I have the same exact setup, and the same exact problem. I think it's actually XFree86 that's having the trouble. It only happens to me if I move the mouse around right after switching the KVM to the linux machine (i.e., while it's coming up on the screen). If I wait it's fine. If it does

That's very helpful to know -- thanks! Now I'm in the midst of setting up alsa to see how that works. I have i810 onboard sound, and OSS isn't quite working right with it. I'll mess with mplayer when I'm done. I did hack kmplayer to run mplayer through artsdsp, and it worked, btw. ;-)
