As advised in the xz man page:
When writing scripts that need to decompress files, it is recommended to
always use the name xz with appropriate arguments (xz -d or xz -dc)
instead of the names unxz and xzcat.

The issue seem to be still present in 4.9.110-1 but I have trouble to
reproduce it on a sid system running 4.17.8-1. So this might give us
some indication on a possible fix.
