[PATCH] kbuild, deb-pkg: support overriding userland architecture

2010-11-06 Thread Asbjoern Sloth Toennesen
Usefull if building for sparc64 userland, because the
sparc and sparc64 userlands use the same 64-bit kernel,
making it impossible to always select the correct userland
architecture for the resulting debian package.

Might also be usefull, if you want a i386 userland with a amd64 kernel.

Example usage:
make DEBARCH=i386 deb-pkg

This patch is based on my 'kbuild, deb-pkg: select
userland architecture based on UTS_MACHINE' patch.

Instead of creating the debian package for the compiling userland,

Eg. with this patch the following make command:

  make ARCH=i386 deb-pkg

will output an i386 Debian package instead of an amd64 one,
when run on an amd64 machine.

How do I either select a differnet package-arch or reverse to the
 current way?

 I am right now using 'make ARCH=x86_64 deb-pkg' on a 32bit userspace
environment running with a 64bit kernel, wanting to create packages to
be installed in this i386 arch.

(As I want 64bit support where possible (mostly for AES-NI support in
dm-crypt), but don't have the time available to do a complete userspace
 reinstall and reconfiguration)

Sounds like an one off thing, so in your case forcing the installation
should work:

dpkg --force-architecture linux-image-*.deb

The problem with that approach is that it doesn't work with APT, but I
doubt that there are any private APT repositories with this environment.

The issue with one kernel and 2 userspaces will also arise in sparc,
when the sparc64 userland gets going. So it will need to be dealt with
at some point, so I create a 3 lines additional patch for it.

I experiences this problem with linux-image-2.6.32-5-686 (2.6.32-15) after
which I activated the workaround mentioned here
(pre-up ethtool -K eth0 rx off)

Since then (11th July 2010) I never had this problem again.

Today I removed above workaround to see if the problem is still reproducible

Bug#602642: nfs-kernel-server: Crossmnt stopped working after upgrade from Lenny to Squeeze

2010-11-06 Thread Daniel Lindgren
Package: nfs-kernel-server
Version: 1:1.1.2-6lenny2
Severity: important

Upgraded file server from Lenny to Squeeze. After upgrade NFS clients failed to
access bind mounted subdirectories on NFS server, error message about stale NFS
handle.

Basic setup on fileserver:

/dev/md0 is mounted at /mnt/md0 in fstab
/mnt/md0/raid is bind mounted at /data/raid in fstab

/etc/exports looks like this:
/data 192.168.0.0/255.255.255.0(ro,no_subtree_check,crossmnt)

NFS clients mount fileserver:/data.

This setup has been used for about a year. After fileserver was upgraded to
Squeeze the clients could mount fileserver:/data but not access the raid
subfolder, got an error message about stale NFS handle.

Downgrading nfs-kernel-server and nfs-common to Lenny versions
(1:1.1.2-6lenny2) restored functionality.

well PROC_EVENTS depends on connector built-in, needs investigation cost.
no modular improvement in linux-next. might need prodding.
