Your post game me some ideas, and I tried to run Kcalc as root and it worked[1]
just fine. So it looks like KDE is simply preventing some apps to be run as
root yet allowing others. What can I say... I wish the error message would've
been phrased better, at least giving the user some ideas as to what is
happening instead of generic "KDEInit could not launch...".

--key super-user-command su" as it was suggested by yaros

Thanks. That's pretty much what I did.

It looks like you are referring to two specific programs, Dolphin and Kate.

Dolphin can be run (again) as root (with su, not sudo) since 18.08.0
(currently in testing) with big warning, waiting for the feature which will
allow users to browse all files even without running the whole program as root.

Kate can't run directly as root, but there is a way to edit files a root:

I can run applications as a root in buster. I have some applications launchers
(partitionmanager, luckybacku) with checked option "Run as a different user"
root and it works...

More info: I can open Konsole, run "su - root" and switch to root user without
any issues. Also, I appreciate all the suggestions but my original questions
have never been answered:

Has anyone been able to run an app, any app, as root in Buster KDE? If yes, how
do you do it?

Thanks

Do you have kdesu in location from error message
(/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libexec/kf5/)? Is it executable?

Yes, I have them all installed. Basically, I have installed kde-standard with

I've already had them installed:

# aptitude search  kde-cli-tools
i A kde-cli-tools
  - tools to use KDE services from the
command line

i A kde-cli-tools-data
  - tools to use kioslaves from the command
line

Now when I try to run Kwrite as root (just for test purposes) it no longer
hangs but immediately fails with the following error message:

   KDEInit could not launch '/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libexec/kf5/kdesu'

Thanks

Hi,

Try this (command as user, not root):

kwriteconfig5 --file kdesurc --group super-user-command --key
super-user-command su

That makes su default super user command instead sudo. (source:
