We run a priviledged eBPF based tool with a communication between kernel and user space. It runs without issues on kernels 4.15 to 5.18. On kernels 5.19+, the whole system freezes after a few minutes. It seems that with more system activities (load, forks) the freeze happens earlier. The underlying hardware seems to play no role, we could reproduce this on different bare metal systems as well as within a qemu based VM. Since the running program is rather complex, it is not easily possible to carve out a small reproducer. We can provide gdb backtraces from freezes inside qemu. -- System Information: Debian Release: 12.0 APT prefers testing-security APT policy: (500, 'testing-security'), (500, 'testing-debug'), (500, 'unstable'), (500, 'testing'), (1, 'experimental') Architecture: amd64 (x86_64) Kernel: Linux 6.1.0-7-amd64 (SMP w/20 CPU threads; PREEMPT) Locale: LANG=en_US.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=en_US.UTF-8 (charmap=locale: Cannot set LC_ALL to default locale: No such file or directory UTF-8), LANGUAGE=en_US:en Shell: /bin/sh linked to /usr/bin/dash Init: systemd (via /run/systemd/system) LSM: AppArmor: enabled Versions of packages linux-image-amd64 depends on: ii linux-image-6.1.0-7-amd64 6.1.20-1 linux-image-amd64 recommends no packages. linux-image-amd64 suggests no packages. -- debconf information: perl: warning: Setting locale failed. perl: warning: Please check that your locale settings: LANGUAGE = "en_US:en", LC_ALL = (unset), LC_TIME = "en_DE.UTF-8", LC_MONETARY = "en_DE.UTF-8", LC_COLLATE = "en_DE.UTF-8", LANG = "en_US.UTF-8" are supported and installed on your system. perl: warning: Falling back to a fallback locale ("en_US.UTF-8"). locale: Cannot set LC_ALL to default locale: No such file or directory (gdb) thread apply all bt full Thread 8 (Thread 1.8 (CPU#7 [running])): #0 arch_atomic_read (v=0x837c2b4c ) at arch/x86/include/asm/atomic.h:29 No locals. #1 atomic_read (v=0x837c2b4c ) at include/linux/atomic/atomic-instrumented.h:28 No locals. #2 pv_hybrid_queued_unfair_trylock (lock=0x837c2b4c ) at kernel/locking/qspinlock_paravirt.h:88 val = #3 __pv_queued_spin_lock_slowpath (lock=0x837c2b4c , val=) at kernel/locking/qspinlock.c:446 prev = next = node = 0x88813bdf1b40 old = tail = 2097152 idx = 0 queue = cnt = __PTR = VAL = _val = __PTR = VAL = __vpp_verify = _val = __PTR = VAL = __vpp_verify = pao_ID__ = pao_tmp__ = pto_val__ = pto_tmp__ = pao_ID__ = pao_tmp__ = pto_val__ = pto_tmp__ = pao_ID__ = pao_tmp__ = pto_val__ = pto_tmp__ = #4 0x81a2b6f0 in pv_queued_spin_lock_slowpath (val=7, lock=0x837c2b4c ) at arch/x86/include/asm/paravirt.h:591 __esi = __edx = __edi = __ecx = __eax = #5 queued_spin_lock_slowpath (val=7, lock=0x837c2b4c ) at arch/x86/include/asm/qspinlock.h:51 No locals. #6 queued_spin_lock (lock=0x837c2b4c ) at include/asm-generic/qspinlock.h:114 val = 7 val = #7 do_raw_spin_lock (lock=0x837c2b4c ) at include/linux/spinlock.h:186 No locals. #8 __raw_spin_lock (lock=0x837c2b4c ) at include/linux/spinlock_api_smp.h:134 No locals. #9 _raw_spin_lock (lock=lock@entry=0x837c2b4c ) at kernel/locking/spinlock.c:154 No locals. #10 0x812e1ba7 in spin_lock (lock=0x837c2b4c ) at include/linux/spinlock.h:350 No locals. #11 alloc_vmap_area (size=size@entry=20480, align=align@entry=16384, vstart=vstart@entry=18446683600570023936, vend=vend@entry=18446718784942112767,

