/usr/share/vdr-dev/dependencies.sh. But the shebang simply is nothing to
 worry about.

May I ask what's the reason you're using this kind of a convoluted
system? Wouldn't it be simpler to separate debian/make-special-vdr.sh
and debian/rules, and call debian/make-special-vdr.sh directly when
the special cases are needed? debian/rules is a specific interface for
Debian building, why are you using that same interface for other
purposes?

IMHO, except package with just SONAME bump, packages in NEW queue are
better processed in a FIFO manner. Just my two cents.

Most of the time this is the case. But, if you upload a large, complex
package, that might get passed by for a while so that several small,
easy packages might be processed in the same time.

2009-03-25 Thread Kalle Kivimaa
Jonathan Wiltshire deb...@jwiltshire.org.uk writes:
I enquired previously about whether we might have some developers
assist the ftpmasters by pre-assessing packages and reporting
appropriately, which might ease the process. I don't know if this would
actually help them or just duplicate work, since they need to be sure
that it's been done properly in any case. (ftpmasters: your thoughts?)

Most of the REJECTs are very trivial, so any peer review helps to spot
them. I'd say that 90% of the REJECTs are simple the package contains
license X files but X isn't listed in debian/copyright. Spotting
these before the package hits NEW speeds up the process a lot.

To put this into context: I had one package rejected recently for
trivial incompleteness in debian/copyright, and I should know better -
but you become blind to your own work, so having another pair of eyes
go through the source does help.

I have several very small ocaml packages waiting in NEW for several
weeks now. I am upstream on these packages, and, honnestly, it takes
few minutes to check them (only 3 files of code in tarball).

There are currently 46 packages in NEW which have been there for more
than one month, so your packages are still quite far in the queue.

Fortunately, there is only one package which has been there for more
than two months.

You seem to be unable for collaboration as you try to blackmail me.

Stating a fact is not blackmail. As SFLC has determined that CDDL and
GPL are incompatible [1], Debian is unable to distribute any software
which contains code with those two licenses mixed in. If you wish for
the cdrtools to be included in Debian (or in any major Linux
distribution), you should fix that problem. This is nonnegotiable, as
we would be breaking the copyright law by distributing software for
which we have no license to do so.

If you feel that the SFLC's opinion is wrong, you are of course free
to provide us with competent legal advice countering SFLC's opinion.

Bug#509732: Debian policy doesn't feature RC bugs

2008-12-26 Thread Kalle Kivimaa
José Luis González jlgon...@ya.com writes:
System. This makes it impossible to report a bug with RC severity in
the Bug Tracking System that permits RC bugs to remain in Debian when
the report is closed incorrectly and nobody notices before it is
archived (please see bug #227941.) Since the problem is only specific
to that bug, it would suffice to raise severity of #227941 to
 serious.

Why on earth would #227941 be anything but a wishlist? It is very easy
to reopen an archived bug, all you need to do is unarchive it first.

For your main point, I don't think BTS is a release system, so bugs
filed against it won't be RC, no matter what their BTS severity
happens to be - just like bugs filed against the ftp.debian.org
pseudopackage won't affect the release. I also don't think BTS is
something that should be described in the Policy Manual.

Anyway, this bug is definitely not general, it is debian-policy.
Please change it.

The NEW queue is constantly being processed. Unfortunately it seems

the queue grows. Then at some point the ftpmasters get too annoyed
with it and have a weekend NEW cleaning session, bringing it down to a
more manageable size (50-60 packages).

Seems like it's time for another such session, the queue is at 176

These things are the major slowdowns, at least for me, when doing NEW
processing:

- package contains files under different license
- package contains files with differing copyright headers
- package has many copyright holders and these differ randomly between
  files
- package has a large directory hierarchy

If you have a package with a single license, a handful of copyright
holders and identical copyright headers in every file with a flat
source hierarchy, scanning through the package is pretty fast. Then,
if you've also made sure that you don't get any lintian warnings and
your debian-directory is clear (especially debian/rules), the whole
process is pretty painless.

