Bug#616639: context menu key does not work on Thinkpad X201 Tablet

2011-03-06 Thread Paul Wise
Package: linux-2.6
Version: 2.6.37-2
Severity: normal

The context menu key on my keyboard for my new Thinkpad X201 Tablet does
not work, according to evtest and xev it triggers the WakeUp keycode.
Below is an evtest log of me pressing the menu key 10 times and then
Ctrl+C to kill evtest. The data below is for Linux 2.6.38-rc6 from
experimental but it happens with 2.6.37 in unstable too.

Hi,

when running the 3.6.37-rc5 kernel, I noticed that my screen fails to
relight after being suspended by the desktop manager (inactivitiy timeout).
I can reliably reproduce this (and recover) by following these steps:

1) boot, up to a running X
2) $ xset dpms force off
3) move mouse

Now the screen is on, things work, but I cannot light the screen more than a
bare minimum (using the Fn-{up,down} hardware keys), while I can before step
2. I can recover from this situation by suspending-to-ram and waking up again.

This is also a regression from the Squeeze-Sid kernel (2.6.32-29), but I think
it worked with 2.6.36.

Cheers,

OdyX

  upgrading to DebPkg:linux-image-2.6.37-1-amd64 from
linux-image-2.6.32-5-amd64 gives an oops with `snd-hda-intel` and
audio does not work anymore, since no sound devices are shown. You can
see the trace in the below (pasted by your reportbug scripts) Linux
  kernel log.

Is the ALSA version in Debian Sid/unstable not compatible or is there
  another problem?

I'm not sure what you mean by 'the ALSA version'. ALSA is made up of
kernel drivers and libasound in user-space. The drivers are included in
the kernel package and cannot be incompatible with it. The interface
between the drivers and libasound is not supposed to change in an
incompatible way, and in any case a user process should not be able to
 crash the kernel.

Sorry for my ignorance and thank you for the clarification.

So I think this is just a bug in the driver. Please report it upstream
at https://bugzilla.kernel.org under product 'Drivers', component
'Sound(ALSA)'. Let us know the bug number or URL so we can track it.

Ticket #30552 [1] now tracks this issue in the Linux BTS.

Paul

That should be fine.  That gives us time to include longterm release
2.6.32.30 and pick up a few other bug fixes.

It would be nice if it can be done before since I'll do a surgery on
26th and need to travel for it on 24th or 25th.

it's unsuitable for an official kernel which has to support more than
just Radeon hardware!

This really sounds like LibreOffice (or more likely an extension to LO)
has grabbed and then not released the keyboard and mouse. Applications
can override normal window focus temporarily ('grab') for purposes like
drag-and-drop, but unfortunately this is not automatically released when
you release the mouse buttons. If an application fails to release its
grab it can effectively break the entire desktop session in the way you
described. However, the console switching keystrokes should still work.
Could you temporarily remove ibus and test that Strg-Alt-F1 works when
the system is in this state?

Ben.

I meant Strg-Alt-F1
and it did not respond.

The system does not respond at all:
even Strg-Alt-Backspace to Kill X
or Strg-Alt-F1 to F6 did do anything.
Everything is blocked.

I think the BUG is in KDM.

Could you temporarily remove ibus and test that Strg-Alt-F1 works when

 I meant Strg-Alt-F1
 and it did not respond.

The system does not respond at all:
 even Strg-Alt-Backspace to Kill X

Well, that key combination is now disabled by default.

or Strg-Alt-F1 to F6 did do anything.
 Everything is blocked.

OK, that does sound like something more serious than an unreleased grab.
But I cannot see what difference ibus could make.

I think the BUG is in KDM.

I don't think so. kdm gets out of the way once you have logged in.

Enter 'help' for a list of built-in commands.

/bin/sh: can't access tty; job control turned off
(initramfs)

Running 'vgchange -a y' at this point activates all volume groups and
exiting the initramfs shell causes the boot to proceed normally.

The problem can be solved by passing either 'scsi_mod.scan=sync' or
'rootdelay=20' on the command line. The rootdelay option handling is
slightly counterintuitive: in /scripts/init-top/udev we will sleep for
$ROOTDELAY seconds if it is set, however if rootdelay= is not
specified on the command line we will not sleep here, and boot will
fail. in /scripts/local ROOTDELAY is set to a default of 30 seconds if
rootdelay= is not set, but sleeping here does not help, as the LVM
devices will not magically appear without vgchange being called, and
that's not going to happen, because /scripts/local/top have been run
at this point already.

There are a few options of fixing it in the generic case:

1. Make scsi_mod.scan=sync the default. The implication of this are
unclear to me.
2. Try to activate the volume groups at the end of the
waiting-for-root time in /scripts/local.
3. Come up with some way of asynchronous notification of volume groups
being available for activation, and invoke vgchange on this
notification. I clearly don't know about how LVM works internally to
accomplish something like this, an udev hook, perhaps?

While the bug is fairly harmless and plenty of workarounds exist, I
consider fixing it desirable, as it would case a boot failure on some
systems immediately after installation, and figuring out what's going
on may be a bit of a challenge for the user.

