Bug#591073: linux-image-2.6.32-5-amd64: Suspend-to-RAM regression

2010-08-01 Thread Josef Spillner
outdated test against 2.6.32-18 from unstable,

Will do so in two days when that version enters testing. Is it possible
through bugs.d.o to get a notification when a package which fixes a bug becomes
available for a certain distribution or suite? This would be an awesome
feature.

Bug#591025: Remove the irrelevent BOOT in initramfs.conf - patch available

2010-08-01 Thread maximilian attems
On Fri, 30 Jul 2010, wol...@yahoo.com wrote:

The BOOT switch should not be set in the initramfs.conf.

why do you come to that conclusion?
it is used by live-initramfs afair.

It should be determined in boot time by the boot commandline, by
either explicitly a boot=foo or implicitly such as root=/root/nfs.

I suggest that the BOOT directive in initramfs.conf be deprecated.

you don't give any rationale, so will close unless this gets motivated
properly and it be clear why we want that and what gain that would be.

You added:

- Fixes CVE-2010-2226

- Fixes CVE-2010-2525

CVE-2010-2226 is apparently fixed by:

commit 1817176a86352f65210139d4c794ad2d19fc6b63
Author: Dan Rosenberg dan.j.rosenb...@gmail.com
Date: Thu Jun 24 12:07:47 2010 +1000

xfs: prevent swapext from operating on write-only files

which is certainly not in 2.6.32.17-rc1. Have you confused it with some
other CVE?

Ben.

Bug#591186: Acknowledgement (linux-image-2.6.32-5-686: Kernel panic with 2.6.32-5 and vlan tagging on interface without link ready

2010-08-01 Thread Matthias Wamser
Hi again,

in my first report i mentioned that the problem only occurs with
vlan on the e1000 driven interface not with the e1000e interfaces.

This is *not* true.

I thought i could workaround the problem for me, if i configure the both
e1000 interfaces without vlan tagging and just use the 3 e1000e
interfaces for vlan tagging.

But this results in the same kernel panic like before, see the trace at
the end. The full trace at the end shows the boot process with serial
console attached.

If i remove just the vlan tagging config the machine boots normally.

I wonder if this bug could be related to this one
i found in vlan package: 587666

All my testings where without network connectivity on the vlan
interface, so i tried some different settings and i think this clarifies
a lot:

If i wait until the Interface is up, i can setup vlan tagging.
If i do not wait or the interface is not up the kernel panics.

Please se below how i tested it. It's 100% reproducible.

So i think this is a release critical bug for this kernel version.

Regards,
matthias

Hi together,

sorry for my duplicate post but I was debugging the same time the bug
was closed :)

But i can confirm too it's resolved. I installed the version 2.6.32-18
from unstable, activated all my vlan config, plugged out the cables,
rebooted and it works.

Thank you for your work.

May lenny really become the best release ever .. ;)

Bug#550739: [PATCH] mac80211: Don't squash error codes in key setup functions

2010-08-01 Thread Ben Hutchings
ieee80211_add_key() currently returns -ENOMEM in case of any error,
including a missing crypto algorithm. Change ieee80211_key_alloc()
and ieee80211_aes_{key_setup_encrypt,cmac_key_setup}() to encode
errors with ERR_PTR() rather than returning NULL, and change
ieee80211_add_key() accordingly.

Compile-tested only.

errors with ERR_PTR() rather than returning NULL, and change
 ieee80211_add_key() accordingly.

 Compile-tested only.

Looks good to me.

Suspend to ram (closing laptop lid) works for a few times (maybe only once?)
 then starts failing legacy_suspend(): pnp_bus_suspend+0x0/0x57 returns 38

Please send the output of 'readlink /sys/devices/pnp0/00:07/driver'.

Bug#590935: NFS client cannot access a share when the TCP connection status is TIME_WAIT

After 5 minutes of inactivity of an nfs share, the status of the TCP
connection between the client port (779 in the transcript below) and
the NFS server port (2049) switches from ESTABLISHED to TIME_WAIT
which is totally normal. Then, according to the default timeout value
for the TIME_WAIT state, the connection remains in this state for one
minute (60 seconds, which is twice the value of the MSL). If during
this minute, another attempt to access the same NFS share is
performed, an Input/output error is generated. After a minute the
connection occurs normally with the same client port number (779 in
the transcript below). Below is a transcript:
 [...]
It should be noted that on other system/version (Last updates of
Redhat 5.5, Ubuntu 10.04, Debian Squeeze/Sid), the behavior is
slightly different: When the connection is reinstated during the
TIME_WAIT minute, another port number (the client port number minus
one) is used and the NFS share can be accessed without error.

I have identified the change in the kernel that fixes this bug.
However, I am not sure that I will be able to apply just that change to
the kernel version included in Debian 5.0 'lenny'.

It looks like the fix included in the 2.6.27 stable update series is
also applicable to lenny's kernel based on 2.6.26.

However, we will still have to assess whether this bug is serious enough
to merit a stable update, when balanced against the risk that the fix
will introduce a new bug.

Package: firmware-ralink
Version: 0.14+lenny2

I've got an 3Com 3CRPCIN175 installed but when calling iwconfig no
device is listed.

The following dmesg is logged:

[ 14.875549] ACPI: PCI Interrupt :02:0c.0[A] - GSI 20 (level,
low) - IRQ 20
[ 14.882920] phy0 - rt61pci_init_eeprom: Error - Invalid RF chipset
detected.
[ 14.882966] phy0 - rt2x00lib_probe_dev: Error - Failed to allocate
device.

[ 14.883024] ACPI: PCI interrupt for device :02:0c.0 disabled

lspci reports:
02:0c.0 Unclassified device [0080]: RaLink RT2600 802.11 MIMO

hence I suspect that the firmware-ralink should be the correct driver
for this device and it ought to work with the 3Com card.

I've also tested the latest testing build of firmware-ralink (version
0.18) which reports the same dmesg.

Since I also see an entry in iwconfig I suspect the issue has been
resolved with that kernel (build) (I'm not 100% sure because of the
warning in the dmesg output as well as the fact that the driver
seems not to be the rt61pci one as it is/was for all the older
  kernels)?

I.e. the driver itself is functional with current kernels?

Closing the bug, then.

 Additionally random screen flicker occurs.

While I was surfing the web with iceweasel the screen got a pinkish

Switching from or to console or restarting X didn't make it go away but

available for a certain distribution or suite? This would be an awesome
 feature.

unstable versions just install fine in testing, no point in
waiting for transition.

This driver adds support to control the backlight on a number of
Samsung laptops, like the N130, and control for some of the LEDs

This driver hasn't been merged into the standard kernel yet, which is a
prerequisite of a backport to the Squeeze kernel.

Package: linux-latest-2.6

Hi there!

This discussion started on the smartphones-kernel mailing list [1],
please keep at least that list cc:ed, TIA. If you do so, no need to cc:
me, I read the list.

NB, I decided to go with a wishlist bug instead of directly writing to
the d-kernel mailing list because at the end linux-latest-2.6 should be
changed. Thus, documenting this fact in a bug is IMHO more appropriate.

Basically, the Debian FreeSmartphone.Org Team [2] started to provide a
Linux kernel package for the Openmoko FreeRunner [3]. FYI, a lot of
specific patches haven't submmitted to the vanilla Linux kernel yet,
which means that until that happens the Debian FSO Team must provide is
own Linux kernel package.

However, since I don't want to duplicate the effort, my idea is to build
this Linux kernel package as similar to the normal Debian Linux kernel
packages as possible. Which means that there should be two dummy
packages, linux-image-$OPENMOKO and linux-image-2.6-$OPENMOKO.

For the other kernel flavors these packages are provided by
linux-latest-2.6: I'm not here to ask for these dummy packages right
now. On the contrary, since I'm going to add them to the
linux-2.6-openmoko source package [4], for $OPENMOKO I'd like to use a
name which *maybe* will be the same linux-latest-2.6 will provide in
future (thus avoiding hardcoded package dependencies).

