Bug#591073: linux-image-2.6.32-5-amd64: Suspend-to-RAM regression
outdated test against 2.6.32-18 from unstable, Will do so in two days when that version enters testing. Bug#591025: Remove the irrelevent BOOT in initramfs.conf - patch available
On Fri, 30 Jul 2010, wol...@yahoo.com wrote: Package: initramfs-tools Version: 0.97.2 The BOOT switch should not be set in the initramfs.conf. why do you come to that conclusion? it is used by live-initramfs afair. It should be determined in boot time by the boot commandline, by either explicitly a boot=foo or implicitly such as root=/root/nfs. I suggest that the BOOT directive in initramfs.conf be deprecated. you don't give any rationale, so will close unless this gets motivated properly and it be clear why we want that and what gain that would be. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-kernel-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#591186: Acknowledgement (linux-image-2.6.32-5-686: Kernel panic with 2.6.32-5 and vlan tagging on interface without link ready
Hi again, in my first report i mentioned that the problem only occurs with vlan on the e1000 driven interface not with the e1000e interfaces. This is *not* true. I thought i could workaround the problem for me, if i configure the both e1000 interfaces without vlan tagging and just use the 3 e1000e interfaces for vlan tagging. But this results in the same kernel panic like before, see the trace at the end. The full trace at the end shows the boot process with serial console attached. If i remove just the vlan tagging config the machine boots normally. I wonder if this bug could be related to this one i found in vlan package: 587666 All my testings where without network connectivity on the vlan interface, so i tried some different settings and i think this clarifies a lot: If i wait until the Interface is up, i can setup vlan tagging. If i do not wait or the interface is not up the kernel panics. Please se below how i tested it. It's 100% reproducible. So i think this is a release critical bug for this kernel version. Bug#590935: NFS client cannot access a share when the TCP connection status is TIME_WAIT
On Sat, 2010-07-31 at 00:05 +0100, Ben Hutchings wrote: On Fri, 2010-07-30 at 11:58 +0200, WEBER, Jean Francois wrote: Package: nfs-common Version: 1:1.1.2-6lenny2 After 5 minutes of inactivity of an nfs share, the status of the TCP connection between the client port (779 in the transcript below) and the NFS server port (2049) switches from ESTABLISHED to TIME_WAIT which is totally normal. Then, according to the default timeout value for the TIME_WAIT state, the connection remains in this state for one minute (60 seconds, which is twice the value of the MSL). If during this minute, another attempt to access the same NFS share is performed, an Input/output error is generated. After a minute the connection occurs normally with the same client port number (779 in the transcript below). Below is a transcript: [...] It should be noted that on other system/version (Last updates of Redhat 5.5, Ubuntu 10.04, Debian Squeeze/Sid), the behavior is slightly different: When the connection is reinstated during the TIME_WAIT minute, another port number (the client port number minus one) is used and the NFS share can be accessed without error. I have identified the change in the kernel that fixes this bug. However, I am not sure that I will be able to apply just that change to the kernel version included in Debian 5.0 'lenny'. It looks like the fix included in the 2.6.27 stable update series is also applicable to lenny's kernel based on 2.6.26. However, we will still have to assess whether this bug is serious enough to merit a stable update, when balanced against the risk that the fix will introduce a new bug. This discussion started on the smartphones-kernel mailing list [1], please keep at least that list cc:ed, TIA. If you do so, no need to cc: me, I read the list. NB, I decided to go with a wishlist bug instead of directly writing to the d-kernel mailing list because at the end linux-latest-2.6 should be changed. Thus, documenting this fact in a bug is IMHO more appropriate. Basically, the Debian FreeSmartphone.Org Team [2] started to provide a Linux kernel package for the Openmoko FreeRunner [3]. FYI, a lot of specific patches haven't submmitted to the vanilla Linux kernel yet, which means that until that happens the Debian FSO Team must provide is own Linux kernel package. However, since I don't want to duplicate the effort, my idea is