My experiences with the new hurd installation cds

2012-06-16 Thread peter
First of all, i'm really happy that you are doing this and really greatful
for all the work you put into making the hurd run!

I have just tried the new dvd.iso on real hardware and these are some of
the things i encountered.

1.) The installation still won't go through unless you select English -
United states for language and locale.

2.) Partitioning still fails to recognize the size and present file
systems on my harddrive. It lists my 300gb harddrive as 137.9gb and does
not list the existing file systems or operating systems. So for a
sucessful install your other operating systems will get wiped while
partitioning the drive.

3.) My previously working network interface is not detected anymore thus i
have no networking. lspci output:

Via Technologies, inc. VT6105/VT610GS [Rhine-III] (rev 86)

Hope this helps in some way and if you have any questions or require some
log files and such don't hesitate to ask!

/Peter

Re: My experiences with the new hurd installation cds

2012-06-16 Thread peter
Thanks for the quick reply!

1.) The locale i'm using at the moment is english - united states. The
locale i use doesn't really matter since the swedish keyboard layout
doesn't work in console anyway (as for system language i prefer english).
So it's not a big issue, just thought you'd like to konow.

2.) Okay, no probs. Hopefully i wont have to re-install to often.

3.) Output of lspci -n

03:00.0 0200: 1106:3106 (rev 86)

Hope that helps!

Which locale are you using? Things just go completely right in french.

2.) Partitioning still fails to recognize the size and present file

That's not surprising: the linux drivers in gnumach is lba28 only, which
 is exactly 137GB.

Please also post lspci -n. It seems I've forgotten to add CONFIG_* from
 netdde compilation.

Ok, drivers for this one are not included due to some missing feature in

And more generally, sorting out, in netdde's Makefile, which drivers are
ok to disable (e.g. because it's non-x86 hardware), and which drivers
we should work on supporting, that'd be helpful too. No real technical
knowledge needed here, just need to check what a driver is good for,
by e.g. looking in linux/drivers/net/Makefile for the corresponding
CONFIG_* item, and then read in linux/drivers/net/Kconfig such the
description and dependencies on non-x86 archs.

 how so?

I wish i could tell you. If there is some way i can get logs from the
installation or see console output i'd be happy to provide you the
details.
At this point the computer just restarts, thats all information i have.
The installer seems flaky in some ways. Sometimes it just stalls (again i
wish i could give you some logs and information but i don't know how to
access them). If i try the installation again it runs through without
problems. Once installed the system is rock solid though.

It just works for me without a glitch.

3.) Ok, so the networking should work, as long as you use supported

 Well, yes, of course :)
It however seems that via-rhine now builds fine.

Thats good news. I tried the three network cards i had laying around and
none worked. But i'll stick to the Netgear i'm using at the moment as it
seems to work better than the d-link i previously used. For one it gets a
dhcp adress with the older images.

I could have a look at the netdde makefile and see if i can help out
there. But don't count on anything. I have used linux for 13 years now and
i have at least picked picked up something. I can read c/c++ code and have
a basic understanding on how it works but i couldn't write a single line
of code on my own.
I'm trying my best to get my brother onboard though. And he has programmed
a lot of linux stuff from kernel modules to... Well, basically anything.

python-psutil patch failing test suite

2012-06-16 Thread Barry deFreese
Hi again,

Here is another patch that I could use some help with. I was essentially
trying to cheat by just
using the posix files. It does allow the package to build, however it fails
the test suites because
_EXTRA_ALL isn't defined.

I was going to copy the _pslinux and _psutil_linux files to something like
_psgnu and _psutil_gnu.
However, the linux code relies a lot on /proc and uses /proc/cpuinfo which we
don't have.

The other option would be to try to use the _psbsd and _psutil_bsd files.

I am open to suggestions or help..

Thanks!

Barry deFreese
