Package: libc6
Version: 2.6.1-1+b1
Severity: normal

The whole point of the -o option, it seems to me, is to allow
    iconv foo -o foo
to work correctly, the way it does for sort(1).
Otherwise,
    iconv foo > bar
would be sufficient.

Package: glibc
Version: 2.9-1

This seems to be the same as upstream bug #5903[1], which has been fixed
in glibc 2.9. Currently I don't have glibc 2.9 at hand, but I have
verified that "iconv foo -o foo" works as desired in Debian 6 and later.
