Bug#524012: et131x-modules-2.6.26-1-amd64: no outgoing network packages on et131x-interface

2009-04-14 Thread Dirk Rieger
Package: et131x-modules-2.6.26-1-amd64
Severity: important

installed the amd64-version of this package on 2 different amd-systems with
debian-lenny installed.
I can see incoming and outgoing packages via tcpdump but the outgoing packages
doesn't reach the network.
I changed one system to 686-kernel and equivalent et131x-module and it works as
it should.

Bug#523942: linux-image-2.6.26-2-s390 will not boot!

2009-04-14 Thread STEPHEN POWELL
Can you boot the old kernel and unpack the initramfs to see if the
needed modules got added? See the DEBUG section of initramfs-tools(8)
for a command to do the unpacking.

As you know, the initial RAM file system is not included with the kernel
image package but is built dynamically during kernel image installation.
Furthermore, update-initramfs only keeps one backup copy per kernel image,
and I have played around with several iterations of building initial RAM
file system images; so the original one built during initial kernel
installation is no longer available. But none of my subsequent initial
RAM file system builds works either. I can verify that all of them did
include the three dasd modules (dasd_mod, dasd_eckd_mod, and dasd_diag_mod).

I issued the following command:

update-initramfs -uvvk 2.6.26-2-s390 update-initramfs.log5

Here is the contents of update-initramfs.log5:

Bug#523942: linux-image-2.6.26-2-s390 will not boot!

2009-04-14 Thread STEPHEN POWELL
I just tried re-building the initial RAM file system for the 2.6.26-1-s390
kernel image, rerunning zipl, and rebooting.
It came up fine. It does not appear to be a problem with the build process for
the initial RAM file system.
If it is, it is a build problem which is specific to the new kernel image for
some reason.

Bug#523942: linux-image-2.6.26-2-s390 will not boot!

2009-04-14 Thread STEPHEN POWELL
By the way, I have another server that runs the 64-bit version of the kernel
image (linux-image-2.6.26-2-s390x), and it works fine.
Either the bug affects only the 31-bit version of the kernel, or there is an
environmental difference of some kind.

Bug#523942: linux-image-2.6.26-2-s390 will not boot!

2009-04-14 Thread STEPHEN POWELL
I have found an environmental difference between the two servers, one of which
runs linux-image-2.6.26-2-s390x (and will boot)
and the other of which runs linux-image-2.6.26-2-s390 (and will not boot). The
s390x server has only one virtual CPU.
The s390 server has two virtual CPUs. I changed the s390 version to have only
one virtual CPU and tried again. This time it
fails in a different way. With two virtual CPUs I get a kernel panic and the
virtual machine loads a disabled wait PSW.
With one virtual CPU the kernel goes into an infinite loop. The last message
written to the console prior to the loop is

NET: Registered protocol family 17

During the infinite loop the kernel produces no messages. The loop was
detected by monitoring software on z/VM.
Of course it should work with 1 or 2 virtual CPUs, since the kernel has SMP
support. But it doesn't work with either.
It does fail differently, however, between the two scenarios.
linux-image-2.6.26-1-s390 continues to work fine.
The s390 server has MACH XA in its CP directory entry. The s390x server has
MACH ESA in its CP directory
entry. If I change the s390 server to use MACH ESA, like the s390x server,
it goes back to the original mode of
failure (kernel panic, disabled wait) even with only one virtual CPU.

Package: fglrx-modules-2.6-686
Version: 2:2.6.26-2
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

The version of the ATI driver in fglrx-driver is 8.58.2, but in the kernel
module it is 8.56.4.
This is revealed in the Xorg log.

In a single monitor set-up, this just causes hardware acceleration to be
dropped. However, on my
dual-monitor system it freezes the kernel the instant X starts: no response
from any kind of
keyboard input, not even VT switching, and no response to pings from another
machine. The only way
out is a forced reboot using the reset button. This is 100% repeatable, too.

I was able to get the flgrx driver to run without crashing the kernel by
removing the
dual-monitor-specific parts of my xorg.conf. That was how I was able to look at
the Xorg log,
which otherwise was being lost due to the lack of a disk sync before the kernel
crash.

I solved this by using module-assistant to build a module from fglrx-source, so
I assume a rebuild
of fglrx-modules-2.6-686 would achieve the same result.

However, it would be good if this situation didn't completely crash the system
when it happens
again (as it surely will -- it's happened to me at various times in the past).
I don't know if
this is an ATI bug or a Debian bug, and whether it is in fglrx-driver or
fglrx-source. I will
happily make another bug report if you can tell me where.

Bug#524125: apt-get installing virtualbox-ose-modules-2.6.26-2-amd64 makes my internet stop working!

2009-04-14 Thread Deniz Akcal
Package: virtualbox-ose-modules-2.6.26-2-amd64
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

Whenever I install virtualbox-ose-modules-2.6.26-2-amd64 and then reboot my
computer, network-manager-gnome says Wired Network Connection with a
self-assigned address when I hover the cursor over it. This does not allow me
to have any access to any network! I must apt-get remove --purge
virtualbox-ose-modules-2.6.26-2-amd64 and then reboot in order to not have this
problem and be able to browse the internet etc.

Having virtualbox-ose-modules-2.6.26-1-amd64 or even virtualbox-ose itself
doesn't cause this problem but virtualbox-ose-modules-2.6.26-2-amd64
does! The reason why I chose the severity grave is because; unless I boot the
2.6.26-1-amd64 kernel (instead of the 2.6.26-2-amd64 kernel) with
the virtualbox-ose-modules-2.6.26-1-amd64 package, I cannot get virtualbox-ose
running with functional internet at all!

Bug#524142: linux-image-2.6.29-1-686: CIFS VFS ignores port mount option

2009-04-14 Thread Nicholas Perez
Package: linux-image-2.6.29-1-686
Version: 2.6.29-2
Severity: normal

When passing the port option to mount.cifs (so that I may redirect my
mount to use the SSH tunnel for example), it is ignored. The option is
properly parsed, but it has no effect what so ever in the code. See the
following for my little bit of research into this:

First setup netcat to listen locally for the CIFS connection:
nicho...@eeepc:~$ sudo netcat -l -p 445

Then attempt a mount with the port option set completely differently:
nicho...@eeepc:~$ sudo mount -t cifs -o port=65100 //localhost/external
/home/nicholas/test --verbose
parsing options: rw,port=65100
Password:

mount.cifs kernel mount options
unc=//localhost\external,user=root,pass=,ver=1,rw,port=65100
mount error(112): Host is down
Refer to the mount.cifs(8) manual page (e.g. man mount.cifs)

See the output from netcat:
MBr+LM1.2X002LANMAN2.1NT LM 0.12POSIX 2

As you can see, the connection happened to the default port of 445
rather than the 65100 port that was specified. If I supply an IP address
the same thing happens.