to build this Linux kernel package as similar to the normal Debian Linux kernel packages as possible. Which means that there should be two dummy packages, linux-image-$OPENMOKO and linux-image-2.6-$OPENMOKO. For the other kernel flavors these packages are provided by linux-latest-2.6: I'm not here to ask for these dummy packages right now. On the contrary, since I'm going to add them to the linux-2.6-openmoko source package [4], for $OPENMOKO I'd like to use a name which *maybe* will be the same linux-latest-2.6 will provide in future (thus avoiding hardcoded package dependencies). I thought about the -s3c suffix, because both Openmoko models (GTA01, Neo 1973 [5] and GTA02, Neo FreeRunner [6]) use a Samsung SoC from the S3C family (2410 and 2442, respectively). Would this be a good option in the long term? Using a prism2-USB WLAN adapter I need to use linux-wlan-ng. The kernel modules for it are not shipped with the linux-image so I need to compile and install it using module-assistant. Updating linux-image unfortunately causes WLAN not to work any more until I build new modules for the updated kernel (I often forget to do so and wonder why Internet doesn't work). But then: building modules without linux-headers (and without access to the Internet to download them) is a bit complicated. Okay, I should have been updated linux-headers too. I think updating the kernel automatically should update (in postinst) user-specific modules (=build new ones) not included in the linux-image. Users who have compiled their own modules usually have m-a and the sources of the corresponding modules installed so: m-a -l VERSION_OF_NEW_KERNEL a-i allu -t builds exactly those modules which has been build for an older kernel version and devices should seamlessly work with the updated kernel. Christian Meyer __ Hostage mit Bruce Willis kostenlos anschauen! Exklusiv für alle WEB.DE Nutzer. http://www.blockbuster.web.de ---End Message--- ---BeginMessage--- Version: 2.6.32-11 This was not possible to do with module-assistant, because module-assistant creates and installs new packages and the post- installation script of one package cannot trigger the installation of another. This is part of the reason why we previously used the linux-modules-{extra,contrib,non-free}-2.6 packages to build binary packages of out-of-tree modules. DKMS does not create packages and so it does not have this problem. In the above version we added support to the linux-headers-* packages for hook scripts that will be run when these packages are installed or updated. If the user installs linux-image-2.6-$flavour, linux-headers-2.6-$flavour and a module source package that works with DKMS, the module will be updated automatically. Bug#574243: please restore Sun XVR video drivers, and add the latest one [was Re: Debian Sparc 5.4 on Sun blade 2500]

Ok, further checking shows that lenny has XVR500 and XVR2500 enabled (doing a test install with a XVR-500 card right now) but testing doesn't. Indeed, they seem to have gone missing somehow from debian/config/sparc/config where there's just: # CONFIG_FB_LEO is not set # CONFIG_FB_S1D13XXX is not set whereas in the same source we have arch/sparc/configs/sparc64_defconfig where there's: # CONFIG_FB_LEO is not set CONFIG_FB_XVR500=y CONFIG_FB_XVR2500=y # CONFIG_FB_S1D13XXX is not set I'm filing a bug report with this message, thanks for the exact hint. As for the new driver that Dave mentioned as an attachment, it's already in mainline at: http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux-2.6.git;a=commitdiff;h=2d378b9179881b46a0faf11430efb421fe03ddd8 That should apply pretty easily to .32 stable. I've added the patch and activated it in the Sparc config. Do you have the hardware, can you test a build? The image with the sn9c102 module is really dark. Is not posible to enable the gspca_sonixb module because is disabled from kernel source as i can see in sonixb.c #if !defined CONFIG_USB_SN9C102 !defined CONFIG_USB_SN9C102_MODULE {USB_DEVICE(0x0c45, 0x602e), SB(OV7630, 102)}, #endif defaults were set in July 2008, please report upstream on bugzilla.kernel.org so that upstream hears about aboves situation. and let us know the bug report so that we can track it. thanks I am the gspca maintainer and I found this bug report in usenet. I will move the 0c45:602e webcam from sn9c102 to sonixb. This should go to the next Linux kernel (2.6.35). Bug#579746: linux-image-2.6.32-3-686-bigmem: Permission denials in devtmpfs handlers DO break the rest of the kernel.

