Bug#573189: linux-image-2.6.33-2-686: aufs does not work in 2.6.33

In 2.3.33 aufs does not work and it is not mentioned in the config file,
not even as disabled.

This means debian-live cannot boot from 2.6.33.

This is a regression since 2.6.32 which included in-kernel aufs.

aufs is a dirty hack and we will not support it beyond squeeze. Valerie
Aurora is working on union mounts which should go upstream in time for
squeeze+1.

This means no live CDs for testing KMS and other new stuff that might
pop up eventually.

Oh well.

Hope that the new union fs solution goes well and lasts a bit longer ;-)

Thanks

Michal

There is one argument you missed: consistency with new installations,
which do use UUIDs. So I will consider doing this now, but it's quite a
  lot of work.

Well, I've now done the work and committed it to svn. You can test it
now if you want ('make -f debian/rules.real install-linux-base' will
build just that one binary) or wait for the next experimental upload.

Thanks! I'll try the experimental upload as soon as it appears.

By the way, in trying to convert things over to UUIDs, you might want to
take a look at uswsusp; see bug 572729.

Bug#573189: linux-image-2.6.33-2-686: aufs does not work in 2.6.33

2010-03-10 Thread Daniel Baumann

severity 573189 important
thanks

Hi,

as we discussed last time, unionfs-fuse is not acceptable.

until unionmount is available in upstream, the debian kernels need to
have aufs2.

either, the kernel team is going to keep applying the aufs2 patches for
the kernel =2.6.32, or, we need aufs oot modules back in the archive.

If your intention is to no longer include aufs2 within the debian kernel
images itself (which i'm quite surpised, because it was clearly said
when linux-modules-extra-2.6 were dropped, that aufs will be included in
the kernel until unionmount is available, however, you should clearly
communicate that to us as you know we hare heavily depending on it, and
not just wait until we find out), please state so *now*, so that we can
bring aufs oot modules back into the archive.

this is quite upsetting.

Regards,
Daniel

Bug#573334: linux-image-2.6.32-3-686: intermittent kernel soft lockups

2010-03-10 Thread topro
Package: linux-2.6
Version: 2.6.32-9
Severity: critical
Justification: breaks the whole system

Using this version of linux image (and previous versions of 2.6.32 from sid as
well) on lenny-i386 results in intermittent soft-lockups (see netconsole
capture below). It is not an hardware-issue as I can reproduce it on multiple
(identical) machines with identical hard-disk images.
It happens regularly in the range of some minutes to some hours after boot.
Sometimes it seems to coincidence when an usb storage device gets connected,
but it also happens purely randomly, from the user's point of view.
This bug seems to be only occuring on single core machines, I never saw it
happen on an intel core-duo (on intel 945 chipset) version of the (otherwise)
identical hardware running the identical hard-disk image.
The hardware in use is a Congatec XTX X855 Computer-On-Module with 1GHz Celeron
M373, intel 855 chipset, 256MB RAM (thats what the cgosdrv kernel module is
for) and a 4GB CF-Card attached to ATA as hard drive.

Could this be caused by the fact that the only self-built kernel module
'cgosdrv' being built in lenny using lenny compiler and userland while the
linux-image is taken binary from sid? At least its both gcc-4.3.x, thats what I

Sure. I limited it to CAP_SYS_ADMIN now, which usually means root.

The patch will be sent for merging, but I can't promise it will be merged
before the next merge window for 2.6.34, and only after that will it be

Bug#550562: Problem not fixed in linux-2.6 2.6.32-9 - system keeps freezing with OpenGL

2010-03-10 Thread Cedric

Hi

I'd like to inform that in my side, latest version of linux-2.6 didn't
solve the problem.

System keeps freezing randomly when I'm using openGL applications.

As far as I understood, you worked mainly on the kernel and the
firmware-linux paquets.

In my opinion, the problem is more xorg-core / xorg-common : indeed, on
my 3 debian laptops (IBM T42 - GP VGA compatible controller: ATI
Technologies Inc Radeon Mobility M7 LW [Radeon Mobility 7500]), the
problem started on 10th October 2009, as soon as the xorg paquets have
been upgraded to the version below:

xserver-common_2%3a1.6.4-2_all.deb
xserver-xorg-core_2%3a1.6.4-2_i386.deb

No problem before.

I'm using debian SID, squeeze and also an Ubuntu 9.10, on 3 different
PCs IBM Thinkpad T42 with exactly the same configurations == Same
freezes on each PC.