 Why is that relevant?

Lintian errors are almost always an immediate REJECT, so they don't
really slow down the process. Warnings slow the process down as then
I'm required to make a judgement call as to allow the package in or
not, so I'm much happier if the packager deals with them beforehand.

debian/control and debian/copyright are the two main files for
ftpmaster checks, so having those clear and well written makes my job
faster. debian/changelog needs to have valid information, too.
debian/rules I check to make sure that it is sane - or at least looks
like sane. debian/source.lintian-overrides is always checked.

Well, we ftpmasters and assistants routinely REJECT packages

base this policy on the DFSG as explained in

that documentation needs to comply with the DFSG.

In practice, then, documentation simply isn't different enough to
warrant different standards: we still wish to provide source code in
the same manner as for programs, we still wish to be able to modify

conveniently as possible, and we wish to be able to provide our users
with exactly the documentation they want, without extraneous

As we don't accept program object code without source, we are not
accepting document binaries without source, either. For the motivation

Do you claim a PDF file is a binary file, or a program object ? Even
if PDF was a programming language, as proposed in another anwser, it

I grant you that it is possible for the upstream to use the PDF file
as the preferred form for modifications (if it's not
packed/encrypted), and if such a case comes up, I think we'll
(grudgingly) accept it. 99.999% of the time the document is in fact
modified in some other format and only distributed as PDF.

Furthermore, requirement to provide source code is a consequence of the
requirement to be able to modify the program. Again, if I provide a manual
for blind people consisting in a wav (or a ogg/vorbis) file, what kind of
source would you ask for then ?

We will ask for whatever is your preferred form for modifications. It
might be the actual binary in your case.

 DPL?

Well, if a package is in NEW for a long time, that's something that
really cannot be mediated, as it probably means that none of the
ftpmasters (or assistants) have had the time to look into it (meaning
it is very likely a very complex package with licensing issues), and
no authority in Debian can force any project member to do work the
member doesn't want to do.

If a package is REJECTED with a reason the maintainer thinks is
invalid, I think the first step should be to tell the ftpmaster (as a
group) the reasons. It is always possible that a ftpmaster (as a
person) has made a mistake.

Bug#503305: ITP: libjabsorb-java -- Java to Javascript object request broker

2008-10-24 Thread Kalle Kivimaa
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist
Owner: Kalle Kivimaa [EMAIL PROTECTED]

* Package name: libjabsorb-java
  Version : 1.3
Upstream Author : Jabsorb Team [EMAIL PROTECTED]
* URL : http://jabsorb.org/
* License : Apache 2.0
  Programming Lang: Java
Description : Java to Javascript object request broker

Simple and lightweight Ajax/Web 2.0 framework that allows you to call
methods in a Java web application from JavaScript code running in a web
browser as if they were local objects residing directly in the browser.

jabsorb handles all the details of marshalling and unmarshalling objects
back and forth between the client and server so that you can focus on
writing your application features.

jabsorb makes use of the JSON-RPC protocol for it's transport mechanism.
JSON-RPC is a standard protocol and jabsorb can interoperate with other
standard JSON-RPC clients and servers that may be written in other
languages.

Starting with jabsorb 1.2, additional ORB functionality has been added,
and it extends the basic JSON-RPC protocol to allow for passing data
structures that contain Circular References.

Would it be a good compromise between SCs #1, #3 and #4 if we made an
exhaustive list of non-free bits in main, and make it our goal that the
list gets smaller between each release and not to add anything to
that list?

How can you configure the QMail to send error messages only to
non-forged sender addresses? I don't see any way of differentiating
these, so the only way to do it is during the SMTP session.

public domain (if the modifications is ok that is - then we're back to
my original point - ARE we allowed to distribute modified versions!?).

Debian-legal is the right list to discuss this, in my opinion the new
license is DFSG-free.

qmail-src has been in the archive since 1997, so any binary must have
been there before that.

Why was it removed from Debian GNU/Linux in the first place!?