I thought about the -s3c suffix, because both Openmoko models (GTA01,
Neo 1973 [5] and GTA02, Neo FreeRunner [6]) use a Samsung SoC from the
S3C family (2410 and 2442, respectively). Would this be a good option
in the long term?

Thx, bye,
Gismo / Luca

Hello there,
I'm running Lenny (testing) with linux-image-2.6-k7 installed (depending from
linux-image-2.6-686).
Using a prism2-USB WLAN adapter I need to use linux-wlan-ng. The kernel modules
for it are not shipped
with the linux-image so I need to compile and install it using module-assistant.

Updating linux-image unfortunately causes WLAN not to work any more until I
build new modules for the
updated kernel (I often forget to do so and wonder why Internet doesn't work).
But then: building modules
without linux-headers (and without access to the Internet to download them) is
a bit complicated.
Okay, I should have been updated linux-headers too.

I think updating the kernel automatically should update (in postinst)
user-specific modules (=build new ones)
not included in the linux-image.
Users who have compiled their own modules usually have m-a and the sources of
the corresponding modules
installed so:
m-a -l VERSION_OF_NEW_KERNEL a-i allu -t
builds exactly those modules which has been build for an older kernel version
and devices should seamlessly work
with the updated kernel.

This was not possible to do with module-assistant, because
module-assistant creates and installs new packages and the post-
installation script of one package cannot trigger the installation of
another. This is part of the reason why we previously used the
linux-modules-{extra,contrib,non-free}-2.6 packages to build binary
packages of out-of-tree modules.

DKMS does not create packages and so it does not have this problem. In
the above version we added support to the linux-headers-* packages for
hook scripts that will be run when these packages are installed or
updated. If the user installs linux-image-2.6-$flavour,
linux-headers-2.6-$flavour and a module source package that works with
DKMS, the module will be updated automatically.

Ben.

 As the guest inside Virtualbox,
'linux-image-2.6.32-trunk-686' hangs at boot with the
 following message:

 BUG: soft lockup - CPU#0 stuck for 61s! [modprobe:95]

The message is repeated about once per minute, apparently
 indefinitely.

The older kernel 'linux-image-2.6.30-686' does boot
 successfully.

Does this still occur with the current sid kernel in both
the host and the guest?

Cheers,
Moritz

Bug#568126: lm-sensors: Resource conflicts policy in kernel has changed

2010-08-01 Thread Moritz Muehlenhoff
On Fri, Feb 05, 2010 at 11:58:36AM -0500, Dave Witbrodt wrote:

This looks like a consequence of a recent change in kernel policy
regarding resource conflicts. According to the 'kernel-parameters.txt'
file in the kernel documentation, the default value of the parameter
 acpi_enforce_resources has changed:

 $ grep -A 15 acpi_enforce_resources Documentation/kernel-parameters.txt
   acpi_enforce_resources= [ACPI]
   { strict | lax | no }
Check for resource conflicts between native drivers
and ACPI OperationRegions (SystemIO and SystemMemory
only). IO ports and memory declared in ACPI might be
used by the ACPI subsystem in arbitrary AML code and
   can interfere with legacy drivers.
strict (default): access to resources claimed by ACPI
is denied; legacy drivers trying to access reserved
resources will fail to bind to device using them.
   lax: access to resources claimed by ACPI is allowed;
legacy drivers trying to access reserved resources
will bind successfully but a warning message is logged.
no: ACPI OperationRegions are not marked as reserved,
   no further checks are performed.

I recently resolved a very similar issue myself by adding
acpi_enforce_resources=lax to my kernel boot line in GRUB.

Didier, does this fix the issue for you?

Cheers,
Moritz

If udev-150 is to be installable, linux-image-2.6-xen-amd64 needs to be upgraded
as well, to something new-enough to work with udev-150.

Xen domU kernels as new as the 2.6.30.x series exist and are new enough to work
with udev-1.50; debian needs to make such a kernel image available.

The above version re-added the Xen featureset, including dom0 support.

