My initial idea about how one would go about implementing them
involved very strict isolation of the builds (either with LXC or a more
heavy-handed virtualisation system). Not going to be very efficient in
the slow path, but the scope of a compromise would be a temporary
environment that's going to be thrown away in a minute or so and never
 reused.

If anyone would have actually read the PPA proposal, they would know
that uploads were and are intended to be restricted to DDs and DMs
(which can break buildds anyway, if they want) and building should
happen in throw-away chroots (not for security, but don't mess with my

Hi,

Lucas Nussbaum lu...@lucas-nussbaum.net writes:
Eh? How do you fix stuff in the next release if you don't make uploads?
I'm not saying that the number of uploads should stay the same: it's
normal to see it going down during freezes, since there are less things
to change. However, if we think that DDs participate in RC bug fixing,
the number of distinct uploaders should not go down.

Of course it should go down. People lose interest as soon as they have
cleaned up their packages and some few things they are interested
in. In a perfect world, they would re-invest their time in fixing bugs
in other packages, or uploading their great new crap to experimental -
but in a perfect world, they would also only need to work 3 hours a day
to pay for their lifestyle. It's not gonna happen.

Your argument is basically that freezing reduces the time developers
spend on Debian. However, trying to maximize developer time spent on
Debian is not the same as maximizing the quality of the resulting
product (be it a stable release, a constantly usable testing or some new
rolling/unstable-pre-2000 distribution).

What we are seeing in a freeze is what happens shortly before a release
in every software company around the world - crappy jobs noone likes
need to be done: last-minute fixes, documentation, testing, ...
The difference is that in a company, someone can force people to do what
they don't like. In Debian, we cannot do this, thus people turn
away until they can do their fun projects again. This will not magically
change. Giving in to that will mean that the last-minute fixes,
documentation and testing will not get done at all - and that's not what
I expect of Debian.

What does a best-effort basis mean? I cannot imagine a use case where this
might make sense, and I haven't found any presentation of one by you.
best-effort characterizes the way we contribute to Debian, it means
the maintainer should do its best to ensure his packages in testing are
 in a good shape.

So best-effort is only a new label for the current status, right?

Right now, a maintainer can legitimately ignore testing until freeze
because Debian does not support testing, testing is just a tool to prepare
 a release.

Who does that? Is that a relevant problem you have examples for?
Preferably related to non-fringe packages?

Who is going to install a rolling release instead of testing?
If we change our documentation to say that rolling can be used by anyone
who likes a constantly evolving distribution (and can live with the
occasionnal hiccup) and that we will do our best to support it, then the
public of testing/rolling will be larger.

Why can't we do the same for testing and have the same result?

And a larger public, in particular in that set of users who likes bleeding
edge stuff, is likely to mean more efficient testing of packages and
 possibly more contributors.

Yeah, where likely means you believe it - I don't. You seem to
believe that Debian's attractiveness is directly depending on providing
newer software - I don't.

Debian once was attractive for users because it was introducing new,
wonderful technologies to a broader user base. Proper package
management, well-tested integration of packages, the ability to automate
installations, thousands of packages, ... were features that at some
point of time were things that Debian provided and no other big
distribution did. Today, almost every other Linux distribution provides
all these features.

In the last years, Debian hasn't been able to contribute any important
feature to the F/OSS distribution world - change (leading to both good
or bad results) happens at other places (namely Ubuntu) at the moment.
I believe this has a simple, technical reason - Debian has become too
big. Every change requires a massive amount of work on thousands of
packages, interaction with hundreds of (sometimes absent) volunteers and
is thus increasingly costly. This high cost makes experiments
impossible, because backing out of a change is a waste of the scare
resources of the Debian project.

Debian is perfectly good at holding the status quo - it's a
well-integrated, stable, mostly state of the art distribution suited for
almost anything you can come up with. Trying to repaint one of the
existing bikesheds with your new rolling color will not attract the
developers (nor users) interested in making it a hip place again.