Best regards,

Bug#616690: RFH: nfs-utils -- NFS support files common to client and server

2011-03-06 Thread Ben Hutchings

I request assistance with maintaining the nfs-utils package.

The package description is:
Use this package on any machine that uses NFS, either as client or

 and idmapd.

This is co-maintained by Anibal Monsalve Salazar and the kernel team
(mostly represented by me). Currently we are not keeping up with bug
reports and I don't think we have sufficiently broad experience with
NFS to deal effectively with them.

Running this kernel I can log into gnome fine, but running dselect gives:

updated and the previous index files will be used. GPG error:

Attempting to decompress good archive files results in crc errors less than
halfway through the set. Extracting the same archive in 2.6.32 works just
  fine.
(4.4GB zipped or rar'ed ISO files)

Also the adobe flash player crashes immediately, I can only send a bug
  report
to adobe by clicking in the window, adobe restarts after sending the report
  (no
idea what is in it, I get to see nothing) and crashes again immediately..
  As in
the above 2 problems it works fine in 2.6.32.

Eventually the machine grinds to a halt, X freezes, the hard disk reports
  that
it is trying to access beyond the end of the device or something and all I
can do is hit the reset buttone and go back the kernel 2.6.32.

I'll stop here before it crashes again...

Please remove fglrx and try again.

 Ben.

OK, at least the dselect segfault is gone, thank you. On the first
reboot after purging all fglrx packages and doing Xorg -console (using
the xorg radeon driver) it seemed to be better but then crashed nastily.
I now consistently can log into Gnome but only get to see the desktop,
no panels or menus, just before X starts I see a bunch of segfaults fly.
What the segfault is it doesn't say, just a screenful before switching
mode to the gdm3 launcher. Booting with 2.6.32 works fine still.

Bug#613973: linux-image-2.6.37-1-686: Disturbing [Hardware Error] MCE messages in 2.6.37

 Hi,

After upgrade to 2.6.37, I started having tons of errors like those shown
below, about MCE. This happens in all terminals, in a sid box that did not
show this problem until 2.6.37 is installed.
[...]

Please report this upstream at https://bugzilla.kernel.org under
product 'Platform Specific/Hardware', component 'i386'. Let us know the
bug URL or number so we can track it.

It may also be worth testing a release candidate of 2.6.38, as packaged
in experimental.

Bug#611832: linux-image-2.6.32-5-amd64: general protection fault at reboot under qemu: native_stop_other_cpus+0x86/0x90

yes - it smells like it tries to deliver vector 0, after the panic
code has deinitialized the lapic / ioapic

which suggests a qemu bug from
 http://linux.derkeiler.com/Mailing-Lists/Kernel/2008-09/msg09652.html

Shall I reassign the bug or do you know how to investigate this more?

Sorry, I don't have a good idea how to investigate this further. The
message you're referring to is quite old and I would expect the bug to
have been fixed in qemu since then. Is the KVM host using an old
version?

Ben.

 Hi,

The devices file in usbfs reports Spd=?? for USB SuperSpeed buses; this
was fixed in 2.6.37 with commit 834e2312e7a384877a876b0d34dffc3046c96bcb
by printing out the correct speed (5000).

The question marks actually break some badly-written software; the fix is
 available and straightforward.

We don't mount usbfs by default any more, which would make it really
broken!

The attached patch is ready to use with the current 2.6.32 kernel; the
original commit also added the correct speed for USB_SPEED_WIRELESS, I
removed it as it's not supported in 2.6.32.

This looks harmless though, so I'll apply it.

Ben.

i915 on a powerpc, eh? What was I thinking?

I've now talked briefly to the DRI and powerpc upstream maintainers, and
the answer is that radeon is mostly broken on at least 32-bit powerpc
while nouveau is in better shape but not quite stable yet. So I'm going
to revert most of the FB configuration changes I made in 2.6.37-1 for
the next upload to unstable.

Bug#617202: linux-image-2.6.37-2-amd64: *-wmi modules breaking rfkill switch and WiFi functionality

2011-03-06 Thread Ludovico Cavedon
Package: linux-2.6
Version: 2.6.37-2
Severity: important

Hi,
with the new kernel (2.6.37) my wireless connection stopped working. The
wlan0 device was present, but Network Manager was reporting wireless as
disabled.

Moreover the Wifi/Bluetppth on/off switch was having no effect at all
(the LED next to it would always stay in the ON color).

In order to fix it, I had to blacklist the hp-wmi modules, which
apparently was grabbing the resources for thr rfkill switch before the
wireless driver was able to do it.

Here is the dmesg when the hp-wmi was not blackisted:

It is a known issue upstream that on Intel GPUs when DPMS blanks the screen
the backlight stays turned off when the screen is turned back on.

Chris Wilson committed a patch for this to upstream here
https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=22672#c42

which can be downloaded here
https://bugzilla.kernel.org/attachment.cgi?id=43272

and I can confirm that this patch fixes the issue with 2.6.37.

Upstream it will be part of 2.6.38.