It's never been in Debian. The source package is in non-free, as the
license didn't permit binary distribution. See e.g.

OK, that's possible, I can only remember back to about 2000, when
there was only the source package. If it has been included as a
binary, then it must have been removed as distributing a binary used
to be illegal until the (recent?) license change.

Yes, the license has been changed, QMail is now fully distributable

Re: Second call for votes for the debian project leader election 2007

2007-03-28 Thread Kalle Kivimaa
Ben Pfaff [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes:
With Gnus+Mailcrypt, I was unable to vote with a signed but not
encrypted ballot. The voting daemon claimed that there was some
kind of quoted-printable problem. This surprised me: Gnus and
Mailcrypt have not caused problems for me with any previous
votes. However, this is the only ballot I recall containing
non-ASCII characters, which could be the cause.

As I used to have all my outgoing emails default to ISO 8859-1 charset
I was unable to vote with Gnus+Mailcrypt until I changed the default
to be ASCII. So, as I now had that same problem again, I'm guessing
the problem is with Raphaël's non-ASCII e+umlaut, which makes Gnus use
quoted-printable, which then isn't valid as seen by devotee (I'm
guessing that Gnus encodes the signed mail and devotee wants to
verify before decoding).

So then I sent in a signed and encrypted ballot. This caused the
whole ballot to be base64-encoded. Presumably this sidestepped
the quoted-printable problem, because it was accepted.

Thanks for the tip, need to use this. Didn't think of it myself.

Re: Second call for votes for the debian project leader election 2007

2007-03-28 Thread Kalle Kivimaa
Simon Josefsson [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes:
Mailcrypt doesn't, as far as I know, support PGP/MIME (RFC 3156).
PGP/MIME is the only standards-conforming way to do OpenPGP signatures
containing non-ASCII text. Check your e-mail if it contains a
 top-level Content-Type of multipart/signed. If it doesn't, you used
 the vanilla inline OpenPGP type.

Yes, I know that. When I last tried to vote using PGP/MIME, devotee
didn't like that either, so as I was able to get devotee to like my
ASCII inline signed ballot, I didn't dig deeper into the problem with
PGP/MIME and Gnus and XEmacs.

Re: question for all candidates

2006-03-09 Thread Kalle Kivimaa
[Moving this to -devel, please reply only there, this is not really
voting related stuff. We are talking about things to improve keyring
maintenance, for those not reading -vote.]

Anthony Towns aj@azure.humbug.org.au writes:
So first one was the spam problem, keyring-maint is a well-known address,
and mails that are meant to go to it could be in all sorts of weird
formats. There's already magic debian.org handling that'll drop stuff
without a pseudo-header in the mail (for [EMAIL PROTECTED]), or without
a specific tag in the subject which should mostly solve the problem,
which mostly requires working out some tags/headers and making sure all
 the appropriate documentation is updated.

Could these mails be required to have a valid GPG signature (either
for a key in a public keyserver or a DD key)? This would eliminate the
spam problem (almost) entirely.

The third thing was to develop some new scripts to manage
debian-keyring.gpg in a more componentised manner -- rather than
one huge blob, have many small files that are independently auditable
(this is the key for [EMAIL PROTECTED], it's authorised because it came
via [EMAIL PROTECTED] after blah lost their key in a tragic accident
involving a watermelon, it's signed by foo and bar...). The scripts
to manage all this have to be simple, obviously correct and secure,
and also fast enough to be usable.

I think I could at least try to tackle this, as this doesn't need
anything special. If somebody else is already working on this, I would
appreciate a heads-up :)

Apparently there's been some mention of this on -private; I'm not
 sure when.

I recall some discussion, yes.

Petter Reinholdtsen [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes:
I guess that depends on the viewpoint of the reader what the results
were. It is hard to tell if there is a vocal minority making a lot of
noise, or if there is a majority disagreeing with the criteria.

It's actually pretty easy. Count the number of posters that seem to
disagree. If this number is over half of the current developer count,
then yes, a majority of the developers are in opposition. What you
_cannot_ do is say because over 50% of the people participating in
the discussion disagree with the proposal, over 50% of the developers
disagree.