Can I get my I've successfully baited the DPL shirt, please?

I agree with your analysis above, but exactly because I agree with it, I
argue that you cannot single out big as the main cause. To disprove
that as the main cause, it would be enough to notice that some of our
derivatives are, by definition, as big as Debian is, but still can make
significant changes on top of what we offer them.

Uhm, not really. Ubuntu, as main example, is not as big as Debian (well,
that of course depends on your measure, but still...). It doesn't need
to care about the weirder architectures, and its support for non-core
packages is minimal. Our derivatives do not only extend Debian, they
also cut away (or demote to be of lesser importance) some of the
complexities that they do not want to handle.

Debian is perfectly good at holding the status quo - it's a
well-integrated, stable, mostly state of the art distribution suited for
almost anything you can come up with. Trying to repaint one of the
existing bikesheds with your new rolling color will not attract the

And how do you know that?

I don't. I believe it - it should have been worded accordingly, of course.

In fact, I'm even happy to see becoming manifest the various
disagreement and different expectations we have around testing: on such
vague aspects it's hard to have upfront agreements. But both you and
Raphael are taking guesses on the number of users / developers / effects
of a thing which does not exist yet. At this point, it can only be
speculation. You might disagree how much as you please, but there is
only one way to know who is right: build the thing.

Well, of course I would love to see how Raphael does a
rolling.debian.net archive and proves me wrong here - but I don't have
the impression that this is what's supposed to happen here.
In his blog, he presented a GR draft that wants to rename the existing
testing suite to rolling. In this thread, he furthermore explained
that he wants that rolling is governed by a different policy than
testing.
This would replace a core part of the current development model and
doing that on the unfounded belief that this will attract new users and
contributors is something I want to avoid.

 1/ you can't request bin-nmus of reverse-dependencies in experimental

that's one of the main task in preparing the transition)
2/ you have to manually reupload a new source package to unstable with all
the delay it induces for getting the package built on all arches
Besides, you might have to version build-dependencies so that they are
taken from experimental. Worse, you might have to expand all transitive
build-dependencies and version them so that they are taken from
experimental (sbuild prefers to fail instead of installing from
experimental unless the versioned build-dependency is explicit).

That's simply not the case anymore.

This is too impractical with OCaml, for example: it is impossible to
make a transition in experimental without an insane amount of work,
whereas recompiling all involved packages takes only a few hours (on
 amd64).

But in the last OCaml transition, quite a few problems were caused by
packages failing to build on !amd64, so rebuilding them only there
doesn't really help to find problem.

To resolve the problems I suggest to serialize transitions in sid.

This was already discussed a few times.

First the archive should block package uploads to sid that would be
starting a new transition (defining this in more details is left for
 later).

No, this can't be defined later. It's a central part. Would any new
binary lead to a dedicated overlay? How do you determine when this is
needed and when not?

Instead transitions should be managed in dedicated repositories
that are overlays over sid. We would have tools (command-line, web
interface, etc.) to manage the transition in that repository.

What would these tools do? Why don't they exist currently?

We could tell which packages need to be rebuilt (bin-NMU, sourceful upload)
and the system would automatically rebuild the package (and it
would also be automatically rebuilt every time that the package is updated
 in sid).

How do you determine the set of packages that need to be transitioned?
Are these provided by the uploader? Can they be computed?

Some web interface would display the status of the transition,
displaying which package/arch have been built or not, and which one failed
 to build from source.

You mean like the existing pages on buildd.debian.org? You just need to
feed them the list of affected packages to get that.

Multiple transitions will still end up mixed in sid if you push them
before packages have migrated to testing but they are all already
completed and you only have to deal with RC bugs and delays to ensure
 package can migrate to testing.

Only deal with RC bugs? This touches an interesting point you didn't
cover at all: How are bugs reported? How can these bugs be tracked if
the same source version is fine in sid, but breaks in an overlay - or,
worse, breaks in one overlay, but not in another?

