Source: linux
Version: 5.10.178-3
Severity: important
X-Debbugs-Cc: d...@debian.org, debian-m...@lists.debian.org, s...@debian.org

Following the point release, the buildd mipsel-osuosl-03.d.o does not
boot anymore, with errors in the AHCI controller:

[   35.912147] ata4.00: exception Emask 0x0 SAct 0x2000 SErr 0x0 action 0x6

[ 35.919769] ata4.00: failed command: WRITE FPDMA QUEUED

[   35.940097] ata4.00: status: { DRDY }
[   35.943743] ata4: hard resetting link

While that initially looks like a hardware issue, it appears that
reverting the kernel to 5.10.162-1 (from 5.10.178-3) fixes the issue.
Strangely mipsel.osuosl-05.d.o, which seems to be similar hardware (CPU,
motherboard and SATA drive), does not exhibit the same issue.

You'll find attached the output of /proc/cpuinfo, lspci and the full
boot log.

Downgrading to 20230404-1 fixed the problem.

Dear Maintainer,

It looks like CONFIG_HP_WMI was lost somewhere between 6.1 and 6.3 debian
kernels.

diff -Nua config-6.1.0-9-amd64 config-6.3.0-1-amd64 | grep WMI
 # CONFIG_DELL_WMI_PRIVACY is not set
 CONFIG_DELL_WMI_AIO=m
 CONFIG_DELL_WMI_DESCRIPTOR=m
+CONFIG_DELL_WMI_DDV=m
 CONFIG_DELL_WMI_LED=m
 CONFIG_DELL_WMI_SYSMAN=m
-CONFIG_HP_WMI=m

Most likely that happens because on kernel 6.3 HP_WMI is now under
if X86_PLATFORM_DRIVERS_HP

Thanks!

In https://bugs.debian.org/1022025#37 I saw another example of someone
who hadn't built a kernel before, found the proper instructions but
didn't succeed in building a (patched) kernel.

All it took to succeed was some light guidance. And I know that when I
was at that stage, I had similar problems.

This bug is intended to collect the experiences/problems/etc that
newbies run into, which in turn allows us/me to improve the
documentation for everyone.

I do intend to submit a MR to improve it, but first we need to collect
the issues newbies run into, which will be done in this bug.

Dear Maintainer,

   * What led up to the situation?

We run a priviledged eBPF based tool with a communication between kernel and
user space.
It runs without issues on kernels 4.15 to 5.18.
On kernels 5.19+, the whole system freezes after a few minutes.
It seems that with more system activities (load, forks) the freeze happens
earlier.
The underlying hardware seems to play no role, we could reproduce this on
different
bare metal systems as well as within a qemu based VM.

Since the running program is rather complex, it is not easily possible to carve
out a small reproducer.
We can provide gdb backtraces from freezes inside qemu.

Dear Maintainer,

After upgrading to bookworm, my bluetooth trackpad stopped working. It's
properly connected, and `libinput list-devices` displays this message:

It worked with earlier kernel versions. I went back to one I had at hand
from before the upgrade (6.1.0-0.deb11.5-amd64), and it worked again,
with `libinput list-devices` reporting:

Hi,

the jenkins job of my package mmdebstrap spawns ~260 qemu virtual
machines on amd64 to run the test cases in. For about a week now I'm
seeing random (about every ~300) hangs during boot. The effect can be
seen in these logs:

 - https://jenkins.debian.net/job/mmdebstrap-jenkins-worker/311/consoleText
 - https://jenkins.debian.net/job/mmdebstrap-jenkins-worker/313/consoleText
 - https://jenkins.debian.net/job/mmdebstrap-jenkins-worker/314/consoleText

Ctrl+F the logs for "qemu-system-x86_64: terminating on signal 15 from
pid XXX (timeout)".

On #debian-devel, f_g suggested that this is a fixed problem:

https://lore.kernel.org/stable/c4724b40-89f6-5aa7-720d-c4a4af57c...@amazon.com/#r
https://lore.kernel.org/all/5a56290d-806e-b9a5-f37c-f21958b5a...@grsecurity.net
https://lore.kernel.org/stable/20230615091830.rxmv2...@linutronix.de/

Is there a chance to see a stable update with
e9523a0d81899361214d118ad60ef76f0e92f71d applied?

Thanks!

cheers, josch

Hi,

CONFIG_VIRTIO_MEM=m is missing in debian 12, it was there in debian 11
and 10 and may be before.

It's still there unchanged in upstream kernel sources:

<https://elixir.bootlin.com/linux/v6.1/source/drivers/virtio/Kconfig#L1
18>

Browsing https://salsa.debian.org/kernel-team/linux.git I couldn't find
VIRTIO_MEM in master or bookworm but I might not be looking at the
right place.