Personally, I find the list of requirements sensible, and very
understandable after the clarifying rounds on the lists. This colors
 my view of the discussion.

Me too.

Actually, the 98% rule is not in the proposal. It was given as a
possible rule of thumb when you asked for more concrete guidelines.

Re: To Linux or not to Linux

2005-08-31 Thread Kalle Kivimaa
Henning Makholm [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes:
In most places we already call our operating system simply Debian. I
think we should just go through the website (and CD generation scripts
and such) and remove the few remaining references to GNU/Linux.

This is an annoying problem for us, in my opinion. On one hand, your
solution would be the best from the Debian as a brand point of view,
it removes the Linux-attribute, which would help new users to realize
that Debian is a Linux-based (and GNU-based) distribution. Paying $200
a year to LMI wouldn't be smart, either, unless we would get a donor
for that (like LMI? :)

Re: Greylisting for @debian.org email, please

2005-06-20 Thread Kalle Kivimaa
Russell Coker [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes:
Why would it be such a problem if you use a non-Debian email address for
Debian correspondence? As far as I recall I have never used my Debian email
address in the From: field of an email or in a Debian package maintainer
 field.

Like I said, it wouldn't be a problem if I changed to one of my
alternative addresses. I just wanted to point out that a
non-configurable spam filtering system on Debian addresses probably
would cause some people to switch from Debian addresses to non-Debian
ones. If the Project wants to promote using Debian addresses for
Debian related correspondence, then that should be taken into account
when deciding what spam filtering system to use. If not, then of
course it is a non-issue.

Re: Greylisting for @debian.org email, please

2005-06-16 Thread Kalle Kivimaa
Stig Sandbeck Mathisen [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes:
I've got experience with use of greylisting for a mail platform with
over 1M accounts. Enabling greylisting for this platform reduced
delivered spam with 80-90%. This is simply because most of the
infected machines does not attempt a second delivery of a mail
connection terminated with a 4xx (temporary) error message.

How many complaints for messages not delivered did you get?

I do _not_ want to have my debian.org mail forwarding go through a
greylisting service. I've had to deal with one too many user
complaints due to greylisting. If it is a configurable service, then
fine, other people may have different experiences, but if greylisting
becomes a mandatory feature, I guess I have to start using
non-greylisted (ie. non-Debian) addresses in my Debian correspondence.

Package priority change?

2005-03-17 Thread Kalle Kivimaa
Before filing any bugs on this matter to the BTS, I'd like to check
who is responsible for changing the priority of a package? Is it the
ftpmasters or the package maintainer?

The package in question is k3b, which should depend on cdrdao, but
cdrdao is too low priority for that. So, either k3b needs to be
lowered or cdrdao upgraded.

Re: Do not make gratuitous source uploads just to provoke the buildds!

But do you notice when the same packages keep showing up at the end of
the queue for weeks? The queue can be as small as 1 package inbetween
and that 1 package could still never get build.

Just out of curiosity, what is the record time for any package on any
arch to have been on the list (or, what is the longest ever time any
arch has had a non-empty list)?

Re: Let's stop feeding the NVidia cuckoo

2005-03-04 Thread Kalle Kivimaa
Goswin von Brederlow [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes:
Source code is source code. Obfuscated or not does not change that. It
fullfills at least the letter of DFSG#2. For it to violate DFSG#2 you
would have to show that it is not source and the gcc already prooves
you wrong there. If you use 'obfuscation' or in other words
'readability' as measurement what source is then a lot of perl code
would not qualify in my eyes.

Source code is commonly defined as the author's most preferred source
of making modifications. If the author actually works with the
obfuscated files, then fine, that is source. But if the author works
with the unobfuscated version, then the obfuscated files are something
like Java class files, not source.

Or do you claim that any precompiled Java class package should be able
to go into main because you can always use gcj to compile those files
into native code? That would help Debian Java support, though :)

Re: scripts to download porn in Debian?

