Please see http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=460689 and let me know if I'm missing something. Basically, when sort is run on a file with really long lines there are some mmaps that fail with ENOMEM, and the program segfaults. But AFAIK, the mmaps are happening within the strcoll(3) function, and there's nothing sort can do about this. Is that true?