Dealing with transitions that way make it clear that the maintainer has to
take the responsibility to prepare/complete the transition if he wants to
see his package in sid and in the next release.

I assumed that this was already the case. I also don't see how enforcing
such a technical system would solve this problem?

Preparing the transition in experimental is not always done and takes
much more energy than such a system would take.

Why, actually?

How does that sound to you?

Trying to improve the handling of transitions is a good thing. I don't
consider your mail to be a proposal, as it doesn't cover any of the
actual technical problems.

Another interesting question: Do you plan to implement this? Do you
expect someone else to do it? Why weren't the tools you hinted at
never implemented for transition handling in sid?

And, seeing the not ending discussions about your handling of the new
dpkg source formats: Do you think that such a change could be
implemented without pissing off so many people?

 Great!
Does this mean that #541342 can be closed?

Yep. It also means that we now use the in-chroot dpkg instead of the

Well, it really depends *which* bug you consider, see for instance [1].

As Alexander pointed out in his blog post, we have made the experience
that not being optimistic helps when trying to avoid too long freeze
periods. A more pessimistic view of the current count shows ~475 open
bugs at the moment, since there have been some mass bug filings in the
past week...

Work towards fixing these bugs is greatly appreciated. We will use our
release superpowers to aggressively remove leaf packages from testing
(in fact, another round of removals happened on the weekend).
What's the current policy about NMUs, then?
That's a good question, but also not-a-problem. Current *legacy*
guidelines (i.e. non-overridden by the Release Team) already allows you
to do very quick DELAYED/2 NMUs for RC bugs which have been outstanding
for a while [2]. I've been doing that for a while now, and IME it is
 generally welcome by maintainers [3].

Thanks for your work. That's pretty much what the release team is asking
people to do at the moment: Fix your own bugs, then check what you can
do for packages you use, providing patches and/or NMUing if the
maintainer can't do an upload. We are also more than happy to get
pointed to good removal candidates or RC bug fixes that might be kicked
into transitioning to testing.

Thanks for your help,

Re: State of developers-reference

2009-09-09 Thread Marc 'HE' Brockschmidt
Heya,

As I'm one of the people who have at some point volunteered to help with
the dev-ref, but mostly failed to actually do work, I guess I could say
a few words, without any pretense of actually knowing better than all
the other people who have already commented...

Lucas Nussbaum lu...@lucas-nussbaum.net writes:
OK, let's try to change the way it is maintained by moving to something
similar to policy. Several questions need to be addressed.

 - Where should discussions occur? Should we re-use debian-policy@, since
both documents are a bit related? Or use another list? I would
personally prefer to use another list (-policy@ is already quite
busy), but I could be convinced to use -pol...@.

I think moving discussions to -policy is a good idea, as these
discussion sometimes decide whether a specific change is implemented in
policy or dev-ref.

Developers Reference gathers several kinds of information:

 (A) Purely informational documentation of Debian infrastructure and
 procedures.
This is the easiest kind of content. Once correctness has been verified,
not much debate can happen about the information.

Should such information actually be part of the developers reference?
It seems this could easily be moved onto www. or wiki.debian.org.

 (B) Best practices about Debian packaging
This is harder to handle, but it isn't normative: maintainers are free
to do things differently: besides raising a few eyebrows, nothing will
happen. If something about developers-reference sounds normative, it's
a mistake and should be moved to debian-policy.

 (C) Policy-like information about some procedures
This is the hardest part. The developers-reference documents some
processes that are not standardized by Debian policy, because they are
not related to Debian packaging. An example of such processes is the NMU
procedure. Not following those procedures correctly is likely to result in
 complaints from other maintainers.

I've checked the current dev-ref and had quite a few problems to decide
to which of the two categories the current content belongs. Handling
(B) like (C) seems not too problematic. If (A) is moved out of dev-ref,
this would give a simple, coherent change process completly analogous to
policy.