2005-01-25 Thread Kalle Kivimaa
cobaco (aka Bart Cornelis) [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes:
every parent [1] will have to go through the list of available comics,
 evaluate them and disable them.

Isn't that required in any case, if the parent wants to do content
checking? There is absolutely no guarantee that whatever grouping
scheme might be implemented by the package authors / maintainer would
correspond 1:1 with the wishes of all possible users.

Re: Bug#283578: ITP: hot-babe -- erotic graphical system activitymonitor

2004-12-01 Thread Kalle Kivimaa
Helen Faulkner [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes:
I think that is the main issue here. I would like to believe that
Debian is capable of showing more respect for other people than
including hotbabe in the distribution would indicate.

First, I'm not saying that I personally feel that hotbabe should be
part of the Debian, but I think that hotbabe demonstrates a larger
issue.

The problem is that Debian is about freedom of speech. If we start
dropping packages just because they are offensive to somebody, we are
compromising that ideal. Should we drop the Bible packages because
they are offensive to quite a few Islamists? Should we refuse to add a
Koran package as it is offensive to some Christians? Remove the
fortunes-off because it offends probably quite a large group of
people?

Yes, hotbabe is sexist (at least in it's current incarnation - if it
included a male theme then it would only be sexually offensive to
some) and as such should probably be an extra priority package. Even
though we shouldn't exclude offensive packages we have the right to
make moral judgements and try to keep the higher priorities
content-neutral.

Re: Complaint

2003-12-14 Thread Kalle Kivimaa
Ingo Juergensmann [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes:
Looking at the graphs ti seems obvious that the way how to get buildds
running again is known for about 5 days now.

You're complaining about a delay of five days in a project run by
volunteers and which has been hit very severly by a break-in? I would
start complaining about missing services after about two months (or
maybe after two weeks without no visible activity)...

Granted. It´s easier to find a solution for one buildd.
But the solution is there for 5 days now. It is known to be working and
still there is no information yet, what is changed nor what other archs can
do to speed up the restore of their buildds.

I assume that you are in a position to help DSAs and Ryan regarding
m68k-buildd. Have you asked this information directly from them (Hi,
what can I do to make your job easier regarding m68k-buildd?)? If
not, what makes you think that volunteers work better if you complain
publicly?

Yes. In both cases the informationwas given nearly instantly - and nothing
 happened yet.

So you think that the response time of DSAs should be one working day
or three days including holidays? Do you know that the DSAs are not
paid for 24/7 support?

Sorry, I just cannot take your complaint seriously.
That´s sad - for you, not for me, that you´re taking complains not serious
although there are reasons for doing so. :-(

I have to agree with Martin. If you have too much time in your hands
go and fix some RC bugs. If you are busy doing other work, fine.

So, you´re telling that only one person can fix things?

If you feel that there should be more people in the DSA group, go
ahead and suggest people who are both willing to take the job and
qualified enough to be allowed.

You excuse James as being busy with more important things and denying the
same for me? How can you know that I don´t have other important things to do

You seem to have enough free time to spend in a basically pointless
argument (publicly critising volunteers who are busy is not
productive, even if you point is otherwise valid).

How can I help to fix situation when I´m not allowed to? Or even don´t get

You cannot. You can, however, try to put yourself into a position
where you can help in the future. The choice is yours.

I already contacted Ryan for a different issue and got no response at all.
Go and figure out my motivation to ask him again.

People do have different response times regarding different things. I
may leave trivial questions lying in my mailbox for weeks whereas I
try to respond to important things immediately.

Oh, and I´m not a volunteer? Geeez... then tell me please where I can get my
money for my work for Debian!

I'm not criticising you, I'm just saying that your point is not valid,
IMO.

When someone is making a pointless contribution to this discussion, then
 it´s you.

Fortunately we don't have to worry about each other's mails.

 The hell it isn't.

True, if you try to get rid of the current volunteers, then publicly
criticising them is somewhat productive. This usually slows things
down, though, and I think that Ingo's point is that things are not
moving fast enough.