Unfortunately, this produces only the arch dependent file: ../linux-headers-4.12.0-trunk-amd64_4.12.2-1~exp1a~test_amd64.deb ../linux-image-4.12.0-trunk-amd64_4.12.2-1~exp1a~test_amd64.deb ../linux-image-4.12.0-trunk-amd64-dbg_4.12.2-1~exp1a~test_amd64.deb and linux-headers-4.12.0-trunk-amd64 depends on linux-headers-4.12.0-trunk-common (= 4.12.2-1~exp1a~test) which does not exist. Since the package version was adjusted, I cannot just use the version of the archive. I believe debian/bin/test-patches should also build the arch independent packages, to produce an actually installable set of .debs. Currently only siduction provides a patched nvidia version which works fine on pure Debian kernels. If there is anything I can help with solving the problem let me know. Configuring this machine to mount nfs shares * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or ineffective)? I set up the automounter with the standard mount options of our Arch clients: (auto.master) /misc /etc/auto.misc -nfsvers=3,proto=udp,resvport,retrans=5,rsize=16384,wsize=16384,rw,hard When the mount failed, I repeated it manually. * What was the outcome of this action? The mount failed: # mount -t nfs -vvv -o nfsvers=3,proto=udp,retrans=5,rsize=16384,wsize=16384,rw,hard :/u/pkgsrc /mnt mount.nfs: timeout set for Tue Jul 4 18:23:55 2023 mount.nfs: trying text-based options 'nfsvers=3,proto=udp,retrans=5,rsize=16384,wsize=16384,hard,addr=' mount.nfs: prog 13, trying vers=3, prot=17 mount.nfs: trying 130.83.197.22 prog 13 vers 3 prot UDP port 2049 mount.nfs: prog 15, trying vers=3, prot=17 mount.nfs: trying 130.83.197.22 prog 15 vers 3 prot UDP port 701 mount.nfs: mount(2): Invalid argument mount.nfs: an incorrect mount option was specified # * What outcome did you expect instead? A successful nfs share mount. Instead, <https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1964093> pointed me to # grep "NFS.*UDP" /boot/config-5.10.0-9-amd64 CONFIG_NFS_DISABLE_UDP_SUPPORT=y # which disables UDP support for nfsv3 in the kernel. This upstream decision <https://www.spinics.net/lists/linux-nfs/msg74889.html> is more than debatable -- we have been running nfsv3 over UDP for ~20 years here without ever seeing the data corruption that was claimed as motivation. We run nfs through a router (several client subnets accessing servers in an internal server subnet), and found nfs over udp a lot more robust in the face or router reboots. *** End of the template - remove these template lines *** -- Package-specific info: ** Version: Linux version 5.10.0-9-amd64 (debian-kernel@lists.debian.org) (gcc-10 (Debian 10.2.1-6) 10.2.1 20210110, GNU ld (GNU Binutils for Debian) 2.35.2) #1 SMP Debian 5.10.70-1 (2021-09-30) ** Command line: root=UUID=67153f14-9542-47ac-9643-c3be9ed3e33c ro initrd=/install/initrd.gz quiet ** Not tainted ** Kernel log: [9.405659] systemd[1]: Queued start job for default target Graphical Interface. All it took to succeed was some light guidance. And I know that when I was at that stage, I had similar problems. This bug is intended to collect the experiences/problems/etc that newbies run into, which in turn allows us/me to improve the documentation for everyone. These commits break MAP_32BIT and affect applications relying on it. In particular, we are seeing failures in ganeti's autopkgtests[1], where a daemon written in Haskell (the GHC linker uses MAP_32BIT) segfaults with a null pointer