As we know that the security team's manpower is limited, we acknowledge

which of the old architectures can't be supported from a release team

Including kFreeBSD architectures in the release has been in discussion

Orphaning some perl packages

2008-12-27 Thread Marc 'HE' Brockschmidt
retitle 456924 O: libgstreamer-perl -- Perl interface to the gstreamer
noowner 456924
thanks

Heya,

In my quest to get rid of tasks I don't have the motivation to actually
work on, I want to give up some of my packages. Basically, there are
three groups: Packages that are just fine and need a maintainer,
packages that are just fine and should probably go to the perl group and
packages that should probably be removed. I've marked the packages
accordingly in the following list. Whatever doesn't get picked up here
will get an O/RM bug in a few weeks (that is, whenever I think about
this again):

* libtest-number-delta-perl
  libx11-freedesktop-desktopentry-perl
  libexporter-tidy-perl
  libextutils-depends-perl
  libextutils-pkgconfig-perl
Misc perl libs. Should probably go to the perl group.

* libcairo-perl*
  libglib-perl*
  libgnome2-canvas-perl
  libgnome2-gconf-perl*
  libgnome2-perl*
  libgnome2-print-perl*
  libgnome2-vfs-perl*
  libgnome2-wnck-perl*
  libgtk2-ex-podviewer-perl
  libgtk2-gladexml-perl*
  libgtk2-html2-perl
  libgtk2-perl*
  libgtk2-spell-perl
  libgtk2-trayicon-perl
  libgtk2-traymanager-perl
Perl bindings for some common Gtk/Gnome libraries. Upstream is
active, updates packages and fixes issues. Maintaining these packages
is easy, if a bit boring. Perl group material, I guess. At the
moment, some of these (the ones with a *) are maintained by the
Gtk2-Perl Maintainers (active members: 0.2, and that's me).

libgtk2-spell-perl and libgtk2-html2-perl could also be removed from
the archive. The rest is of good quality and used.

* odot
Small todo application based on Gtk2-Perl. Could also be removed, I
   guess.

* libgstreamer-perl
Already orphaned in my last drive, someone offered to pick it up, but
never acted on it. So it's on the list, once again.

* libenv-ps1-perl
  libterm-readline-zoid-perl
  zoidberg
Yet another dead perl shell and support libs. Removal candidate
unless someone is really interested (to also take over upstream
   development)

The few other packages I still have can stay with me, I think. I need
them and noone else would be interested in maintaining them, s :-)

Thanks,
Marc

How is the fact that a package is in experimental a factor when
determining the bug severity? The BTS has version tracking, so it really
doesn't hurt to file as many RC bugs on an experimental version as you
like.

Re: Bug reports of DFSG violations are tagged ‘lenny-ignore’?

2008-10-20 Thread Marc 'HE' Brockschmidt
Ben Finney [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes:
Have I missed some announcement that DFSG violations don't matter for
 the release of ‘lenny’?

No, because they generally matter.

I ask because a whole lot of bug reports of DFSG violations have been
 tagged ‘lenny-ignore’ without explanation:
[...]
 and probably others I've missed.

The full list of bugs tagged lenny-ignore is available here:
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/pkgreport.cgi?tag=lenny-ignore

 Should these tags be removed?

No.

I would think at least a meaningful justification in the bug report is
 required

Well, apply common sense. In all of the bugs I recently tagged, the DFSG
violation is usually a formal problem, something that other
distributions and upstream don't consider a problem at all. While fixing
these issues is and should be a goal of Debian, it's hardly something
that can be done in the last few weeks before releasing. The drawbacks
of delaying the release indefinitely for these bugs are much greater
than releasing with these minor DFSG violations [1].

FWIW, this has also been done for past releases (see, for example,
#211765).

Marc

Footnotes:
[1] Yeah, I'm waiting to get toasted for daring to say minor here.

I do not accept to be called names because I firmly believe that
Debian's goal is to distribute the best possible free software to our

software we integrate, test and improve.