To reproduce the bug you will need some means for denying root access to (possibly unmounted) devtmpfs filesystem. This is easily achievable with SELinux, for example. Required: kernel_t should be denied access to the devtmpfs fs_con type. Debian's selinux-policy-default as of 2:0.2.20091117-2 version provides default context for devtmpfs filesystem as system_u:object_r:tmpfs_t:s0 and contains no access rules for kernel_t to create special device nodes and directories there, also kernel_t is not a permissive domain. linux-image-2.6.32-3-686-bigmem as of 2.6.32-9 have devtmpfs enabled, but userspace does not use it, so it does not get mounted and correctly labelled. That would not be a problem if devtmpfs code would be bug-free, but it seems that it is not prepared to see ENOPERM from vfs helpers, so that all manifests as inability to boot with SELinux enabled and in enforced mode. On first access to (unused and unbound) virtual console audit this (in permissive mode): type=AVC msg=audit(1272355156.238:105): avc: denied { search } for pid=1686 comm=getty name=/ dev=devtmpfs ino=4 scontext=system_u:system_r:kernel_t:s0 tcontext=system_u:object_r:tmpfs_t:s0 tclass=dir type=AVC msg=audit(1272355156.238:105): avc: denied { write } for pid=1686 comm=getty name=/ dev=devtmpfs ino=4 scontext=system_u:system_r:kernel_t:s0 tcontext=system_u:object_r:tmpfs_t:s0 tclass=dir type=AVC msg=audit(1272355156.238:105): avc: denied { add_name } for pid=1686 comm=getty name=vcs4 scontext=system_u:system_r:kernel_t:s0 tcontext=system_u:object_r:tmpfs_t:s0 tclass=dir type=AVC msg=audit(1272355156.238:105): avc: denied { create } for pid=1686 comm=getty name=vcs4 scontext=system_u:system_r:kernel_t:s0 tcontext=system_u:object_r:tmpfs_t:s0 tclass=chr_file or when booted into single user mode without getty and with sulogin on /dev/console (in permissive mode) # echo /dev/tty2 type=AVC msg=audit(1272355319.117:102): avc: denied { search } for pid=1668 comm=getty name=/ dev=devtmpfs ino=4 scontext=system_u:system_r:kernel_t:s0 tcontext=system_u:object_r:tmpfs_t:s0 tclass=dir type=AVC msg=audit(1272355319.117:102): avc: denied { write } for pid=1668 comm=getty name=/ dev=devtmpfs ino=4 scontext=system_u:system_r:kernel_t:s0 tcontext=system_u:object_r:tmpfs_t:s0 tclass=dir type=AVC msg=audit(1272355319.117:102): avc: denied { add_name } for pid=1668 comm=getty name=vcs2 scontext=system_u:system_r:kernel_t:s0 tcontext=system_u:object_r:tmpfs_t:s0 tclass=dir type=AVC msg=audit(1272355319.117:102): avc: denied { create } for pid=1668 comm=getty name=vcs2 scontext=system_u:system_r:kernel_t:s0 tcontext=system_u:object_r:tmpfs_t:s0 tclass=chr_file If booted in enforced mode, or just switched to enforced, any command, that access unused (unbound) VTs hangs the console totally. No VT switching or scrolling is possible, ctrl-alt-del is not received, however Sysrq-b reboots machine after a pause. I believe, that nevertheless this denials may be fixed by writing an appropriate SELinux module, by allowing the kernel_t access to invisible devtmpfs floating somewhere, still that is not a SELinux policy bug. Googling the discussion of kernel maintainers with devtmpfs authors made me believe, that authors intended devtmpfs for reduced userspace (embedded?) systems with no complex interoperability issues in mind. Please do not turn CONFIG_DEVTMPFS=y in default debian kernels, that code is not appropriately designed and tested for everyone's use, moreover it is not required for debian environment to boot properly, debian have initramfs and udev. At least until it is fixed to work in real world. devtmpfs will remain for Squeeze, if you want to see this fixed in Squeeze, it should be covered in refpolicy.
