I have this problem, I fixed it running fold...@home with nice 19
instead of SCHED_IDLE, the same should be possible for BOINC.
Maybe this is related (or the same) to bug #517449.

Just wanted to say that i'm getting similar issue with both radeon and
radeonhd drivers on xen-enabled amd64 kernel.
Other machine with nvidia card and nv driver on x86 xen-enabled kernel
doesn't experience such defect. So probably it's ati-specific.
