I just tried to boot the original squeeze kernel (2.6.32) in recovery
mode (kernel commandline argument single). Single mode makes no
difference, it hangs with 6 vcpus at the same place. Here is a
screenshot where it hangs:

I have CentOS 6.3 installed as the host OS on a server with dual Xeon CPU's.
CentOS was installed a week ago fresh, no unofficial packages are installed.
CentOS is up-to-date. Kernel is the stock kernel:
