Bug#878221: linux-image-4.9.0-4-amd64: Screen flickers randomly with Radeon R9 270X since upgrade from 4.9.0-3 to 4.9.0-4
The recent backport kernel does *not* have this issue. All is fine with 4.14.0-0.bpo.3-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 4.14.13-1~bpo9+1 (2018-01-14) This is on a Thinkpad X250 with 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation HD Graphics 5500 (rev 09) 4.9.0-4-amd64 and 4.9.0-5-amd64 on the same box do cause screen flickering. Chances are that the issue was introduced by the update to upstream 4.9.46. There are a handful of "drm/i915" changes: https://anonscm.debian.org/git/kernel/linux.git/commit/?h=debian/4.9.65-3%2bdeb9u2&id=17811b5a4b11b32307baca3b88067398a1168cfb "Workaround VLV/CHV DSI scanline counter hardware fail" sounds suspicious, but that's just a guess.
Bug#887389: Bug solved
On Buster (testing at the moment), with the last 4.14 linux kernel image, speedstep works again correctly :) We can say the bug is solved. Arnaud

There's an upstream change in cfg80211 that enables direct-loading of wireless rules, which requires public key crypto in the kernel. There doesn't appear to be any option to disable that mode, even though we don't need it because crda still works. Maybe you could disable wireless networking completely? Some options that could possibly be changed from y to m: - I2C, I2C_CHARDEV, I2C_MV64XXX. initramfs-tools should include I2C drivers to the initramfs if needed, but I'm not certain. - MTD, MTD_CMDLINE_PARTS, etc. But I'm pretty sure this will break some systems unless initramfs-tools is updated to include and load the cmdlinepart module. - RTC_DRV_MV (and disable RTC_HCTOSYS). There's a udev rule that should load the system clock from the first RTC if its driver is a module. - SPI_ORION. initramfs-tools should include this in the initramfs if needed, but I'm not certain. Some options that could possibly be disabled: - AUDIT. This is quite a niche feature. Also try comparing the complete configs over time and looking for symbols newly set to y. Bug#886746: Bug exists in vanilla kernel 4.9.65
I've compiled a vanilla kernel 4.9.65 (from git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/stable/linux-stable.git) and the bug is present. Vanilla kernel 4.9.30 works. I'll roll up my sleeves and start bisecting. -- John Hughes, CalvaEDI S.A.S. -- An Esker Company +33 1 4313 3131
Bug#888106: initramfs-tools: mkinitramfs should fail when ldd fails in copy_exec
Package: initramfs-tools Version: 0.130 Severity: minor Dear Maintainer, We're working on a minimalist build of a Debian derivative which doesn't include bash, and we ran into an situation in which due to a human error the system didn't have a working ldd. This wasn't detected during an image build process as mkinitramfs happily ignored ldd not working (while being present and being an executable), and proceeded creating a broken initramfs. In hook-functions, copy_exec does the following: # Copy the dependant libraries for x in $(ldd "${src}" 2>/dev/null | sed -e …) do done The return code of ldd is not handled at all. Should ldd fail for any reason, this failure will be ignored. I tried to write a patch, but I couldn't come up with an elegant solution which would cover cases other than just a wrong hashbang in ldd :) Maybe something like https://www.spinics.net/lists/dash/msg00165.html can be used, but it's up to you to introduce hacks like that into the code. Thanks in advance. -- Cheers, Andrew
