Here's what you must do to make sasl usable with smtp/smmsp:
+ chown smmta:smmsp /etc/sasldb2 (problematic if used by others)
+ dpkg-statoverride --remove /var/run/saslauthd
+ dpkg-statoverride --add root sasl 711 /var/run/saslauthd