Sincerely,

Laurent GUERBY

Hi,

following the advice on
https://kernel-handbook.alioth.debian.org/ch-common-tasks.html
under “Simple patching and building” I used debian/bin/test-patches to
apply some patches I need to test. Unfortunately, this produces only the
arch dependent file:
../linux-headers-4.12.0-trunk-amd64_4.12.2-1~exp1a~test_amd64.deb
../linux-image-4.12.0-trunk-amd64_4.12.2-1~exp1a~test_amd64.deb
../linux-image-4.12.0-trunk-amd64-dbg_4.12.2-1~exp1a~test_amd64.deb
and linux-headers-4.12.0-trunk-amd64 depends on
linux-headers-4.12.0-trunk-common (= 4.12.2-1~exp1a~test)
which does not exist. Since the package version was adjusted, I cannot
just use the version of the archive.

I believe debian/bin/test-patches should also build the arch independent
packages, to produce an actually installable set of .debs.

Thanks,
Joachim

Dear Maintainer,

*** Reporter, please consider answering these questions, where
appropriate ***

   * What led up to the situation?
using VLC + dvb (em28xx)

   * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or
 ineffective)?
Open VLC, first dvb channel play just fine, change to whichever other
 channel freezes VLC to the point to not be able to kill it. You
 can close it when opening it using a terminal. But still then the
 system will hang on shutdown twice. First with the sessions
 manager for 3 minutes, then with systemd- shutdown service
 endlessly. You need to hard resett.

   * What outcome did you expect instead?

Change Channel and play it.

Please note:
VLC+dvb work fine with Debian Kernel 6.1.0
VLC+dvb work fine with siduction-Debian Kernel up to 6.3.7
VLC+dvb do not work and freeze like above with Debian Kernel 6.3.0
VLC+dvb do not work and freeze like above with siduction-Debian Kernel
up to 6.3.7

For the record, although my observations do not suggest nvidia is
involved: All those Kernels, pure Debian or Siduction, showing or not
showing the above problem, need a patched nvidia driver for the kernel
module to build properly. Currently only siduction provides a patched
nvidia version which works fine on pure Debian kernels.

If there is anything I can help with solving the problem let me know.
Maybe some infor after I bring VLC to freeze? Let me know what to do to
provide helpfull information.

Thanks.

The file dg2_huc_gsc.bin is part of the source, but it is not shipped as part
of firmware-misc-nonfree. I cannot find any reason, why it is not packaged as
well. So I wonder if this was simply an oversight?

Package: src:linux
Version: 5.10.70-1
Severity: important

Dear Maintainer,

*** Reporter, please consider answering these questions, where appropriate ***

   * What led up to the situation?

Configuring this machine to mount nfs shares

   * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or
 ineffective)?

I set up the automounter with the standard mount options of our Arch
clients:

(auto.master)
/misc   /etc/auto.misc
-nfsvers=3,proto=udp,resvport,retrans=5,rsize=16384,wsize=16384,rw,hard

When the mount failed, I repeated it manually.

   * What was the outcome of this action?

The mount failed:

# mount -t nfs -vvv -o
nfsvers=3,proto=udp,retrans=5,rsize=16384,wsize=16384,rw,hard
:/u/pkgsrc /mnt
mount.nfs: timeout set for Tue Jul  4 18:23:55 2023
mount.nfs: trying text-based options
'nfsvers=3,proto=udp,retrans=5,rsize=16384,wsize=16384,hard,addr='
mount.nfs: prog 13, trying vers=3, prot=17
mount.nfs: trying 130.83.197.22 prog 13 vers 3 prot UDP port 2049
mount.nfs: prog 15, trying vers=3, prot=17
mount.nfs: trying 130.83.197.22 prog 15 vers 3 prot UDP port 701
mount.nfs: mount(2): Invalid argument
mount.nfs: an incorrect mount option was specified
#

   * What outcome did you expect instead?

A successful nfs share mount.

Instead, <https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1964093> pointed
me to

# grep "NFS.*UDP" /boot/config-5.10.0-9-amd64
CONFIG_NFS_DISABLE_UDP_SUPPORT=y
#

which disables UDP support for nfsv3 in the kernel.

This upstream decision
<https://www.spinics.net/lists/linux-nfs/msg74889.html> is more than
debatable -- we have been running nfsv3 over UDP for ~20 years here
without ever seeing the data corruption that was claimed as
motivation.

We run nfs through a router (several client subnets accessing servers
in an internal server subnet), and found nfs over udp a lot more
robust in the face or router reboots.

Comments/Problems:

Sadly, another failed attempt to install Debian on my brand-new Lenovo
IdeaPad 5, this time using a USB dongle equiped with the Realtek
RTL8188EUS chip set.

The installer failed to detect the network adapter and presented me
with a list of kernel modules, none of which got my device to work.
This is what dmesg reports after I plug the adapter into a USB port on
my current device, which is obviously not the same one as the report
applies to (which is why I removed all of the appended logs):

Version: 6.1.27-1
Severity: critical
Tags: upstream
Affects: ganeti
Justification: breaks unrelated software

Dear Kernel Maintainers,

A regression was introduced with upstream commit 58c5d0d6d5,
subsequently backported to 6.1 as 7e6631f7 and released with 6.1.26.
These commits break MAP_32BIT and affect applications relying on it. In
particular, we are seeing failures in ganeti's autopkgtests[1], where a
daemon written in Haskell (the GHC linker uses MAP_32BIT) segfaults with
a null pointer dereference. From the build artifacts:

 ganeti-luxid: mmap 4096 bytes at (nil): Cannot allocate memory
 ganeti-luxid: Try specifying an address with +RTS -xm -RTS

This has already been discussed on GHC's discourse[2] and has been fixed
upstream, with the fix queued for 6.1.30[3]. Please consider upgrading
to 6.1.30 or cherry-picking the fix for Bookworm.

