an alternative would have been popular.

Bug#497474: ITP: ipager -- netwm compliant pager application

2008-09-01 Thread Daniel Moerner
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist
Owner: Daniel Moerner [EMAIL PROTECTED]

  Package name: ipager
  Version : 1.1.0
Upstream Author : Sukhanov Vadim [EMAIL PROTECTED], Shashkin Konstantin
[EMAIL PROTECTED], Mathias Gumz [EMAIL PROTECTED]
  URL : http://useperl.ru/ipager/index.en.html
  License : MIT
  Programming Lang: C++
Description : netwm compliant pager application

IPager is a pager originally developed for Fluxbox but it can also be
used with other window managers.
It supports the following features:
  - Zoom on desktop images
  - Main window transparency
  - Transparent workspaces icons.
  - Theming
  - You can send a window from one workspace to another
  - Application icons

Francois Fevotte originally filed an ITP against ipager
(http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=392804)
but later closed it for lack of interest and upstream development.
I believe that ipager should have a place in Debian. On the Fluxbox
wiki, ipager is listed as the first pager recommendation, whereas
fbpager (currently in debian) is deprecated. Although there has been a
lack of upstream development, the developers have been willing to
provide patches through email to fix build errors with newer versions of
gcc, and the package currently builds fine against sid.

Bug#494863: ITP: transset-df -- manager for on-the-fly transparency changing in X

2008-08-12 Thread Daniel Moerner
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist
Owner: Daniel Moerner [EMAIL PROTECTED]

  Package name: transset-df
  Version : 6
Upstream Author : Daniel Forchheimer [EMAIL PROTECTED]
  URL : http://www.forchheimer.se/transset-df/
License : 'Use however you want. I can't stop you': public domain
 parts.

  Programming Lang: C
Description : manager for on-the-fly transparency changing in X

transset-df is a program that allows the user to change window
transparencies on the fly. Supported methods include using window
manager hotkeys, 'select by pointing' without actually clicking a window,
and selecting by name and window id. transset-df is a modified version
of xorg's transset and requires compositing to function. It is meant
to allow a windowmanger-independent way to support transparency.

I have been in contact with the upstream developer, who has expressed
interest in bringing transset-df into debian. Unlike transset, it has
had releases in 2005, 2006, and 2007, and is still being slowly
developed upstream. The developer is willing to explicitly provide a
better license if the public domain parts license is deemed unacceptable
for Debian.

Re: tools/ and dftp on mirrors

2008-08-07 Thread Daniel Moerner
Hello,

Although it is doubtful that anyone actually uses all of those zip
files in order to install debian, I think it is very likely that other
linux sites point to the debian/tools directory to inform people where
to download rawrite and md5sum, two relatively common utilities needed
if you have a linux system at hand. I don't think this is a reason to
stop their removal, however. A quick google search reveals that while
Apple points to the Debian mirrors,
(http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=71921) the document
was created in 1999. It's probably safe to remove them.