Bug#591031: linux-image-2.6.35-rc6-686: suspend works for a while (once?) then stops working

I see that there is a fix for this in Linux 2.6.35, which I will upload

Uploading linux-2.6

2010-08-01 Thread Ben Hutchings
linux-2.6 version 2.6.32-18 should transition to testing in 2 days.
Following that, I intend to upload 2.6.32-19 incorporating stable
release 2.6.32.17 and DRM changes from stable release 2.6.33.7.

I also intend to upload 2.6.35 to experimental shortly.

Shout if there's anything I should wait for.

Ben.

Ok, further checking shows that lenny has XVR500 and XVR2500
enabled (doing a test install with a XVR-500 card right now)
  but testing doesn't.

Indeed, they seem to have gone missing somehow from
 debian/config/sparc/config where there's just:

 # CONFIG_FB_LEO is not set
 # CONFIG_FB_S1D13XXX is not set

whereas in the same source we have arch/sparc/configs/sparc64_defconfig
 where there's:

 # CONFIG_FB_LEO is not set
 CONFIG_FB_XVR500=y
 CONFIG_FB_XVR2500=y
 # CONFIG_FB_S1D13XXX is not set

I'm filing a bug report with this message, thanks for the exact hint.

As for the new driver that Dave mentioned as an attachment, it's
 already in mainline at:
 http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux-2.6.git;a=commitdiff;h=2d378b9179881b46a0faf11430efb421fe03ddd8
That should apply pretty easily to .32 stable.

I've added the patch and activated it in the Sparc config. Do you have the
hardware, can you test a build?

Cheers,

 Hello.

To reproduce the bug you will need some means for denying root access to
 (possibly unmounted) devtmpfs filesystem.
This is easily achievable with SELinux, for example.
Required: kernel_t should be denied access to the devtmpfs fs_con type.

 Debian's selinux-policy-default as of 2:0.2.20091117-2 version
provides default context for devtmpfs filesystem as
 system_u:object_r:tmpfs_t:s0
and contains no access rules for kernel_t to create special device nodes and
directories there, also kernel_t is not a permissive domain.

linux-image-2.6.32-3-686-bigmem as of 2.6.32-9 have devtmpfs enabled, but
userspace does not use it, so it does not get mounted and correctly labelled.
That would not be a problem if devtmpfs code would be bug-free, but it seems
that it is not prepared to see ENOPERM from vfs helpers, so that all manifests
as inability to boot with SELinux enabled and in enforced mode.

On first access to (unused and unbound) virtual console audit this (in
 permissive mode):
   type=AVC msg=audit(1272355156.238:105): avc:  denied  { search } for
 pid=1686 comm=getty name=/ dev=devtmpfs ino=4

or when booted into single user mode without getty and with sulogin on
 /dev/console (in permissive mode)

If booted in enforced mode, or just switched to enforced, any command, that
 access unused (unbound) VTs
hangs the console totally. No VT switching or scrolling is possible,
 ctrl-alt-del is not received,
however Sysrq-b reboots machine after a pause.

I believe, that nevertheless this denials may be fixed by writing an
 appropriate SELinux module,
by allowing the kernel_t access to invisible devtmpfs floating somewhere,
 still that is not
 a SELinux policy bug.

Googling the discussion of kernel maintainers with devtmpfs authors made me
 believe, that authors
intended devtmpfs for reduced userspace (embedded?) systems with no complex
 interoperability
 issues in mind.
Please do not turn CONFIG_DEVTMPFS=y in default debian kernels, that code is
 not appropriately
designed and tested for everyone's use, moreover it is not required for
 debian environment
to boot properly, debian have initramfs and udev.
At least until it is fixed to work in real world.

devtmpfs will remain for Squeeze, if you want to see this fixed in Squeeze, it
should be covered in refpolicy.

Cheers,
Moritz

I can't get much information from this log, but by inspecting the code I
do see some problems with the handling of errors during initialisation.

Could you please test whether the attached patch fixes this bug?
Instructions for rebuilding the Debian kernel package are available at
 http://kernel-handbook.alioth.debian.org/ch-common-tasks.html#s-common-official.

Sebastian,
did you test the patch?

Cheers,
Moritz
