Bug#345592: linux-image-2.6.14-2-k7: pwc module doesn't work

It works with linux-image-2.6.14-1-k7, where it is supplied as a
 separate package.

It works also, but the uncompression has been moved out of the kernel driver,
into an hypothetical userland. That said, userland apps have not adapted to
it, nor has any userland way of uncompressing it surfaced in any way.

That said, the third-party old-pwc module is still there, and needs just to be
rebuilt against the 2.6.14-2 abi, and it will do the proper diversion or
whatever of the pwc module and work well, so i believe what you see is a pwc
external driver package bug which has not yet been rebuild against the new
ABI.

Friendly,

Sven Luther

I just installed 2.6.14 (from backports) and it appears that all the
problems are fixed. I would close this bug, but I don't know how to do
it properly so the version tracking and such works.

Dear Georg!

Could you please retest with a current kernel (testing:2.6.12,
unstable:2.6.14) and a current udev (= 0.076).

Using initramfs-tools for creating the initrd is probably a good idea too.

Thanks for your time and work, David

  Hello,

I would like to get on with the preparations of 2.6.15-rc7 and
schedule an upload to experimental for tomorrow evening UTC.

m68k is unable to keep up with that schedule, partly because I went on
vacation, and partly because my upstream is still at 2.6.14 and I am not
going to duplicate the work that is going to happen eventually in linux-m68k
CVS, if somebody else wants to do that, fine with me. I tried to hack up
something quick, but I am either getting a diff that does not apply, or a
huge diff, that does not compile. This will have to wait until our CVS is at
2.6.15, which usually never happens before the new version is released.
Even when that is done, I need to work on the config. The last version I
tried on my Amiga (2.6.12) did not quite boot, since it did not load the
SCSI drivers, it did detect the IDE devices though. I assume both SCSI and
IDE drivers are built as modules and live in the initrd? Maybe this is only
a minor problem on m68k then.

Oh, and yes, this means the kernel now build-depend on ocaml-interp

Oh, was this really necessary? 32MB wasted for ocaml and friends. Does ocaml
even work on m68k? I only remember having lots of problems with it...

Bug#345592: linux-image-2.6.14-2-k7: pwc module doesn't work

2006-01-02 Thread Srdjan

Hi Sven,

I'm not sure what is the pwc external driver package - I haven't
installed anything apart from the kernel in case of 2.6.14-2 and
additional modules for 2.6.14-1. Can you please tell me where do I find
old-pwc module that I can use meanwhile?

Also, do we need to reassign this bug to someone else then?

Cheers,
Srdjan

It works with linux-image-2.6.14-1-k7, where it is supplied as a
separate package.

It works also, but the uncompression has been moved out of the kernel driver,
into an hypothetical userland. That said, userland apps have not adapted to
it, nor has any userland way of uncompressing it surfaced in any way.

That said, the third-party old-pwc module is still there, and needs just to be
rebuilt against the 2.6.14-2 abi, and it will do the proper diversion or
whatever of the pwc module and work well, so i believe what you see is a pwc
external driver package bug which has not yet been rebuild against the new
ABI.

zaptel module compilation

2006-01-02 Thread Kilian Krause
Hi Kernel team,

I'm trying to resolve #343521 and I found that the linux-headers ship
with a file .extraversion instead of providing EXTRAVERSION in the
according Makefile.

Now, my question is which part of the chain should be fixed accordingly.
Right now zaptel-source uses KVERS as it's being provided by
module-assistant. Module-assistant itself gathers its knowledge from the
kernel Makefile. Thus, for e.g. a linux-2.6.14-2-686-smp the KVERS is
linux-2.6.14 as correctly found in the bug report. So, could please
maybe someone point me to whether sourcing the .extraversion is the sane
approach or where I am to redirect this?

Thanks for your help.

m68k is unable to keep up with that schedule, partly because I went on
vacation, and partly because my upstream is still at 2.6.14 and I am not

I know, and the idea is to have all other arches ready, and then have m68k
come in in -2 or something, same as we did with 2.6.14, which i believe was
fine with you.

going to duplicate the work that is going to happen eventually in linux-m68k
CVS, if somebody else wants to do that, fine with me. I tried to hack up
something quick, but I am either getting a diff that does not apply, or a
huge diff, that does not compile. This will have to wait until our CVS is at
2.6.15, which usually never happens before the new version is released.

I know, which is why we make allowance for m68k :)

Ah, working on the configs is important indeed, but you need t owork with
yaird initramfs-tools also.

This is important, because we want to

Oh, and yes, this means the kernel now build-depend on ocaml-interp

Oh, was this really necessary? 32MB wasted for ocaml and friends. Does ocaml

This is only ocaml-interp, which depends on ocaml-base-nox, and that's it, it
will represent at worst around 1MB only, and ...

even work on m68k? I only remember having lots of problems with it...

... if i remember your problem well, they would not have happened in this
case, as they affected the full blown ocaml packages, and they should be fixed
anyway.

If it was necessary, well, it never is, but i am going to implement over time
a full blown split-config that actually works as it should, and i prefer to do
it in a language i master well, and which makes it easy to do this (handle
easily list and trees, ocaml is the best suited for that).

Indeed. you should clone it and assign it to your userland tool so it provide
uncompression, and maybe to the pwc package so it will build against the
newest API.

This is probably the now infamous ide-generic bug. what version of yaird or

Please try the upcoming 2.6.15 kernels which will be uploaded hopefully today.
