I have downloaded and replaced /lib/firmware/iwlwifi-3945-1.ucode with
the one in the tgz all working now

sorry about delay looks like the first one was dropped as spam
my workaround set sata ports as port0 and 1 not ide pri master and slave
caused an issue
the box is this configuration will only boot from CDROM
the sata disks on port 0 and 1 dont seem to register as HDD's for bios
boot devices :(
I have found a work around for this issue. I don't think this is a final
fix as I think there is still a bug causing this behavior with the
default settings. it could point you in the correct direction.
The BIOS setting called onchip sata was set to Auto (the default)
this mapped sata port 0 to

it does not work under 2.6.16 using ide-cd.
ide-scsi did support it but is no longer provided as a module in the stock
debian package
