Bug#976284: linux-image-5.9.0-4-amd64: kernel oops when handling small 32GB usb drives

2020-12-02 Thread ael
Package: src:linux
Version: 5.9.11-1
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

I checked dmesg after mounting a couple of new usb sticks and found a few
oops apparently associated with task sync.

I will attach the dmesg (gzipped) if reportbug does not do that
automatially.

Thanks for bringing this up.

Do we have any numbers for where xz resides in terms of
decompression speed? Is it enough to just decompress the
files in userspace for getting numbers, or is the kernel doing
something special™ to be kept in mind?

JFTR, some further numbers regarding file sizes:

Bug#976258: linux: hibernation attempt results in shutdown and unclean filesystem

2020-12-02 Thread Thorsten Glaser
Package: src:linux
Version: 5.9.9-1
Severity: critical
Justification: causes serious data loss
X-Debbugs-Cc:
t...@mirbsd.de,reply+aagshfu5klm2qb2dozdxppf5z5jydevbnhhcvex...@reply.github.com

A bit of backstory, since this is not the first place I had to
report this to (feels like being sent from Pontius to Pilatus):

I’ve switched from consolekit to elogind once it became usable.

I accidentally hit Fn-F12 on a Thinkad X61, causing elogind to
attempt “hibernation” (sudpend to disc): Debian #971644

My system is not set up for hibernation as the swap space is
*much* smaller than the memory size, and no HIBERFIL.SYS is
set up. I do not use hibernation, nor do I want it.

The problem here is that, even if hibernation fails, the system
powers off but the filesystem is not in a clean state (as can be
seen easily from the e2fsck messages upon next powerup). This can
cause serious user data loss. I expect that a hibernation failure
will cause a message in syslog and otherwise the system to con‐
tinue working as normally, or at worst, a clean(!) shutdown (but
with still a message in syslog as to allow diagnosis).

I believe I’ve since figured out how to disable this in elogind.
From this, it might also affect systemd-based installations. I
might switch to no logind again…

In https://github.com/elogind/elogind/issues/177 the elogind upstream
maintainer asked me to do this:

# echo /dev/sda2 >/sys/power/resume
# cat /sys/power/resume
8:2
# echo platform >/sys/power/disk
# cat /sys/power/disk
[platform] shutdown reboot suspend test_resume
# echo disk >/sys/power/state

This indeed crashed my system just the same. The elogind maintainer
insists that “elogind has absolutely nothing to do with it.”

So this is probably a kernel issue.