I believe what you want to say is I'm willing to pick up all the work
of the release team before you start insulting the people who invest a

I'm assuming there are records of unblocks beyond the mailing list
 archive?

The release team's hint files are available:
http://ftp-master.debian.org/testing/hints/

In this case:
testing/hints/luk:unblock gossip/1:0.31-1

We move hints that were done down (under the finished line) for
archiving purposes.

How did gossip migrate with Build-Depends on a version of
libloudmouth1-0 that still does not exist in Lenny?

britney does not, and never has, check build-dependencies.

and one a month old,

An upstream contributor promised to fix it and I'm waiting for a patch to
test the fix.
There is a workaround and the RC bug could be downgraded to important.

No. Having a workaround in the bug log is not something that changes the
severity of the bug. Please do not adopt more packages. Thanks.

The previous discussions has lead nowhere. No use in discussing it yet
again, instead it's time to act!

Put down that crack pipe. Now.

I offer to fix up all packages to exim4 | mail-transport-agent *and*
when there is a working default-mta proposal and a need for changing the
actual default mta fix it up in every package.

Nice offer, but please let these packages alone. Your changes wouldn't end
up in lenny anyway, so we do have enough time to discuss a proper
solution and implement it.

not-for-us needs to be set manually.

Maybe it should be mandatory to always have a transition package for
packages which are being removed from the archives? For example, when
package X_0.1 is to be removed from the archive, there has to be a
transition to a package X-obsoleted_0.1 (which is in fact the same as
 X_0.1).

That would force us to keep the packages in the next release.

Handling of removed packages

2008-05-29 Thread Marc 'HE' Brockschmidt
Heya,

For some time now, I have been thinking about the problem of packages
which are removed from the archive at some point, without an (enforced)
transition to a new package name. Users of such packages keep them
around, usually never noticing the fact that no security (or other)
support is available anymore.

Our current package management doesn't handle this case at all, so we
might need to fix this - we just need to decide how. The probably
easiest way would be to make apt whine on all packages that are not
available in any version at one of the locations specified in
sources.list. This trivial solution sucks, because locally created
packages [1] also fall in this category. So, has anyone a good idea
solving this problem, without needing to keepr masses of status/diff/bla
files around?

Marc

Footnotes:

available in the archive, local configuration packages, ...

I usually run 'apt-show-versions | grep -v uptodate' to find them. The
remaining list is short enough to be analyzed manually.

I don't think normal users do that - and users shouldn't expect to
install Priority: optional packages to get a list of things that are not
supported anymore by their distribution.

Why not? IOW, why shouldn't normal users be expected to expend a
little effort to maintain their system?

Because this task can easily be automated. Forcing people to do things
manually that should be done by the package management sucks.

Re: broken .orig.tar.gz (Re: package upload rejected - no email)

2008-03-16 Thread Marc 'HE' Brockschmidt
Bernhard R. Link [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes:
 * Steve Langasek [EMAIL PROTECTED] [080315 21:12]:
 $ cat /srv/ftp.debian.org/queue/reject/rhinote_0.7.0-2_i386.reason
Rejected: md5sum and/or size mismatch on existing copy of
 rhinote_0.7.0.orig.tar.gz.
Rejected: can not overwrite existing copy of 'rhinote_0.7.0.orig.tar.gz'
 already in the archive.
Looking at the file currently in unstable:
 |$ tar -tvvzf ../rhinote_0.7.0.orig.tar.gz | head -n1
 |drwxr-xr-x kiyuko/kiyuko 0 2006-03-24 02:15 rhinote-0.7.0.orig/

So the original file looks repackaged without any reason (and not
comment about this in the the rhinote_0.7.0-1.diff.gz).

How could this happen? This is a classic error and three people seem
to not have noticed it. The maintainer is no DD, so I won't blame him.
But is there a way to know who the sponsor of rhinote_0.7.0-1 was?