Thanks
Cédric

the Grub menu was not updated, i. e. `update-grub` was not run. I think I

Do you have an idea what could cause this?

Bug#572754: linux-image-2.6.33-2-amd64: Xorg / virtual console switching glitch with KMS on i915

seconds I see what was on the screen before I switched away from Xorg,
then the screen flashes and gets updated by Xorg. Usually when it gets
updated the screensaver has kicked in. I would expect that when
switching back to Xorg I'd see the screensaver instead of a flash of my
desktop. I also wonder if this could be a minor information disclosure
security issue. As you can see below, I have an i915-based Intel GPU,
which defaults to using KMS. I didn't have this issue before i915 was
switched to using KMS by default.

This happens to me too, on 2.6.32 and 2.6.33, with a Radeon X800GT and a
Radeon HD 4650 (both using KMS).

The code is compatible in that it provides identical functionality in
userland, but is not simply a copy of header files from the Linux kernel
into a userspace package. To be clear, there is no GPL kernel code in
libkcompat.

For your reference, the source code for libkcompat is found at:

However, the fact that it wasn't clear to you suggests that my package
description needs improvement. I will make sure this happens prior to

 Hi,

as we discussed last time, unionfs-fuse is not acceptable.

until unionmount is available in upstream, the debian kernels need to
 have aufs2.

either, the kernel team is going to keep applying the aufs2 patches for
the kernel =2.6.32, or, we need aufs oot modules back in the archive.

If your intention is to no longer include aufs2 within the debian kernel
images itself (which i'm quite surpised, because it was clearly said
when linux-modules-extra-2.6 were dropped, that aufs will be included in
the kernel until unionmount is available,

I don't believe anyone made such a promise. However, if you are going
to continue making interim snapshots of Debian Live and if aufs2 is
going to be updated to work with upstream kernel releases then we can
continue including it for a while. Please do whatever you can to aid in
development of union mounts as a replacement.

[...]
 this is quite upsetting.

Sorry about that.

Ben.

Bug#569704: potential fix

2010-03-10 Thread dann frazier
A coworker was seeing the same symptoms on a system from the
same-era loaned me the system to debug. The issue ended up being
due to a change in the SRAT table, and a backport of the following
fixed it for me.

I've committed it to the lenny branch - would you be able to test it?

commit 4c31e92b97b6d7e7b19ee5e54a22571ffdebb305

x86: check boundary in setup_node_bootmem()

Commit dc09855 (x86/uv: fix init of memory-less nodes) causes a
two sockets system (where node-1 doesn't have RAM installed) to crash.

That commit makes node_possible include cpu nodes that do not have memory.
So check boundary in setup_node_bootmem().

Hi,

/usr/src/linux-support-*/modules/rules.include uses a wrong sed
expression to detect binary NMUs:

dpkg-parsechangelog | sed -ne 's,^Version: .*\+b\(.*\)$$,\1,p'

This incorrectly triggers on versions like

1.2.3~beta1-1
1.2.3-4.0anbe2

because (in sed) \+ is a regexp commmand char, while + is a char literal.
Please change this to

sed -ne 's,^Version: .*+b\(.*\)$$,\1,p'

You may also consider restricting it to +b followed by a number:

sed -ne 's,^Version: .*+b\([0-9]\+\)$$,\1,p'

Thanks.

linux-base should not use LABEL=, in the case where blkid provide such
data[1]

In my /etc/fstab, linux-base has inserted:
 # /dev/sda6 /foobar vfat defaults 0 2
 LABEL=  /foobar vfat defaults 0   2

I haven't rebooted to try it, but it would be weird anyway.

On my system:
% blkid /dev/sda6
/dev/sda6: LABEL= UUID=68F6-270E TYPE=vfat

Kudos for linux-base

The conversion script decided to use LABEL=myhostname-swap for my swap
partition. Swap partitions support UUIDs too; please consider using
those instead.

Thanks,

Hi,

we have a host with an 07:00.0 RAID bus controller: Areca Technology Corp.
Device 1201
(aka 07:00.0 0104: 17d3:1201)

The kernel driver is arcmsr.

Could you please backport the necessary driver to lenny?

Indeed, it works just fine in lenny. I thought it didn't work for some
reason and was reluctant to go back to what I thought would be a
non-booting kernel. Closing this bug, and sorry about the noise.
