I have had the same trouble with upgrading a Debian sid system. Indeed
modifying /etc/idmapd.conf and using /run/rpc_pipefs instead of
/var/lib/nfs/rpc_pipefs fixed my rpc.idmapd issues for me.
However, I think it would be good to be more transparent about this.