Thanks,
Apollon

Dear Maintainer,

Please run this program 20 times:

#include
#include
#include

int main()
{
for (int i=0;i<1000;i++)
{
void* p = mmap(NULL, 65536, PROT_READ|PROT_WRITE,
MAP_PRIVATE|MAP_ANONYMOUS|MAP_32BIT, -1, 0);
if (p != MAP_FAILED) printf(".");
else if (errno == ENOMEM) printf("E");
else printf("(%d)", errno);
}
puts("");
}

Expected behavior:

It should print 1000 dots. If 1000 is increased to 10, it should print some
dots, then some Es. It should never print a dot after an E; if it's out of
address space, it shouldn't suddenly find new address space if the operation is
retried.

Actual behavior:

Kernel version 6.1.0-7-amd64:

On 13 of 20 runs, it prints 1000 dots. On some, it prints one to three randomly
scattered Es (never an E before at least 155 dots), and the rest is dots.

Kernel version 6.1.0-9-amd64:

On 8 of 20 runs, it prints 1000 dots. On some, it prints one to four randomly
scattered Es, first one after only 16 dots.

On some runs, there are long sequences of Es with a few dots interspersed;
worst case, only 383 of 1000 mmap()s succeed.

Additional information:

Running this on a few other computers, and asking some friends to run it,
returns

- Ubuntu 22.04 (kernel 5.19.0-43-generic): 1000 dots, every time.
- Debian 11 (kernel 5.10.0-21-amd64): 1000 dots, every time.
- Arch (kernel 6.3.3-arch1-1): Same pattern as 6.1.0-9-amd64.
- Arch (kernel 6.3.4-arch1-1): 1000 dots, every time.
- Fedora 38 (kernel 6.2.15-300.fc38.x86_64): Same pattern as 6.1.0-9-amd64.

so I suspect it depends, at least partially, on kernel configuration.

The more practical impact (and the context where I first encountered this bug)
is that the game Creeper World 3 frequently (~85% of the time) segfaults at
launch (after 437th line of strace output) under kernel 6.1.0-9-amd64, while it
reliably launches under 6.1.0-7-amd64.

(Unfortunately, the game is closed source and commercial, so I'm not sure if
you want a link in your bug tracker. The binary is freely available on the
developer's website; it asks for a license key, but the crashing part is far
before that.)

I'm happy to provide strace logs, kernel config, and whatever else; just tell
me what you need.

Hi,

CONFIG_VIRTIO_MEM=m is missing in debian 12, it was there in debian 11
and 10 and may be before.

It's still there unchanged in upstream kernel sources:

<https://elixir.bootlin.com/linux/v6.1/source/drivers/virtio/Kconfig#L1
18>

Browsing https://salsa.debian.org/kernel-team/linux.git I couldn't find
VIRTIO_MEM in master or bookworm but I might not be looking at the
right place.

Sincerely,

Laurent GUERBY

Hi,

the jenkins job of my package mmdebstrap spawns ~260 qemu virtual
machines on amd64 to run the test cases in. For about a week now I'm
seeing random (about every ~300) hangs during boot. The effect can be
seen in these logs:

 - https://jenkins.debian.net/job/mmdebstrap-jenkins-worker/311/consoleText
 - https://jenkins.debian.net/job/mmdebstrap-jenkins-worker/313/consoleText
 - https://jenkins.debian.net/job/mmdebstrap-jenkins-worker/314/consoleText

Ctrl+F the logs for "qemu-system-x86_64: terminating on signal 15 from

Hi,

following the advice on
https://kernel-handbook.alioth.debian.org/ch-common-tasks.html
under “Simple patching and building” I used debian/bin/test-patches to
apply some patches I need to test. Unfortunately, this produces only the
arch dependent file:
../linux-headers-4.12.0-trunk-amd64_4.12.2-1~exp1a~test_amd64.deb
../linux-image-4.12.0-trunk-amd64_4.12.2-1~exp1a~test_amd64.deb
../linux-image-4.12.0-trunk-amd64-dbg_4.12.2-1~exp1a~test_amd64.deb
and linux-headers-4.12.0-trunk-amd64 depends on
linux-headers-4.12.0-trunk-common (= 4.12.2-1~exp1a~test)
which does not exist. Since the package version was adjusted, I cannot
just use the version of the archive.

I believe debian/bin/test-patches should also build the arch independent
packages, to produce an actually installable set of .debs.

Thanks,
Joachim

This is not a bug. If you don't want this to happen, don't install
raspi-firmware.