dereference. From the build artifacts: ganeti-luxid: mmap 4096 bytes at (nil): Cannot allocate memory ganeti-luxid: Try specifying an address with +RTS -xm -RTS This has already been discussed on GHC's discourse[2] and has been fixed upstream, with the fix queued for 6.1.30[3]. If 1000 is increased to 10, it should print some dots, then some Es. It should never print a dot after an E; if it's out of address space, it shouldn't suddenly find new address space if the operation is retried. Actual behavior: Kernel version 6.1.0-7-amd64: On 13 of 20 runs, it prints 1000 dots. On some, it prints one to three randomly scattered Es (never an E before at least 155 dots), and the rest is dots. Kernel version 6.1.0-9-amd64: On 8 of 20 runs, it prints 1000 dots. On some, it prints one to four randomly scattered Es, first one after only 16 dots. On some runs, there are long sequences of Es with a few dots interspersed; worst case, only 383 of 1000 mmap()s succeed. Additional information: Running this on a few other computers, and asking some friends to run it, returns - Ubuntu 22.04 (kernel 5.19.0-43-generic): 1000 dots, every time. - Debian 11 (kernel 5.10.0-21-amd64): 1000 dots, every time. - Arch (kernel 6.3.3-arch1-1): Same pattern as 6.1.0-9-amd64. - Arch (kernel 6.3.4-arch1-1): 1000 dots, every time. - Fedora 38 (kernel 6.2.15-300.fc38.x86_64): Same pattern as 6.1.0-9-amd64. so I suspect it depends, at least partially, on kernel configuration. The more practical impact (and the context where I first encountered this bug) is that the game Creeper World 3 frequently (~85% of the time) segfaults at launch (after 437th line of strace output) under kernel 6.1.0-9-amd64, while it reliably launches under 6.1.0-7-amd64. (Unfortunately, the game is closed source and commercial, so I'm not sure if you want a link in your bug tracker. The binary is freely available on the developer's website; it asks for a license key, but the crashing part is far before that.) I'm happy to provide strace logs, kernel config, and whatever else; just tell me what you need. -- Package-specific info: ** Version: Linux version 6.1.0-9-amd64 (debian-kernel@lists.debian.org) (gcc-12 (Debian 12.2.0-14) 12.2.0, GNU ld (GNU Binutils for Debian) 2.40) #1 SMP PREEMPT_DYNAMIC Debian 6.1.27-1 (2023-05-08) ** Command line: BOOT_IMAGE=/boot/vmlinuz-6.1.0-9-amd64 root=UUID=3f03a19e-1f7e-43c8-a4e9-6297f87ce127 ro quiet ** Not tainted ** Kernel log: [2.147324] input: HDA Intel PCH Front Headphone as /devices/pci:00/:00:1f.3/sound/card0/input14 [2.147886] input: HDA Intel PCH HDMI/DP,pcm=3 as /devices/pci:00/:00:1f.3/sound/card0/input15 [2.148024] input: HDA Intel PCH HDMI/DP,pcm=7 as /devices/pci:00/:00:1f.3/sound/card0/input16 [2.148081] input: HDA Intel PCH HDMI/DP,pcm=8 as /devices/pci:00/:00:1f.3/sound/card0/input17 [2.148161] input: HDA Intel PCH HDMI/DP,pcm=9 as /devices/pci:00/:00:1f.3/sound/card0/input18 [2.160594] Bluetooth: Core ver 2.22 [2.160606] NET: Registered PF_BLUETOOTH protocol family [2.160606] Bluetooth: HCI device and connection manager initialized [2.160609] Bluetooth: HCI socket layer initialized [2.160610] Bluetooth: L2CAP socket layer initialized [2.160614] Bluetooth: SCO socket layer initialized [2.168164] usbcore: registered new interface driver btusb [2.168428] Bluetooth: hci0: HCI Enhanced Setup Synchronous Connection command is advertised, but not supported.
